3 Astract Divine Service: A Lutheran Mass is a sevenmovement ork lasting aout tentyive minutes The movements corresond to sections o the Roman Catholic Eucharistic liturgy, using English translations rom Lutheran Service ook These movements make u the traditional Lutheran order o service rom hich the title o the ork is taken: 1 Lord, Have Mercy (Kyrie) 2 Glory to God in the Highest (Gloria) What Shall I Render (Oertory) Holy, Holy, Holy (Sanctus) 5 Lam o God (Agnus Dei) 6 Thank the Lord (Canticle) 7 enediction (Concluding Rite/lessing) The goal o this iece as to create a musically sustantial setting o the liturgy that ould e ithin the technical gras o most college choirs and advanced church choirs The ork is scored or T chorus, chamer orchestra (strings, rass quintet, to ercussionists) and organ The organ is an integral art o the iece it must e included in the orchestra, ut contains many cued sections hich can e omitted or layed as desired, ased on the strength o the ensemle or maximum lexiility, the entire ork can also e erormed ith only organ and chorus (ith organ laying all cued sections) unctionality is also a large actor in the orchestration the string arts oten reinorce the organ, and are mostly conservative in range and diiculty The rass quintet (a standard church ensemle) is utilized more heavily in the aster movements (to, our, and six), and the ercussion is limited to timani (), crotales, susended cymal, crash cymals, and tamourine iii

5 To amiguities in the overall key scheme are notale: the second movement s oening and closing clearly utilize a tonal center o C maor, making a sort o ookend or the ork, ith the minormaor ordering o the irst to movements reversing itsel in the inal to Hoever, considering the main ody o the second movement is in Elat, it is also ossile to hear the overall root motion o the irst three movements as orming a C minor triad, hich is the home key o the iece Similarly, the rincial key area o Holy, Holy, Holy is D maor, ut the movement ends in Alat maor ater a sudden modulation y a tritone Since the olloing movement, Lam o God, is centered on minor, the relationshi eteen these movements can e heard either as a doule chromatic mediant (D maor to minor) or a more common diatonic mediant (Alat maor to minor) v
