My name is Mrs. Nicole Berge- MacInnes and I am the proud principal of ROK. I would like to express how fortunate I am to have been given the opportunity to be part of this unique school. ROK prides itself in being a Positive Behavior Support (PBS) school that provides the tools for students to cope with emotional challenges. The core values of the PBS program are, Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Actively Engaged, and together with your support as the parents/guardians, we will work to maintain these values throughout the year. Communication is key to the success of the program at ROK. The teachers, clinicians, and administration are available in person, by telephone and to provide guidance and support. Our school theme for this year is: Be a Champion! The faculty and staff at ROK will motivate, inspire, and serve as your child s advocate. Our goal is to champion for all of the students and strive to make their experiences at ROK positive and fulfilling. Together we will succeed! PBS Core Values: BE SAFE BE RESPECTFUL BE ACTIVELY ENGAGED
2 P A G E 2 This year we will all work together to create and maintain a positive and safe environment in our school. As part of that process, we will be focusing on our school district s Student Code of Conduct and nine core values. These values are important to living a good life, being a model student, and having a positive impact on others. Above all, we will be emphasizing and celebrating positive behavior. Working together we can make a difference, but it all starts with you. You have the power to make good choices, demonstrate positive behaviors, and make values matter. For the month of September, we continue to focus on the core value of RESPECT. RESPECT YOURSELF. Self-respect can help you fulfill your potential. You must know that you are a valuable ROK Champion. Work to maintain your own high standards and achieve the goals you want to achieve. Don t waste your time doing what you think will impress your Facebook friends or give you bragging rights. It is much more impressive to succeed at doing what you want to do instead of following the path that everyone else has taken. I challenge all our ROK Champions to choose your own path! Respect yourself. If you do not others won t either. Remember, the world sees what you put out there so hold yourself to a high standard of grace and elegance. -Newlymynted Ms. Lira s class are all Champions! R O K N E W S F L A S H

4 V O L U M E 1 1 I S S U E 1 P A G E 4 Zika Information Living in Florida, mosquitoes are seemingly part of our everyday life. However, many children don t know mosquitoes not only make them itch, but can carry diseases like Zika and West Nile virus. Not all mosquitoes are the same. Different mosquitoes spread different diseases and are more likely to bite at certain times of the day. Some mosquito species bite during the day, such as mosquitoes that can spread chikungunya, dengue and Zika viruses. Other species of mosquitoes bite most often at dawn and dusk, including those that can transmit West Nile virus. To help prevent infection and to reduce the spread of mosquito-borne diseases, it is important for kids and parents to practice basic mosquito bite prevention: cover skin with long clothing and repellant and Spill sources of standing water. Fewer mosquito bites reduces everyone s risk for illness and a smaller mosquito population means fewer bites. Mosquitoes can breed in as little as one teaspoon or a bottle cap of water. Kids can help in the fight against mosquitoes when they Spill the Water! around their home and neighborhood. Visit for more info!
