4 BIOGRAPHY Paul Dooley's music has een descried as "imressive and eautiul" y American comoser Steve Reich. Mr. Dooley's ath has emraced not only his Western Classical heritage, ut also a cross-cultural range o contemorary music, dance, art, technology and the interactions eteen the human and natural orlds. Dooley is a Lecturer in Perorming Arts Technology at the niversity o Michigan. While at the niversity o Michigan, Dooley has taught courses in electronic music, co-directed the 00 Midest Comosers Symosium and in 0 as coordinator o the ONCE. MORE. Festival, a 0 year anniversary o the ONCE Festival o Contemorary Music. He studied comosition rimarily ith comosers Michael Daugherty, Bright Sheng, Evan Chamers, Frank Ticheli, Stehen Hartke and Frederick Lesemann. Dooley s and comositions Point Blank (01) and Masks and Machines (01) ere recently commissioned y consortiums organized y the niversity o Miami Frost Wind Ensemle conducted y Gary Green, and erormed at venues such as the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) National Conerence and The Midest Clinic. Dooley s Meditation at Lagunitas (01) as commissioned y the American Bandmasters Association and the niversity o Florida, and remiered at the ABA Annual Conerence. Dooley s recent orchestral ork includes: Mavericks (01), insired y the legendary sur reak o the shore o Hal Moon Bay in Northern Caliornia, commissioned y the American Youth Symhony, and remiered in Disney Hall in March 01 conducted y Alexander Treger; Coast o Dreams (01), insired y early Los Angeles activist Charles Lummis, remiered y the Los Angeles-ased Young Musicians Foundation Deut Orchestra, conducted y Roger Kalia, and y the Amarillo Symhony conducted y acomo Raael Bairos; Run or the Sun (01), commissioned y the Ne York Youth Symhony, and remiered in March 01 at Carnegie Hall, conducted y oshua Gersen; Point Blank (011) remiered y Santa Cruz s Carillo Festival Orchestra and Ne York City-ased ne music ensemle Alarm Will Sound. 7 COMPOSER S NOTE Masks and Machines (01) as commissioned y a consortium o ind ands organized y Timothy Shade in honor o Gary Green's retirement rom the Frost School o Music at the niversity o Miami. Masks and Machines is insired y the early tentieth century orks o Bauhaus artist Oskar Schlemmer, and the Neoclassical music o Igor Stravinsky. I admire the simlicity o shaes and color in Schlemmer's orks such as the "Bauhaus Stairay" and "Triadic Ballet" as ell as the renaissance and aroque musical inluences in Stravinsky's "Pulcinella." Masks and Machines contains three contrasting character ieces eaturing renaissance rass music, Baroque ortsinnung in virtuosic mallet ercussion, lush ooe, clarinet and assoon solos, and machine-like lute ris. - Paul Dooley
