The Vols remained undefeated in midweek games this season (5-0) with a 8-0 win over Kennesaw State on Tuesday night. Lexi Overstreet hit her second grand slam this year and fifth for the Vols this season in Tuesday s win over Kennesaw State. The program record is eight, which was set back in Overstreet s home run was also the 25th of her career, tying her for 10th all-time at Tennessee. The Vols are batting.292 as a team and have driven in 91 runs, nearly 32 percent of their total runs, this season with two outs. Tennessee swept Texas A&M in its only previous trip to Knoxville back in The Vols scored 21 runs in three game against the 5th ranked Aggies in that series. The Vols have swept both of their SEC home series this season, taking all three games from No. 25 Mississippi State two weeks ago while also sweeping Arkansas earlier this year. Tennessee ranks among the top five in the SEC in 12 offensive categories. Overstreet and Meghan Gregg are tied for fifth in the SEC with 43 RBIs this season. UT has gotten on a solid mix of pitching and offensive production this season. They rank 16th in the nation with a 2.15 team ERA. They also rank in the top 25 nationally of the following offensive categories: batting average (22nd), scoring (8th), on-base % (6th), slugging % (15th) and steals/game (22nd). Tennessee has 10 players with double-digit RBIs and seven with 20-plus runs driven in. The Vols also have seven players batting.313 or better. UT currently has five players with on-base streaks of eight games or longer. (Geer, Overstreet, Gaffin, Gregg, Leach) Megan Geer has reached base in 11 straight games and in 36 of UT s 38 games this season. The junior is tied for third in the SEC with 43 runs and is 20th in the country with 1.13 runs per game. Geer is batting.450 as the Vols leadoff hitter and Tennessee is 17-3 when she bats in the leadoff spot. Aubrey Leach is on a career-best eight-game hit streak and has also scored a run in six straight games. Rainey Gaffin is currently leads the SEC with 16 games finished and is tied for second with four saves. Erin Gabriel ranks fifth in the SEC with 123 strikeouts and her 9.0 strikeouts/seven innings ranks 25th in the NCAA. The Vols went in 2015 and advanced to their seventh Women s College World Series Appearance in program history. UT was picked to finish fifth in the SEC Preseason Coaches Poll and Rainey Gaffin was named to the Preseason All-SEC Team. Senior Rainey Gaffin was named to the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Top 50 Watch List Tennessee returns nine players from last year s team, including NFCA All-American Rainey Gaffin and SEC All-Freshmen team selections Meghan Gregg & Scarlet McSwain. UT s 10-member freshmen class was rated No. 2 in the nation by Full Count Softball and included five players on the Hot 100 list. (Vines, Leach, Rowland, Lockman, Bush) Tennessee returns its three top pitchers from a year ago and added three freshmen pitchers to the rotation. Tennessee brings back 68 percent of its run production from last season. The Vols return players who accounted for 64 of their program-record 100 home runs last season. Three current Vols were named to the U.S. Women s Elite Team this summer. (Gaffin, Gregg, Vines) Tennessee co-head coaches Ralph & Karen Weekly enter their 15th year at the helm of Tennessee Softball. They boast a (.766) record at UT and have led the program to 12 straight NCAA Tournament appearances. UT co-head coach Karen Weekly enters this season with a career record of , just 16 wins shy of 950 for her career. WEEK 1 (KAJIKAWA CLASSIC) The Vols went 4-2 with two wins over teams that made the 2015 NCAA Tournament (BYU & Northwestern). Erin Gabriel went 2-1 and posted 10-plus strikeout in all three of her starts, totaling 34 for the week. She threw a complete-game shutout with 13 Ks in the Vols season-opening 5-0 victory over Creighton. Gabriel also become the first Tennessee pitcher to strike out 10-plus batter in three straight appearances since Ellen Renfroe accomplished the feat in Freshmen Aubrey Leach and Brooke Vines both batted over.430 and combined for 20 hits, nine runs, 10 RBIs and seven steals. In UT s 15-3 win over BYU, Leach went 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs while Vines went 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs. UT had four players bat over.400 and four players drive in at least five runs. The Vols averaged 7.3 runs per game and 9.3 runs per game in their four wins. WEEK 2 NOTES (MICHELE SMITH INVITATIONAL) The Vols went 4-1 with run-rule victories over Oklahoma State, Fordham and DePaul. Tennessee improved its all-time record in Clearwater, Fla., to UT averaged 9.2 runs per game in its five contests and scored 10 or more three times. Shaliyah Geathers had a monster week, batting.471 with six runs, five doubles and 10 RBIs. She set a new career high in RBIs twice, first with four against Oklahoma State and again with five against DePaul. The Vols hit a season-high three homers in a 16-4 win over DePaul on Sunday. Megan Geer hit a pair of home runs on the week to increase her teamleading total to three. Rainey Gaffin hit her first two home runs of the year and also recorded her first two saves of the season. Erin Gabriel posted a perfect 3-0 record for the week. WEEK 3 NOTES (EASTON BAMA BASH) The Vols went 2-2 with two wins over Marshall and a pair of 1-run losses to No. 15 Arizona & No. 4 Alabama. Matty Moss, Meghan Gregg & Megan Geer were all named to the alltournament team. Moss threw a complete-game one-hitter in an 18-0 win over Marshall & followed that with 5.2 scoreless innings of relief against No. 4 Alabama before giving up three late runs. Moss leads the team with a 1.58 ERA. Meghan Gregg batted.538 with four runs, four doubles, two home runs, 10 RBIs and a slugging percentage. The sophomore posted a new career high with seven RBIs in the Vols 18-0 win over Marshall On Feb. 27. Megan Geer also had a strong weekend, posting six hits, four runs, three extra-base hits