1 Cherokee High School Class Syllabus Teacher: Lynne Styke Course Title: AP Chemistry Course Description This AP Chemistry course is designed to be the equivalent of the general chemistry course usually taken during the first year of college. This course is structured around six big ideas: 1) Structure of matter 2) Properties of matter-characteristics, states, and forces of attraction 3) Chemical reactions 4) Rates of chemical reactions 5)Thermodynamics 6) Equilibrium. A special emphasis will be placed on the seven science practices, which capture important aspects of the work that scientists engage in, with learning objectives that combine content with inquiry and reasoning skills. Instruction is rigorous and designed to prepare students for both the college experience and to take the AP Chemistry exam at the end of the second semester. College credit is awarded based on the AP exam and at the discretion of the college which the student attends. High school credit may be earned without the AP exam being taken and/or passed. There is a charge for the AP exam. Materials Needed for Class: Required: Notebook, paper, pencil There is also a $10 Lab Fee for this class

2 Week: 1 Chapter 1 Outline of Course Week:2 Chapter 2 and Physical Properties determine the type of matter, distinguish between physical and chemical properties, solve problems using dimensional analysis and determine significant figures. Topics Covered: Scientific method, classification of matter, physical & chemical properties, temperature, density, elements, dimensional analysis with unit conversions, significant figures Standards Covered: Elements are fundamental building materials of matter determine the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in an isotope and explain Rutherford s experiment Topics Covered: Atomic structure, isotopes, Rutherford experiment, cathode ray experiments Lab: Chemical & Physical properties and changes Week:3-4 Chapter 3 reactions and reaction stoichiometry solve stoichiometric problems, limiting reactant problems and be able to balance and equation and tell the reaction type. Topics Covered: Moles, stoichiometry, limiting reagents, balancing equations, types of chemical reactions Lab: Stoichiometry Week:5-6 Chapter 4 Standards Covered: Reactions in aqueous solution write net ionic equations and determine whether or not a precipitate will occur. They will also identify acids, bases and redox equations. Topics Covered: Net ionic equations, precipitation reactions, acids, bases and neutralization, redox reactions, solution concentration and stoichiometry Lab: Redox titration

3 Week:7-8 Chapter 5 Standards Covered: Thermochemistry determine the heat lost or gained in a chemical reaction. Topics Covered: Energy, thermodynamic laws, enthalpy, calorimetry, Hess s Law, enthalpy of formation Lab: Fundamentals of Calorimetry Week:9 Chapter 6 Standards Covered: Electronic structure of atoms compare/contrast the Bohr and quantum models of the atom and use the quantum model to locate electrons in an atom. Topics Covered: Wave properties, photons, Bohr model, Quantum mechanics, atomic orbitals, electron configurations Lab: Molecular spectroscopy Week Chapter 7 Standards Covered: Periodic properties of elements use the periodic table to determine trends and classifications of elements. Topics Covered: Periodic Table, effective nuclear charge, periodic trends, classifications of elements Lab: Spectrophotometric analysis Week 12 Chapter 8 Bonding draw Lewis structures. They will also be able to determine the type of bond between two atoms. Topics Covered: Lewis structures, Ionic bonding, covalent bonding, polarity, resonance structures Lab: Types of chemical bonds Week 13 Chapter 9 Standards Covered: Molecular Geometry determine the shape of a molecule using the VSEPR theory. Topics Covered: Molecular shapes and polarity, VSEPR theory, hybrid orbitals, multiple bonds Week 14 Chapter 10 Standards Covered: Gases determine which gas law to use to solve a problem and then solve the problem to reach a solution. Topics Covered: Properties of gases, pressure, gas laws, kinetic theory

4 Week 15 Chapter 11 Standards Covered: Liquids compare/contrast intermolecular forces, explain the properties of liquids and interpret a phase diagram. Topics Covered: Intermolecular forces, properties of liquids, phase changes, phase diagrams, vapor pressure Lab: Chromotography Week 16 Chapter 12 Standards Covered: Solids classify a solid and compare/contrast the different types of solids. Topics Covered: Classifications of solids, structures of solids, metallic solids, ionic solids, polymers, nanomaterials Lab: Gravimetric analysis of a carbonate Week Chapter 13 Standards Covered: Solutions discuss how solutions are formed, solve problems dealing with concentration and compare/contrast the different types of solutions. Topics Covered: Factors affecting solubility, solution concentration, colligative properties, colloids Week Chapter 15 equilibrium Objectivies: Students will be able to solve problems using Le Chatelier s Principle in order to determine when the reaction has reached equilibrium. Topics Covered: Equilibrium, equilibrium constant, heterogeneous equilibria, Le Chatelier s Principle Lab: Equilibrium Week Chapter 14 Kinetics determine the rate law of a reaction and use it to solve for rate. They will also be able to identify the rate determining step. Topics Covered: Factors affecting reaction rates, rate laws, reaction mechanisms, catalysis Lab: Reaction Rates Week Chapters Standards Covered: Acid Base Equilibria compare/contrast acids & bases, determine solution ph & solve equilibrium and buffers problems. Topics Covered: Definition of acid & base, ph scale, strong & weak acids & bases, K a, K b, common ion effect, buffers, titrations, precipitations Labs: Concentration of acetic acid in vinegar, buffers

5 Week 27 Chapter 19 Standards Covered: Entropy and Free Energy solve problems dealing with entropy and free energy in order to determine whether or not a reaction is spontaneous. Topics Covered: Spontaneous reactions, thermodynamic laws, entropy, Gibbs Free energy Week 28 Chapter 20 Standards Covered: Electrochemistry Objectives: Students will balance equations using the half-reaction method and explain the differences in different electrochemical cells. Topics Covered: Redox reactions, voltaic cells, cell potentials, batteries Week 29 Chapter 21 Standards Covered: Nuclear Chemistry determine half-life, radioactive decay products and compare/contrast fission and fusion. Topics Covered: Radioactivity, nuclear stability, transmutations, radioactive decay, fission, fusion Week 30 Chapter 24 Standards Covered: Organic and Biological chemistry name, describe and determine reactions involving organic compounds. Topics Covered: Hydrocarbons, organic functional groups, biochemistry Week All Chapters Standards Covered: All Standards Objectives: students will be successful on the AP exam. Topics Covered: All topics Review of AP Exam by doing practice tests and study packets
