Indiana GIS Local Resolution NHD Applications Indiana State GIS Conference May 7, 2013
Agenda Topics I. Indiana s National Hydrography y Data II. Accessing NHD Data III. Demonstrations Using Local NHD Data IV. Stewardship of Indiana s NHD Presenters, Waters Workgroup Members Mike Martin, Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources David Nail, United States Geological Survey Dave Knipe, Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources
Indiana s Existing Statewide Hydrography Data Contents and Status Part I
Surface Waters Framework Dataset IGIC s - Waters Framework Dataset Workgroup Established National Hydrography y Dataset (NHD) as the statewide framework dataset for surface waters
National Hydrography Dataset Surface water component of the National Map
watersheds National Hydrography Dataset Vector data for mapping and modeling streams, rivers, canals, ditches lakes,,p ponds, reservoirs, marshes streamgages other features
National Hydrography Dataset Can be used in GIS for general mapping and analysis of surface-water systems Can be used in CAD as planimetric basemap data National Hydrography Dataset
National Hydrography Dataset Enables the modeling of water flow in GIS applications National Hydrography Dataset
National Hydrography Dataset Indiana data stewardship is responsibility of State GIO partnership with IGIC National Hydrography Dataset
Project to Improve Indiana s NHD Correct & Upgrade NHD to Local Resolution Correct the existence and the locations of physical features using 2005 and newer Orthophotography and LiDAR Align features to the orthophotography, good at scale of 1:2,400 or 1:1, Remove inconsistencies between USGS quadrangles Improve naming of features Improve etwork connectivity and flow direction Result in statewide water flow model of 2005 or later water features, ensuring connectivity and modeling across community boundaries Statewide stream addressing system with linear referencing
Results: Increase in Number of Features High-Res in RED Local Res in BLUE 49% increase in acres of waterbodies 134% increase in acres of areas 409% increase in miles of flowlines
Results: Improved Alignment High Res / RED Local / YELLOW

Part IV NHD Stewardship and Maintenance
National Hydrography Dataset Indiana data stewardship is responsibility of State GIO partnership with IGIC Continued Stewardship
Continued Stewardship Maintenance after the Upgrade Critical to providing a statewide dataset that can be beneficial to users across the state at all levels Names of features Classifications of features Presence or location of features Help wanted
Workflow of Future Maintenance Continued Stewardship
Continued Stewardship Proposing Names for Un-Named Features All names in NHD must first be in the national Geographic Names Information System, GNIS 1. Local reviewer proposes a new name 2. Local Name Authority is notified of submitted name and reviews the request/proposal. 3. Indiana NHD reviews approved local submission. 4. The Indiana BGN meets to review and approve or reject the new name. If the name is rejected, the Actors in steps #1 - #3 are notified of the decision. 5. If approved, the Indiana BGN, or other party, submits the proposed name change to the US BGN.