and seven RBIs. Geer went 3-for-3 with three runs and four RBIs in Tennessee s 18-0 win over Marshall on Feb. 27. Geer leads the team with 18 runs and 18 RBIs and has reached base in 15 straight games. UT nearly knocked off No. 4 Alabama, coming back from a 3-run deficit to take a 5-3 lead before giving up three runs with two outs in the seventh inning. WEEK 4 NOTES (DAYTON/TENNESSEE INVITATIONAL) The Vols started the week with a 3-1 win over Dayton on Monday. It was UT s 16th straight victory in a home opener. UT went 5-0 over the weekend to win the Tennessee Invitational. Four of their five wins came by run-rule and they outscored their opponents 48-4 in the tournament. Lexi Overstreet led the team with a.538 batting average, nine runs, 10 RBIs and two home runs for the week. She also had a slugging percentage. Erin Gabriel went 3-0 for the week to improve to 9-2 on the year. She also had 15 strikeouts to bring her season total to 78, tops in the SEC. Matty Moss went 2-0 and didn t allow a run all week. She had a careerhigh nine strikeouts vs. Green Bay on Saturday and has been victorious in her last four starts. Freshman Bria Bush earned her first-career win on Friday as the Vols beat Green Bay, Rainey Gaffin picked up a pair of saves for the week and is now tied for the SEC lead with four. WEEK 5 NOTES (BELMONT/ARKANSAS) The Vols improved to all-time against in-state opponents and won their 85th straight against teams from the Volunteer State with Tuesday s 16-0 win over Belmont. UT scored 10 runs in the first inning against the Bruins, its most in any one inning this season. Tennessee swept Arkansas to start SEC play 3-0 for the first time since Meghan Gregg batted.400 for the week and led the team with two homers and 10 RBIs. Three of their four wins on the week came by way of run rule. Rainey Gaffin also had a solid week with a.556 batting average and eight RBIs. She also earned her second win of the year in the circle in Game 3 vs. Arkansas on Saturday. WEEK 6 NOTES (UNF/FLORIDA) The Vols extended their season-long win streak to 11 games with a 9-4 win at North Florida on Wednesday. Tennessee scored a season-high six runs in the seventh inning in the win over the Ospreys. Megan Geer went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in UT s win over UNF while Lexi Overstreet & Gretchen Aucoin hit back-to-back home runs. The Vols were swept by the top-ranked Florida Gators over the weekend. It was the first time Tennessee has been swept since 2011, which also came at Florida. Despite losing all three games, Tennessee held the Gators to six or fewer hits in all three games. UF has only been held to six hits or less three times all season before that. After entering last week having given up the most home runs among SEC teams, Vol pitchers did not surrender a single long ball last week. WEEK 7 NOTES (JACKSONVILLE/MISSISSIPPI STATE) The Vols improved to 10-0 at home with a 10-0 (5) win over Jacksonville on Tuesday. Erin Gabriel threw her second-career perfect game and the 14th in program history in the win over Jacksonville. Erin Gabriel also surpassed the 100-strikeout mark for the season with seven punchouts against the Dolphins. Gretchen Aucoin hit a three-run homer and tied a career-high with four RBIs in the win of Jacksonville. The Vols swept No. 25 Mississippi State to earn their first three wins over a ranked foe this season and improve to 13-0 at home. Feshman Brooke Vines led the team with five RBIs in the series. She also hit her SEC-leading fourth triple and an inside-the-park home run, the first homer of her career. UT scored six-plus runs in all three games of the series and 23 total against an MSU pitching staff that entered the series with the fourth best team ERA in the nation (1.33). Erin Gabriel, Rainey Gaffin and Matty Moss all picked up a win during the series. WEEK 8 NOTES (LIPSCOMB/MISSOURI) The Vols extended their winning streak over in-state opponents to 86 straight games with a 7-1 victory over Lipscomb on Tuesday. Meghan Gregg drove in a game-high four runs and extended her hit and RBI streak to five games in the win over the Lady Bisons. Brooke Vines had two hits and an RBI to extend her hit and RBI streak to four games in Tuesday s win at Lipscomb. UT earned its fourth straight win over a ranked opponent in seriesopening win over No. 15/15 Missouri. Rainey Gaffin threw her third straight complete game in SEC play in UT s 7-3 win over the Tigers in the series opener. Aubrey Leach had a hit and scored a run in all three games of the series at Mizzou. Leach has now recorded a hit in seven straight games and scored a run in five straight. Megan Geer led the team with six hits, two doubles, four RBIs, a.727 slugging percentage and a.615 on-base percentage during the series at Missouri. WEEK 9 NOTES (KENNESAW STATE/TEXAS A&M) The Vols remained unbeaten at home (14-0) with a 8-0 (5) win over Kennesaw State on Tuesday night. Tennessee improved to 5-0 in midweek games and 19-2 in games over non-power 5 opponents this season with the win over Kennesaw State. Lexi Overstreet hit her third-career grand slam and second of the season in the win over the Owls. Aubrey Leach extended her hit streak to eight games and her runs scored streak to six games in the win over KSU. WHO S HOT? Megan Geer (Jr. - 3B/CF) Geer has reached base in 11 straight games and has reached base in 36 of Tennessee s 38 games this season. Geer also has recorded a hit in nine of the past 11 games and leads the team with 41 total. Over UT s past 10 games, Geer leads the Vols with a.406 batting average, 13 hits, 12 runs, four doubles, one triple, a.594 slugging percentage, 19 total bases and six steals. The Los Alamitos, Calif., native scored five runs and recorded four RBIs last week. Geer currently is tied for third in the SEC with 43 runs and ranks 20th in the nation in runs per game, averaging 1.13 per contest. The junior is batting.450 in the leadoff spot for the Vols this season. UT is 17-3 when she bats first in the order. 2
