It is the day, over 200 years ago, when our country was born. Every country has its own flag. When the United States became an independent country, it needed a flag. A group of men made a design for the flag. It is believed that they asked a lady named Betsy Ross to make the flag. Betsy Ross was 25 years old. She was very good at sewing. She liked to make flags. The flag had 13 red and white stripes. It had 13 white stars on a blue background. That is because there were just 13 states in the United States at that time. Today, the U.S. flag has 50 stars because there are now 50 states. Draw lines to connect each word to its meaning. celebrate independent group design stripe U.S. free; be your own boss many; more than one United States to make special; have a party a long, narrow band; a strip a drawing; outline; sketch Color the flag (7 red stripes and 6 white stripes; blue background). 24
