1 THUNDERBIRD TIMES November 2015 Dear Arrowhead Families, It appears that winter has officially begun! As is the case in Colorado, this often means that we may go to sleep with a different weather forecast and wake up the next morning with inches of snow on the ground. So let me use this as an opportunity to review our cold weather procedures WINTER WEATHER REMINDER: At Arrowhead, our recess and lunch schedules remain the same during the wintertime. Please count on your child going outside for recess unless there is severe weather such as lightning, heavy rain/snow, or a wind-chill temperature below 20 degrees. These decisions are made after the start of the school day and may be different for grade levels/age groups of children at various times of day so please send your child to school with a winter coat, gloves/mittens, hats and BOOTS every day during these winter months. Every child benefits from and enjoys a short outside recess even when the temperature drops as long as they are prepared! DELAYED START/SCHOOL CLOSURE INFORMATION: Cherry Creek School District will call a Delayed Start when early morning conditions are not deemed serious enough to close school but are likely to cause delays. School bus stop pickup times and school times may be delayed. This information will be available through multiple sources: an automated phone call to your phone numbers listed in Powerschool, the district website ( the district weather line, and local TV stations 4, 7 and 9. When a delayed schedule is called, elementary schools are delayed ONE HOUR. That means that Arrowhead will start at 9:45 a.m. When there is a delayed start ALL morning activities and clubs are canceled. Before & After Care will operate during their normal hours (you must be signed up for Before & After Care to attend). When early morning weather and road conditions or other emergency situations are deemed hazardous, the district may announce closure of schools through the website, district weather line, local TV and radio stations, and an automated phone call as soon as possible. If you see that Cherry Creek School District is closed, do not send your child to school. Arrowhead Elementary will be closed, as well as the Before & After Care program. I hope this helps you plan as the Colorado snow starts to fall this coming winter season. You can help by watching the news for Delayed Starts and School Closure information instead of calling the front office. Remember delays and closures are for safety of all children; however we will try to maintain a regular school schedule when possible to honor learning. When the weather is cold and wet, more parents drive their children to school. On days like this we really need your help to ensure that all students are safe. Please do not stop to let your child out at the front door. This causes a major traffic concern on Bates Ave. We ask that you pull all the way through our front drive area so other cars may get into the parking lot. To provide students with more time to arrive safely, we often delay our attendance and if you feel it is unsafe to travel during the inclement weather you may excuse your child by calling our Attendance Line: Warmly, Roberta Ballard
2 We would like to ask for your help in keeping our students safe at Arrowhead. Here are just a few reminders: *Please do not drop students off prior to 8:30 am unless they are heading into the cafeteria for breakfast beginning at 8:15 am. We do not have adult supervison outside prior to 8:30 am and this could put children at risk if they are alone. *There are no dogs allowed on school property. This helps to maintain a safe environment for students during arrival and dismissal times. *Students may ride their scooters, skateboards or bicycles to school. They must dismount and walk or carry them anytime they are on school property. Tid Bits Parent Forms Updates Parents can always go to the web-based forms to updated information that may change during the year. Cell Phone Usage at School Arrowhead is a not phone zone. Please finish all conversations before entering the school.

Since the cold and flu season is upon us, we want to remind you of some basics steps you and your children can take to stay well. Please enjoy this video with your family and with our best wishes for your good health!! November is Diabetes Awareness Month! Early detection is essential for prompt treatment. Please see the following from the International Diabetes Foundation for more information: gp/warning-signs How to Avoid Double Dosing on Medicines this Season Cold and flu season has returned like clockwork. As you hit the over-the-counter aisle and prepare to combat runny noses and sore throats, remember to double check medicine labels so you don't accidentally double up on medicines containing acetaminophen. Acetaminophen is a common drug ingredient-more than 50 million Americans use it weekly to treat pain, fever, and cold and flu symptoms. It's safe and effective when used as directed, but taking more than directed is an overdose and can lead to liver damage. Learn more at KnowYour-
