2 NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR One o the things we arrangers like to do sometimes is take an old song and dress it iew clothes My own oint o view is to leave the melody more or less as the original comoser wrote it, and to e judicious with any harmonic changes I make to the song But when it comes to rhythm, there s where we can cut loose a it I enjoy seeing how a song works in a dierent time signature and/or a dierent groove than the original On this chart, I tried to turn the carol we all know into a gentle jazz waltz You should kee that in mind as you lay it kee the eel light and uoyant When the tromones state the melody at measure 11, kee the dynamic sot, and listen closely or intonation and lend Although the ensemle gets strong or a rie moment at 61, the next melodic statement y the saxes and muted trumet at 62 goes ack down to the soter dynamic It isn t until 78 that you can start uilding, culminating at 102 where the and should e lowing ull-out I you are soloing on this chart, you re going to love lowing on these chord changes Lots o juicy ii-v-i rogressions going on or you to dig in to O course, the etter you caegotiate those chords, the more un it is, so I d recommend taking the music home and lay through these chords, slowly at irst, and get them under your elt Imrovising on a song like this isn t like laying the lues where you can ound out the same scale or the entire solo There s a little more music to dig out here, ut your eorts will e rewarded, I romise, not only with a etter solo, ut also with a etter understanding o music like this in general I suggest that the ackground arts like saxes in 129, tromones in 137, and trumets in 143 lay nice and sotly ehind the soloists Listen to the soloists, and i you can t hear the solo, you are too loud!
