27 CALENDAR HISTORY As far back as 25,000 years ago, people had ways to keep track of the passage of time. The first calendars were marks on bones. They showed how the phases of the moon, from new moon to new moon, divided a year into 12 time periods. This is where the word month comes from. This kind of calendar was known as the lunar calendar. Later, a calendar was made based on the movement of the earth to the sun. It was called the solar calendar. Neither of these calendars measured the exact time of a year, which is 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds. A more accurate calendar, called the Julian calendar, was designed over 2,000 years ago and was used for many years. It, too, was not entirely correct. Today, we use the Gregorian calendar which most accurately shows the exact measurement of a year s time. When was the Gregorian calendar first used? Follow the instructions below to find the answer. On the calendar, circle: the last date of the third month the middle of the eleventh month the date when summer begins Christmas Day the last day of the fourth month Halloween the first date of fall the end of the second week of May New Year s Day the fifth day of the second month Add the circled numbers.
