New Growers (Bus Trip ) From all reports the bus trip to the Tweed Show was very enjoyable despite the damp conditions. Everyone seemed to find something to interest them, even if it was cows rather than orchids! Our thanks to the Tweed Society for organising such a great visit. Bernie was particularly impressed with the vandaceous section of the show. Our thanks go to Di for organising this trip. Mud Map to Hopgoods The May meeting will be held at the home of John and Beverly Hopgood. At this meeting John Hopgood will speak about cultivation of Vandas. Please bring a chair and a hat and money to buy some of Wal Corney s orchids. Address is on front page.

New Growers (Beginners Day) Our first Beginners Day held at Trost s Orchid Nursery and Strawberry Farm was deemed a success by those who attended. Bernie, our head counter, said about 50 attended, 35 of whom attended the two potting demonstrations. Some came from as far afield as Glasshouse and Caloundra. Our thanks are due to Barry and Maureen, the organisers, Maureen and Val, the caterers, and of course to Robert who talked non-stop for the 4 hours giving us all the benefit of his 40 years or so of orchid growing. What a magnificent collection of orchids he has, some of which date back to his father and even his grandfather! Robert said he would be happy to repeat the experience after our October show. Most of those who attended came away with some purchases including Merv, who can never resist something special. Robert showing visitors around his personal collection and Merv with his purchases. Help Again Di still a few seats left for the NEW Growers Trip to the Gympie Golden Orchid Spectacular. Amazing value at only $10 per member. Don t miss out!!! More details from Di on Date is Sat 8th June. Longman Award Big News! our own Margaret Neldner is a finalist for this years Longman Award to recognise the achievements and outstanding contributions of members of the Longman community. All members are invited to attend the presentation ceremony on 17th May at 5.45pm at Caboolture Memorial Hall King St Caboolture. Please advise Lynn if you intend to attend. RSVP by 11th May.

News /Notices Sad News One of our members John Cockinos passed away during the month. John was already quite ill when he joined our society so he was unable to attend many meetings but was always a cheerful and interested presence. He is survived by his wife Rhonda who is the President of the Bribie Chamber of Commerce. We have some new members to announce this month. Please make welcome: Peter and Val Buckley from Narangba and Brian Cox and Frances Cool from Ningi. May all your orchids prosper and flower at the right time for our shows. Would you believe our hardworking secretary Lynn turns 70 this month? Congratulations and best wishes Lynn. Our stand at the Caloundra Show which was judged 4th overall. This is a Show and Tell from Bernie of a cattleya of unknown name or heritage which bloomed the day after our Easter Show. I guess we ve all had that happen.

News/Notices Subscriptions A reminder that these are now due. Still only $15. Please pay Treasurer Bernie asap. Following article was sent to Bev Hopgood by one of Wal Corney s children for inclusion in our Bulletin Attention Bulbophyllum growers. The specimen below of rothschildianum was recently awarded an ACM (Award of Cultural Merit). Plant is owned by John Green.

International News Anyone for a visit to Sarawak (Borneo)? Kuching, which is the capital, means CAT in Malay and there is a cat museum there! Its sister state Sabah attracts most visitors with orchid interest but Sarawak is at least as interesting (in my opinion).

Notes of Ken Unsworth s Talk in April Leaf Drop in Hard Cane Dendrobiums By Ken Unsworth Antheracnose - Glomerella Colletotrichum. The following information comes from what I have gleaned from other experienced growers, the DPI and my own observations, trial and errors. This problem seems to occur mostly in the phalananthae type of hard cane Dal s Dream, Dal s Classic etc etc. Intermediates and natives don t seem to be troubled as much. The problems most dendrobium growers experience occur during winter. Once the night time temperature starts to drop [generally around mid-april] you can expect to see leaf antheracnose start to rear its ugly head. By mid-september it has gone again. So what can we do to minimize this very vexing problem? While there are quite a few fungicides on the market to combat this fungal disease, I really do think that good hygiene and plant management is the way to go. However if you do decide to embark on a fungicide program you must start by going around your orchid house and cut off and remove all affected leaves and remove all fallen leaves from around your pots and under your benches. This alone is probably the best and cheapest form of attach. All fungal diseases thrive in a damp airless environment so maximize air flow in and around your dendrobiums either by hanging them up or if benched increase the space between them. From April to October keep floors dry and decrease your watering, only water when necessary, in the morning on bright sunny days. As mentioned before antheracnose is at its worst during winter. I find a monthly application of Seasol very beneficial. It seems to reduce leaf drop and helps ward off the effects of cold winters nights. Harden up your den s by using a low nitrogen fertilizer from February to September. Too much nitrogen makes plants too lush and more susceptible to fungal attach. A twice yearly application of dolomite doesn t go astray and would appear to stabilize the PH in your potting media. Some growers benefit from using a pool sanitizer [e.g. Alginox]on their orchid house floor. This kills any algae and a multitude of fungal nasty s that may be lurking under your benches. Keep on top of weeds in pots and on the floor.i m not saying weeds can cause fungal problems but healthy well grown plants can repel fungal attach a lot better. So what fungicides are available to combat this problem?? Quite a few years ago I submitted some affected leaves to the DPI at Cleveland. They cultured the spores and confirmed the problem was antheracnose / Glomerella. They suggested using Octave at 1gr/lt plus Mancozeb at 2gr/lt. These two fungicides are compatible and belong to a different active group Octave is group C and Mancozeb is group Y. Another fungicide that can be used is Carbendazim. Others include Amistar Cabrio and Flint; however the latter three are very expensive. There has been some success using Ec- Oil or an equivalent. Firstly clean up your plants and orchid house then spray with one of the above mentioned fungicides. Follow this up with an application of oil at about every 3-4 weeks interval. The fungicide will kill the internal spores and the oil will stop any new infections. Be careful of the temperature for the first 1-2 days after using oils. As the leaves are coated with oil, they find it hard to breathe and can cook if the temperature gets over 30c. Some of the oils that are recommended are Sacoa Biopest Parrafin Oil, Synertrol Horti Oil and Fuchs Spray Oil. Others that already have Mancozeb in them are Dithane OC and Penncozeb 420 SC. Another problem that orchid flowers suffer from is Botryitis or flower spotting. This can easily be prevented by spraying with Rovril. It is available in either liquid or powder. I prefer to use the liquid as it doesn t leave any residual stain on your flowers. The powder form is ok, it s just a matter of preference. The guys at Farm Craft should be able to point you in the right direction. Of course with the use of any insecticide or fungicide exercise extreme care and use the appropriate safety gear. When using any fungicide read the directions first. Especially the headings Resistance Warnings and Resistance Management Strategy s All fungicides come under a different active group listing. E g Mancozeb group Y, Octave group C, Carbendazim group A etc etc. If any group of fungicides are repeatedly used then the fungicide will become less effective. There are always small populations of spores that exist within any fungal group that may be resistant to a particular group of fungicide. So if you repeatedly use the same fungicide more than twice in a row this small population of rouge/ resilient fungal spores will end up dominating the easier to kill spores and you will end up with a fungal strain that you can no longer properly control. So make sure that you alternate and never use one particular fungicide, or fungicides in the same group more than twice in a row. In conclusion Prevention is better than cure, and a lot cheaper. Keep in mind that a well grown healthy plant will ward off insect and fungal attach far better than a half-baked sickly poor grown plant!!!
