Lecture 2 Introduction to ESRI s ArcGIS Desktop and ArcMap
Outline ESRI What is ArcGIS? ArcGIS Desktop ArcMap Overview Views Layers Attribute Tables Help! Scale Tips and Tricks
ESRI Environmental Systems Research Institute Founded in 1969 ESRI software is commonly viewed as one of the most widely distributed and utilized GIS packages. Due to the level of user-friendliness and support documentation, it is an great place to start learning GIS.
An integrated collection of GIS software products for building and deploying a complete GIS wherever it is needed - on desktops, servers, or custom applications; over the Web; or in the field. What is ArcGIS?
ArcGIS Desktop ArcGIS Desktop is software that allows you to discover patterns, relationships, and trends in your data that are not readily apparent in databases, spreadsheets, or statistical packages. ArcEditor includes all the functionality of ArcView and adds a comprehensive set of tools to create, edit, and ensure the quality of your data. ArcInfo includes all the functionality of ArcEditor, ArcView, and ArcReader and adds advanced spatial analysis, extensive data manipulation, and high-end cartography tools. ArcView is a full-featured geographic information system (GIS) software for visualizing, managing, creating, and analyzing geographic data.
ArcMap and ArcCatalog Each ArcGIS Desktop product includes two applications: ArcMap & ArcCatalog ArcCatalog The ArcGIS application used for browsing, managing and documenting geographic data. ArcMap The ArcGIS application used to view, analyze, and edit geographic data as well as create professional-quality maps, graphs, and reports.
ArcMap ArcMap is the ArcGIS application you use to explore and edit geographic data, perform analysis, and create professional-quality maps, graphs, and reports. When you work in ArcMap, you work with a map document file, which has the.mxd file extension. Ex. StreetMap.mxd
The ArcMap Interface
Data View The Data View is an all-purpose view for exploring, displaying, and querying the data on your map. Lets you focus on the data in a single data frame for purposes such as editing or analysis. Two ways to access the Data View: 1. Click the View menu and click Data View 2. Use the Data View button on the lower left of the view window.
Layout View In layout view, you'll see a virtual page on which you can place and arrange map elements, and you can do almost everything you can in data view, plus design your map. Two ways to access the Layout View: 1. Click the View menu and click Layout View 2. Use the Layout View button on the lower left of the view window.
Layers in ArcMap Geographic information is displayed on a map as layers; each layer represents particular types of features such as streams, lakes, and highways. Layers are listed in the ArcMap table of contents and can be further organized into data frames. A layer references the data contained in coverages, shapefiles, geodatabases, images, grids, and so on. The term layers is also often used as a synonym for these format types. The order of layers within the table of contents is important; the layers at the top draw on top of those below them.
Attribute Tables A specific type or category of information associated with a geographic feature is called an attribute. Attributes are stored in the attribute table associated with the layer. Each attribute is a column or field. Each feature is a record (row).
Attribute Tables A feature on a GIS map is linked to its record in the attribute table by a unique numerical identifier (ID). The Unique ID of Nevada is stored in the OBJECTID field.
ArcToolbox Provides an organized collection of tools used for GIS analysis, data management, and data conversion. Opened from within ArcMap OR ArcCatalog.
Obtaining HELP What s This? Tool Shift+F1 ArcGIS Desktop Help F1 Key ESRI online support:
Understanding Scale Scale is the relationship between the size of features on a map and the size of the corresponding objects in the real world. Scale is commonly represented as a ration or representative fraction. Ex. 1:10,000 This means 1 unit on a map is equal to 10,000 units on the earth s surface. Large-Scale Map: Generally covers a small area in more detail. Small-Scale Map: Generally covers a large area in less detail.
Tips and Tricks Clear selected features: Tools Toolbar Grouping layers: Select layers to group, right click and choose Group. Shortcut Keys: Main Menus - Hold down the Alt key and press the underlined letter. Menu Items - Hold down the Ctrl key and press the underlined letter. Layer Properties Double-click layer or right-click and choose properties Effects Toolbar Quick access to layer visibility, transparency, brightness and contrast.
