2 Astract The Donnelly Oera is a one-act chamer oera ased on an inamous Southestern Ontario event: the murder o the Donnelly amily in 10 The liretto as ritten ith the consultation o various historical sources Modern text setting ractices are utilized ith careul attention to the use o erect rhymes and natural syllaic emhasis to hel maximize audience comrehension The oera uses traditional vocal archetyes o aria, recitative, and ensemle singing The main ocus o the oera is the dramatic ortrayal o the events that took lace leading u to the second murder trial It is ritten or our vocalists (sorano, mezzo-sorano, tenor, aritone) and ive instrumentalists: clarinet, horn, cello, iano, and ercussion, (timani, chimes, toms, cymal, and triangle) and is aroximately 25 minutes in length Keyords Music, oera, Canadian oera, the Donnellys, Canadian history, chamer music ii
