ACTIVITY 1 Name Elemental and Their Properties (Chapter 1 - Activty 2) Identifiying elements and ther properties Students determine some of the physical and chemical properties of elements and learn how to use this information to organize elements into families.. ACTIVITY 2 Name Atoms and Their Masses (Chapter 1 - Activty 3) What are atoms adn how do they interact with each other. Students learn why atoms combine in certain proportions by transferring or sharing electrons from one atom to another. Students also learn the difference between an ionic and covalent bond. ACTIVITY 3 Name How Atoms Interact with Each Other (Chapter 1 - Activity 8) Showing the relationship between valence electrons and how the elements combine. Students learn why atoms combine in certain proportions by transferring or sharing electrons from one atom to another. Students also learn the difference between an ionic and covalent bond.

ACTIVITY 4 Name What Determines and Limits and Atom s Mass? (Chapter 1 - Activity 9) What determines atomic mass and nuclear stability (half-life, decay and fission / fusion) Students learn how to determine the atomic mass of an element and how the atom the average atomic mass is determined from the common isotopes of an element. The activity also leads them through the factors that determien nuclear stability and how fission and fusion differ. ACTIVITY 5 Name States of Matter: Solid, Liquid and Gas (Chapter 2 - Activity 2) Devolop the understanding of different physical states This activity helps the students develop an understanding of molecular motion in the different physical states: solid, liquid and gas. ACTIVITY 6 Name Solutions, Suspensions, and Colloids (Chapter 2 - Activity 3) Differentiate between solution, suspensions and colloids Students will test solutions, suspensions, and colloids for the Tyndall Effect and see if they can be separated by simple filtration.

ACTIVITY 7 Name Mass and Volume (Chapter 2 - Activity 5) Find density using direct and indirect measurements The students will determine the density of liquids and solids. The solids will be irregularly shaped so the water displacement techniques need to be used to determine the densities ACTIVITY 8 Name Paints (Chapter 3 - Activity 6) Test various combinations of soluble compounds to determine which will produce precipitates. Students will test 56 different double displacement reactions of soluble ionic compounds to determine if a insoluble precipiate is formed. ACTIVITY 9 Name Alternative Pathways (Chapter 4 - Activity 1) Compare and evaluate various methods to achieving a goal. Determine how energy and disorder change during physical and chemical processes. Student groups are assigned one method of CO2 production and given a goal to reach within 15 minutes.

ACTIVITY 10 Name Chemical Dominoes (Chapter 4 - Activity 4) Use both chemical and mechanical changes to create a sequence of events that produces a desired outcome. Students will work in teams to create a chemical dominoes toy that will use a sequence of chemical and mechanical changes to light an LED bulb. Each group will create and test a prototype, explain the chemistry behind each step and provide a written explanation of their design. ACTIVITY 11 Name Cartesian Divers (Chapter 5 - Activity 3) Investigate the relationship between the volume and pressure of gases at constant temperature. Quantify changes in volume or pressure with changes in the other. Interpret data concerning gas, volume and pressure. Students will observe the effect of pressure on the volume of a gas by using a gas-pressure probe and consider the application to everyday objects. ACTIVITY 12 Name Hot-Air Balloons (Chapter 5 - Activity 4) Investigate the relationsip between temperature and volume of a gase and apply Charles Law to launch a hot-air balloon. Students will perform an experiment to demonstrate the effects of temperature on a gas volume (under constant pressure). Calculations will be made to determine Charles Law. Secondly, the students will design and test a hot-air balloon using the knowledge that they gained during the first procedure.

ACTIVITY 13 Name The Ideal Gas Law (Chapter 5 - Activity 6) Determine the volume of one mole of a gas, calculate the gas-law constant, R and determine the Ideal Gas Law equation. Students will carry out a reaction to create a calculable amount of gas. Students will combine their knowledge fo the relationships of pressure, temperature and volume to determine the ideal Gas Law equation and accurately predict changes in gaseous systems. ACTIVITY 14 Name Chemical and Physical Changes (Chapter 6 - Activity 1) Students will experience a wide variety of chemical and physical changes and learn to differentiate between the two. Students will work in their lab groups to carry out and observe 15 different changes in matter. During each change, observations and evidence to identify the changes will be gathered. Students will also design an investigation that will test the combinations of different materials. ACTIVITY 15 Name Reaction Rates (Chapter 6 - Activity 6) Discover conditions that make a reaction proceed faster or slower Students will observe reactions occur with and without catalysts and make conclusions about conditions that change the rate of reactions. Students will also discuss explanations and form hypotheses as to why this happens at the molecular level.

ACTIVITY 16 Name Colorful Chemistry (Chapter 6 - Activity 7) Identify characteristic properties of acids and bases and learn tell the difference between them. Students will receive a variety of solutions and will make observations and conclusions based on how the solutions react to different additions. Through the activity, the students will become familiar with determining the ph of solutions using indicators, categorizing solutions based on the ph scale and using the mathematical defination of ph.
