2 Mendeleev s Table (1871) While it was the first periodic table, Mendeleev had very different elements, such as the very reactive potassium and the very stable copper, in the same family. Forty years later Moseley rearranged the elements by their atomic number which gave the table better periodicity.

Some can be found in pure form in nature (Cu, Ag, Au) Ions are colored, so compounds with transition elements in them are often colored. Many form multiple charges, need the Stock system to name those that do

12 Boron Family, 3-A Boron, Aluminum, Gallium, Indium and Thallium.

13 Carbon Family, 4-A Contain a wide variety of elements from 1 nonmetal (C), 2 metalloids (Si & Ga) IA and 2 metals (Pb & Sn).

14 Nitrogen Family, 5-A Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Astatine, Antimony & Bismuth.

15 Oxygen Family, 6-A Oxygen, Sulfur, Selenium, Tellurium & Polonium

16 Halogen, 7-A Extremely reactive and corrosive, only found in compounds Can be extracted from compounds using electricity Reacts violently with metals to form halide compounds (like NaCl)

17 Noble Gases, 8-A Completely nonreactive, never found in compounds Xe and Kr can be forced to react with F2 in the lab They have a stable octet, so they don t need to bond

18 d-block: Transition Metals Elements in the d-block are called transition metals. They have typical metallic properties such as conduction of electricity and high luster. Less reactive than group 1 and 2 elements. Some (i.e. platinum & gold) are so unreactive they usually don t form compounds.

19 f-block: Lanthanides & Actinides Elements in the period 6 of the f-block are called lanthanides (or rare-earth). Lanthanides are shiny metals similar in reactivity to alkaline earth metals. Elements in period 7 of the f-block are called actinides. Actinides are all radioactive, and many of them are known only as man-made elements.

22 Periodic Trend As you go from left to right, the number of protons increase. As you go from left to right, the number of electrons in the same energy level increase. As you go from top to bottom, electrons are farther away. As you go from top to bottom, more shells are added.

The number protons and radius are inversely proportional. As protons increase, the radius decreases. The number of energy levels and radius are proportional. As energy levels increase, the radius also increases.

27 Atomic Radii Sample Problem Of the elements Mg, Cl, Na, and P, which has the largest atomic radius? Explain. Solution: Na has the largest radius. All of the elements are in the 3 rd period, and atomic radii decrease across a period.

28 Ionization Energy the energy required to remove the most loosely held valence electron from the atom to form a positive ion when the atom is in the gas phase L to R, more protons stronger pulling tighter the atom more energy needed to remove an electron I.E increases T to B, more electron shells electron shielding farther electrons feel less attraction less energy to remove an electron I.E decreases

29 Ionization Energy (continued) Ionization energy tends to decrease down each group because electrons farther from the nucleus are removed more easily.

30 Ionization Energy Sample Problem Consider two elements, A and B. A has an IE of 419 kj/mol. B has an IE of 1000 kj/mol. Which element is more likely to be in the s block? Which will be in the p block? Which is more likely to form a positive ion? Solution: Element A is most likely to be in the s-block since IE increases across the periods. Element B would most likely lie at the end of a period in the p block. Element A is more likely to form a positive ion since it has a much lower IE than B.

31 Electron Affinity and Electronegativity Electron affinity is the energy change that occurs when an electron is acquired by a neutral atom. Electronegativity is a measure of the ability of an atom in a chemical compound to attract electrons from another atom in the compound. Electronegativity applies to atoms in a compound, while electron affinity is a property of isolated atoms.

32 Electronegativity The ability of an atom to attract valence electrons to itself. L to R, more protons more pulling from nucleus easier to attract another electron increase in electronegativity T to B, more electron shells farther away less effective pulling decrease in electronegativity.

33 Electronegativity Sample Problem Of the elements Ga, Br, and Ca, which has the highest electronegativity? Explain. Solution: All of these elements are in the fourth period. Br has the highest atomic number and is farthest to the right in the period. Br would have the highest electronegativity since electronegativity increases across a period.

36 Ionic Radii Cation- Positively charged ions formed when an atom of a metal loses one or more electrons Anion - Negatively charged ions formed when nonmetallic atoms gain one or more electrons Smaller than the corresponding atom Larger than the corresponding atom

37 Metallic Character the degree to which an element matches the characteristics of metals Metals lose electrons and form + ions, therefore elements that have low electronegativity and lose electrons easily have high metallic character.

38 Nonmetallic Character: the degree to which an element matches the characteristics of nonmetals. Nonmetals gain electrons and form - ions, therefore elements which have high electronegativity and gain electrons easily have high nonmetallic character.

43 Chemical Compounds An atom consist of a positively charged nucleus (protons and neutrons) and orbiting electrons. Valence electrons are electrons in the outmost shell (energy level).!!!! 47 Cations Positive ions retain the name of the element. If the atom is capable of forming more than one possible ion (like Fe can form charges of +2 or +3...) then a Roman numeral is placed after the ion name, signifying the charge.

48 Anion Negative ions are named after the element, with the second syllable replaced with the suffix -ide.

49 Polyatomic Ions Polyatomic (many atom) ions are covalent molecules with a charge. They behave as if they were a one-atom ion Example: Nitrate NO 3 - Phosphate PO 4 3- Note: ammonium is the only polyatomic ion with a + charge.
