1 George Mason University Department of Civil, Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering Dr. Celso Ferreira Prepared by Lora Baumgartner Exercise Topic: Downloading Spatial Data Objectives: a) Become familiar with the National Elevation Dataset (NED) and download data for elevation, land cover, hydrography, transportation and structures for your study area. b) Become familiar with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) data portals. c) Become familiar with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Water Data portal. d) Become familiar with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) portal 1

2 Part 1: The National Elevation Dataset: Download data for elevation, land cover, hydrography, transportation and structures. Download data for: Elevation NED 1/9 arc-second NED 1/3 arc-second n39w078 NED 1 arc-second Land cover NLCD 2001 NLCD 2006 NLCD 2011 Hydrography Staged sub-region USGS National Watershed Boundary Dataset 1. Browse to wer/. 2. Enter the street address into the search bar or manually zoom to the approximate location as shown. The GMU campus is located at 4400 University Drive, Fairfax, VA Note that multiple zoom factors (scales) are needed to collect all data. The scale is marked at the bottom of the map. 1:72,224 can be used to download all but the 1/3 arc-second and 1 arc-second DEM data. 2

3 4. Click the icon at the top of the page labeled Download Data. 5. From the drop-down menu, select the option to download by current map extent. 6. A list of available download themes is displayed. Select the themes for US Topo, Elevation DEM Products, Hydrography (NHD) & Watersheds (WDB), and Land Cover. 7. Click Next. 3

Under the US Topo menu, select the USGS US Topo 7.5 minute map for Fairfax, VA Under the Elevation DEM Products menu, select: USGS NED ned19_n39x00_w077x50_va_ni nenortherncos_2011 1/9 arcsecond x 15 minute IMG USGS Small-scale Dataset Meter Resolution Elevation of the Conterminous United States TIFF 4

Under the Hydrography (NHD) & Watersheds (WBD) menu, select: USGS National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) Best Resolution for Virginia State or Territory Shapefile USGS National Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) National Shapefile USGS National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) Best Resolution for HU HU-4 Subregion Shapefile. For more information about the USGS WBD hydrologic units and their naming systems, visit: Robohelpfiles/NHD_User_Guide /Feature_Catalog/Watershed_ Boundary_Dataset/Watershed_ Boundary_Dataset.htm To see the hydrologic units overlaid on the USGS NHD map, visit: viewer/nhd.html?p=nhd 5

Under the Land Cover menu, select: USGS 100-Meter Resolution Land Cover of the Coterminous United States 2015_01 TIFF National Land Cover Database 2011 Land Cover 3x3 Degree Extents National Land Cover Database 2006 (2011 edition) Land Cover 3x3 Degree Extents National Land Cover Database 2001 (2011 edition) Land Cover 3x3 Degree Extents. For more information about the USGS WBD hydrologic units and their naming systems, visit: Robohelpfiles/NHD_User_Guide /Feature_Catalog/Watershed_ Boundary_Dataset/Watershed_ Boundary_Dataset.htm 12. Click Next. 6

7 13. All menu items should be added to the cart in the left sidebar. Click Checkout. A link to the selected menu items will be delivered to you via Zoom out to approximately 1:288,895. Repeat Steps 4 through 7, selecting only Elevation DEM Products. Select: 15. Enter your address and click Place Order. 7

8 16. In the response from USGS, select Click here to download next to the requested menu items. 17. Save the downloaded menu items to your preferred file location. 8

9 Part 2: United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Download soils data for the GMU campus area. 1. Browse to /app/websoilsurvey.aspx. 2. Define your Area of Interest (AOI) by entering the George Mason University campus address under the Quick Navigation menu on the left sidebar. 3. Click View. 9

10 4. Using the hand tool and zoom tool, adjust the map view to view the entire campus. 5. Using the AOI Rectangle tool, select the view window extents. 6. Note the new AOI in green hatchmarks. Click Close. 10

11 7. Click the link at the top of the page for Description of Soil Survey Geographic (SSURGO) Database. 8. A Download Link will be created at the bottom of the same page. Click the link to download the requested soil data. 9. Save the downloaded menu items to your preferred file location. 11

13 Part 3: United States Geological Survey (USGS) Water Data portal Get streamflow data for: Tropical Storm Lee - ~09 September 2011 Hurricane Irene ~ August Site Number: Site Name: DIFFICULT RUN NEAR GREAT FALLS, VA Site Number: Site Name: ACCOTINK CREEK NEAR ANNANDALE, VA 1. Browse to 2. Click on Site Information. 3. Click on Site Information. 4. Select the check box labeled Site Number. 5. Click Submit. 13

14 6. Enter the Site Number. 7. Confirm that the Output Format is Table. 8. Click Submit. 9. Select the Site Number Link. 14

15 10. Click on Daily Data. 11. Select Discharge from the Available Parameters menu. 12. Enter the date range (including comparison days before and after) for the storm event. 13. Click Go. 14. Review the discharge data given. 15

16 15. Repeat Steps 12 through 14 for the same site, using the dates for the second storm event. 16. Repeat Steps 1 through 15 for the second site. 16

17 Part 4: National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) portal Get Precipitation Data Washington Dulles International Airport Ronald Regan Airport 1. Browse to 2. Click on Search Tool. 3. Select Precipitation Hourly from the Select Weather Observation Type/Dataset drop-down menu. 4. Select the date range (including comparison days before and after) for the storm event. 5. Select Stations from the Search For drop-down menu. 6. Enter the station name in the Enter a Search Term field. 7. Click Search. 17

18 8. In the left sidebar search results, click Add for the Dulles data. 9. In the search bar, enter the second station. 10. Click Search. 11. In the left sidebar search results, click Add for the Reagan Data. 12. Hover over the Cart icon at the top right of the screen. 13. Click on View all Items (2). 18

19 14. Select the button for Hourly Precipitation CSV. 15. Click Continue. 16. Check the box labeled Precipitation. 17. Click Continue. 19

20 18. Enter the preferred address. 19. Re-enter the preferred address. 20. Click Submit Order. A link to the selected menu items will be delivered to you via In the response from NOAA, click the link labeled Download Data. 22. Save the downloaded menu items to your preferred file location. Note that the output (precipitation) is given in units of 100ths of an inch. 20
