30 Years of Awareness STOCKPORT The more you know of your history, the more liberated you are. Maya Angelou 1
Message from Councillor Walter Brett Deputy Mayor of Stockport Black History Month presents fantastic opportunities to celebrate the huge contribution BME communities has in society. During the month of October, Stockport will be raising awareness through events that encourage participatory involvement for all the community. The programme of events includes: Celebration of Fashion An exhibition at Stockport Libraries of Black Authors Award evening Presentation about World War 1 and Colonized People and much more I believe that celebrations like Black History Month are a great way to bring communities together to learn, share and grow. This helps to strengthen the social fabric of the community. I welcome all of Stockport to celebrate Black History Month." My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together Desmond Tutu 2
Black History celebrates and raises awareness of histories untold, past achievements and positive contributions that people from African and Caribbean descent have made in society. Dr Carter Godwin Woodson a historian established the event in America in February He created "Negro History Week" as a way of spreading knowledge about black people around the world. The United Kingdom first recognised the celebration as an annual event in Stockport joined in celebrating Black History Month annually in Since then it has continued to be an important event in the calendar. Almost everything we do; the clothes we wear food we eat, architecture, medicine, sports and of course the music we hear every day, has been heavily influenced by Black people and culture. Today almost every region in the UK celebrates Black History during the month of October. We have to talk about liberating minds as well as liberating society -Angela Davies 3
4 You must never be fearful of what you are doing if it is right - Rosa Parks
Libraries around Stockport will be displaying Books written by Black Authors, and also raising awareness of BME individuals that have made a positive contribution in Stockport during the month of October. Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. -Nelson Mandela 5
