1 Rockhampton Orchid Society Inc. P. O. Box 594 Red Hill Rockhampton, 4701 Founded 1955 Editor s notes Newsletter April 2018 Well, already many annual milestones have been ticked off everyone s list including Easter. For us, as members of the ROSI we can say goodbye to the tri-annual club visit, and our Autumn Show. The tri- annual visit was arguably the best visit so far with society members from Gladstone, Boyne /Tannum, Bundaberg and Hervey Bay joining us for the weekend. Many of our visitors enjoyed the weekend s change in format, visiting our members at the Capricorn Coast on the Saturday afternoon and Rockhampton members collections on Sunday. Congratulations to all winners and exhibitors at the Autumn Show, using the old adage of just being in the race is as good as winning is very apt, because as usual it was a hard job for the judges with so many fine entries. Judges came from Gladstone, Boyne Tannum, Bundaberg, Maryborough and Hervey Bay along with our local judges for this show which was really encouraging collegiality for our Rocky Judges as judging can sometimes be a thankless task. Our new one size table display format was very successful and although a little down on numbers of exhibits and visitors in comparison to previous Autumn Shows; however, needless to say, it was another well received show in all respects. Our shows have become an event over the years for the Rockhampton public and the Queensland orchid scene in general. We can be proud that we are one of the few remaining societies that still hold two shows a year. Show results and photos from the show are included in this Newsletter. The committee has started preliminary planning for the STOC conference and the first flyer has been made thanks to Sandra Radcliffe, a copy of which has been included in case you missed them at the Show. Unbelievably, for those of you who are numerically minded the conference is less that 500 days away. Our first ad as such has appeared in the Orchids Australia April edition in the form of an attachment to the article I wrote on Cooktown orchids which was in last month s Newsletter. It is envisaged that the flyers will be available for distribution at the forthcoming AOC conference in July in Sydney. In addition, in this newsletter I have also included our first Rockhampton Area Culture Guide and Species of the month feature. Until next month, good growing, Jeff Glover 1

In this sort of weather if you have an open roof greenhouse (shade-cloth) your plants are more at the mercy of the elements. Hence, you have to wait until the rain stops to apply fungicides and bactericides because obviously they will be washed off by more rain. On the positive side an open/shadecloth roof allows more air-movement which is a must in in these conditions. However, if you have an enclosed roof such as, polyschrim or fiberglass sheeting you can control your watering. Watering should be monitored on a needs day to day basis as over watering is one sure way to encourage fungal/rot problems. Going several days without watering in rainy /overcast weather is not going to hurt your orchids, even for Paphs and Phallies which require a high level of moisture, as in a greenhouse with a roof it is often 70% or more humidity inside while it is 100% as in raining outside. Good culture will often out-way the need for chemicals. Remain vigilante and get to know your greenhouse s microclimates. A sealed roof is not for everyone but if you want to grow a wider range of genera, it is certainly something to consider. It also allows other possibilities such as installing fans and with that you can control the air-movement as well. So, if you control the watering and the air-movement you can also control the use/need for chemicals. 2

Next committee meeting will be held at the Jenkinson residence on 3 rd April commencing at 7.00pm Jeff Bloxsom Trish Craig President Secretary Judging News Our ROSI based Judges have started on the 2018 Show Circuit, it is a requirement of all judges to maintain a level of competency by continuous judging, to gain as much experience at shows other than those of their own society and for Associates Judges and students to progress to full judge accreditation. Judges, Faye English, Bernie Hilse, Jeff Glover and Associates Nat Lakey, Peter Jenkinson, Trish Craig and Sandra Rowcliffe judged at the Gladstone Orchid and Foliage Society Easter Show, where they also participated in the award judging of the Champion of the Show. The successful plant belonged to wellknown judge and previous Assistant Registrar for the northern STOC panel and Gladstone Orchid and Foliage Society member Frank Mollenhauer. It was a seedling that Frank had bred and registered with the Royal Horticultural Society s registration of orchids as Vancostylis Princess Blue. He gave it the cultivar name of Helens Delight ; it received a HCC (Highly Commended Certificate) receiving 76.3 points. This is equivalent to a bronze medal in other systems of award such as the Taiwan Orchid Growers Association. Likewise, in the Australian Orchid Council s and most other judging system, 75 points is the first level of quality award attainment. Members of our ROSI judging team will this year travel to Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Childers, Gympie and various other shows throughout the forthcoming year including the Australian Orchid Council Tri- Annual Orchid Conference in June at Sydney. Judge Faye English and Associate Judge Peter Jenkinson both also recently judged at the Childers Orchid Society Show. It is quite a commitment for judges, associates and students when you think all out of pocket costs such as, accommodation and transport are at their own expense. Congratulations to all involved. 4

7 R.O.S.I Growers Group Report On Saturday 24 th March, 37 people from the Club enjoyed the very brisk Yeppoon weather at the Handley Residence - 16 Flinders Close, Lammermoor. I explained how I intended to undertake the role of Coordinator of the group and paid tribute to previous New Growers Leaders Keith Marsden and David Eggleshaw. I discussed the species Brassavola nodosa and listed and showed some of the nodosa crosses that members might find at the Vendors Stalls or in the Members Plant Sale area at the coming April Show. Members were informed that a compilation of information about making a Show Table Display was underway. This is aimed at helping first time participants in this section. Trevor then shared how we grow Phalaenopsis and demonstrated repotting a plant. The raffle followed with a great selection of donated prizes. Thanks to the Members who brought along plants for the raffle. Trevor used the computer drawing method which was successful and sped up the drawing. Our next afternoon will be held at Jenny and Peter Moore s Residence at 5 Graigilee Street, The Range on April 28 at 2pm. Jeff Bloxsom has agreed to be our Guest Speaker on the subject of growing Vandas. Jeff will also give Jenny some pointers on how he would deal with some of her problem Vandas. On that day, both Jenny and I intend having our computers set up to demonstrate OrchidWiz so that any members who don t own OrchidWiz can see what it is about. Such members could also bring along names of a couple of unflowered orchids from their collection to check what the flowers might look like and learn about their plant s ancestry. Margaret Handley Species of the Month As I had no request, for the inaugural Species of the Month, I have chosen Dendrochilum latifolium var micranthum. It has the largest flowers of the diverse Genus Dendrochilum. It is a species that grows well in tropical and subtropical areas of Australia, especially here in Central Queensland, as it is endemic to The Philippines. It will readily grow into a large specimen if potted on as each pot is outgrown. Like most Dendrochilums it resents dividing and divisions take a long time to re-establish, if at all. If left to proliferate it will form a self basket type of growth. It has small roots and the adage of the smaller the roots the smaller the potting mix is apt for this species. Successful media include perlite, peat, and small bark mixtures. It enjoys high humidity and can tolerate daily watering in our hot summers. Fertilizer should be a growth formula in Summer and flowering formula in Autumn / Winter (flowering period) with a rest during the height of winter. It is mainly specific pest free, but will develop fungus infections on the leaves, particularly Anthracnose and Sooty Mould on the undersides. Regular monthly sprays of Mancozeb will control this problem but in my experience trimming the leaves from infection does not affect flowering and will suffice in lieu of chemicals. In general, a very showy, easy to grow and rewarding species and one for the specimen grower. 7
