It is adapted rom Wasserman s non-musical 5 teleplay, I, Don Quixote, hich as in turn inspired by Miguel de Cerantes s seenteenth-century masterpiece Don Quixote. It tells the story o the mad knight, Don Quixote, as a play ithin a play, perormed by Cerantes and his ello prisoners as he aaits a hearing ith the Spanish Inquisition. The original 5 Broaday production ran or, perormances and on ie Tony Aards, including Best Musical. The musical has been reied our times on Broaday, becoming one o the most enduring orks o musical theatre. This suite eatures the beloed numbers I, Don Quixote, Dulcinea, Little Bird, and The Impossible Dream scored or concert band ith ne, resh rhythms and contemporary harmonies set ithin symphonic and Latin-pop styles. 2 NOTES TO THE CONDCTOR The opening trumpet solo should be ery ree and mysterious, ith the lo brass chords proiding a smooth base o chordal support. The triplet igure in the lo brass at measure can be approached ith a little edge, as you eel is appropriate. The ull band entrance on the aso Doble at measure should be ery crisp! Allo your percussionists to be ery animated in their perormance, both here and the rest o the piece as ell. The castanets and maracas are notated, but there is certainly room or ad lib i the players are proicient in the Latin-pop style. The lo brass melody at measure, and the clarinet, saxophone, and horn melody at should be ery bold, conident, and articulate. The chorus o I, Don Quixote at measure should be ery grand! Again, let your percussionists (and all players, or that matter) be ery animated ith the music here. The Latin-pop style is o utmost importance or the success o this section! At measure, let your lo brass bite o as much as they can che ith the oodinds sirling aggressiely on top o the ensemble. At measure 5, tell your horns and saxes to not hold back! The style should change drastically at measure 5 at the beginning o Dulcinea. The accompaniment in lo reeds and lo brass should be ery smooth and loing. (I you hae a pianist, tell your ind players to mimic the smooth, pedaled style o the piano here.) The lute solo at measure 5 should be ery ree and longing. I the soloist is particularly adanced, allo him/her to add ornamentation as you both eel is suitable. The sorzando at measure should be ery cinematic! At measure, eel ree to use as much rubato as you eel the phrases need. Tug the heart strings here, but sae a little room or the climax o this section at measure 0. Milk it here! The dynamic in the upper oodinds at measure should be ery sudden and careully approached. (It is recommended that you tell your ensemble that the lyric that happens in the song here is the ord, hispers. ) Ater a dramatic inish, Dulcinea dies aay at measure. The ritard is completely up to your taste here. Careul attention should be gien to the intonation in the upper oodinds at the D maor chord at measure! Measure 00 begins a transition to the home stretch. Again, hae your percussionists and instrumentalists be ery animated here. Horns and saxes can really dig into their igure at 0! The trombone solo at measure 0 should be almost comical. Tell your soloist to not take the smears lightly! The notated rubato can be as much or as little as you see it. The castanets and maracas should be approached ery careree and behind the soloist. This call and anser section should be marked by a nonchalant-ness in the soloist and a boldness by the ull ensemble s lourish! EW RE IEW REVI VIEW The Impossible Dream begins at measure 0 and should be a ery smooth, stately bolero. The snare drum should be ery precise and crisp. The chorus statement and measure 0 should be ery determined, ith the ritardandos at measures and pushing strongly into the grandiose section at measure 5. Let you horns shine here! The tempo picks back up at measure, building to a strong, exciting tag ending. Again, your horns and saxes should rip through the ensemble! Measure to the end should be no holds barred! Be sure the ensemble gets don to a good mezzo piano at measure so the subsequent crescendo can be ery aggressie. Let the inal musical Dulcinea quote in the saxes, horns, and euphonium be ery prominent, ith the inal our measures as aggressie as possible, building to a bold, exciting inish! ercussion note: I no drumset is aailable or player present, you may choose to substitute snare drum, bass drum, toms, and appropriate cymbals.
