Test Format Review of Individual Test Elements Items to Bring Tips Links
General Test Format: Storyline Test Navigation Elements Identification of Landmarks, features, etc. Aerial/Satellite Photographs
General Test Format: Storyline Test Tom sees some helicopters flying over the Camp Lejeune area. Lt. Fisher said, A buddy of mine told me he was practicing his navigation today. He was going to hover at 34 35'30" latitude, and 77 20'16" longitude. Tom plotted the lat and long on the quad map. 20. What is the elevation of the ground at this location? (10 points) 21. How would you describe the topography at this location? Leavenworth depends on visitors for most of its income. A worker at the sewage disposal plant loans us his car so we can drive around a bit and spend money. We came here to buy apples, so that s OK with us. We drive a few hundred meters West from the plant, then North on an unnamed road. As we drive North on this road, we notice that the land along the East and West sides of the road are quite different. 31. How does the land along the East side of the road differ from the land along West side of the road? (Answer as: the East is and but the West is and )
Test may include, but is not limited to: Topographic Map Elements:

Some tips for students: Measuring curved lines takes PRACTICE Measure twice, answer once Practice together Use and be comfortable with different map scales and units Familiarity with aerial/satellite photography Review the rules of the event Practice with a timer Review your answers
Some Useful Resources: Google NC Science Olympiad there s a lot of info out there. This link contains discussions on several pertinent aspects including datums, projections, grids, etc. through the continue button (or the links on the left). The USGS has quite a few resources on this page: A useful tutorial on creating topographic profiles: This is a tool to test how quickly you can apply your knowledge on topo maps (the free access is pretty limited, but it s a place to start).
