2 House Organ Photography Contest Winners 2012 The House Organ Photography Contest is a Vanderbilt tradition, having been held every year since This year, more than 1,000 entries from Vanderbilt staff, faculty, students and volunteers were received, and Division of Public Affairs photography staff judged the entries, resulting in the extraordinary 12 images you see in the 2012 House Organ Calendar. HOUSEORGAN December 2011/January Years of House Organ BY WAYNE WOOD House Organ began publishing with the January 1982 issue. This issue is the December 2011-January 2012 issue. House Organ is 30. In this print edition, you ll find the 2012 House Organ Calendar, a Medical Center tradition since 1982, as well as some holiday news from around VUMC. The full 30th anniversary issue is at the House Organ website, houseorgan/. There will also be a House Organ ipad app, downloadable from the itunes app store in early December. Those of us who work on the publication are really excited about this new way of reading House Organ, and if you have an ipad, we really, really hope you ll download the app (it s free), take a look, and tell us what you think. Among the 30th Anniversary content you ll find online and in the app: Decade-by-decade highlights of some of the stories covered by House Organ over the years. When did the first ATM open at VUMC? When were photo badges first issued? Could that be a photo of somebody in Oncology smoking on the job? Is it true that where The Vanderbilt Clinic is now was once employee parking? A history of the publication, including a list of all the winners of the House Organ Photography and Writing contests. A scrollable gallery of every cover of every issue. Bill will hate this, but: Speaking of stories from a while back, there was a story in the June 1986 issue, headlined, Hance to direct news office. It noted that Bill Hance, city editor at the Nashville Banner, was coming to Vanderbilt to be director of News and Public Affairs. This December, more than 25 years later, Bill is retiring. When it was announced that Bill was coming over here, I got a call from veteran reporter Larry Brinton, who had worked with Bill at the Banner, and who at that time was working for WTVF Channel 5. Bill is a good guy, and you ll like working for him, Larry said. He added: He ll blow up and yell about something, and then five minutes later it s like nothing has happened. I have been at Vanderbilt for 30 years, Bill has been my boss for most of that time, and I will vouch for the scouting report I got from Larry 25 years ago. Bill has hired good people, let them do their jobs, challenged us, tried to keep us out of trouble, and runs what are surely the most entertaining staff meetings at Vanderbilt. I hope he continues to enjoy life, laugh a lot, and sing along to Hank Williams songs. And if he s reading this, you cannot believe how red his face is right now. November Rizwan Hamid, Pediatrics. 3 Purchase of tags, cookies, more supports Monroe Carell Jr. Children s Hospital at Vanderbilt The annual Friends of Monroe Carell Jr. Children s Hospital at Vanderbilt s Holiday Project is under way. A variety of cards (including photo cards), gift tags and wrapping paper, all designed by young patients and their siblings, are for sale. Other holiday gifts for sale include Christie Cookie tins, winter decaf coffee, and holiday java coffee. To see designs and order cards, visit or phone for more information or ordering assistance. Lauren Frank, age 12 Akina Shintani, age 6 Turkey giveaway slated for Friday, Dec. 16 This year s Vanderbilt Holiday Turkey Giveaway for full-time and part-time faculty and staff will take place on Friday, Dec. 16, at three locations: Langford Auditorium, One Hundred Oaks, and in Williamson County. At Langford the hours of the giveaway are from 6 a.m. to midnight, while at One Hundred Oaks the giveaway will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Turkey Giveaway for employees based in Williamson County will be from 3 to 6 p.m. at the parking lot behind the 2105 Edward Curd Lane Building. The Turkey Giveaway is for both Medical Center and University employees, and in order to pick up your holiday turkey, you must show your valid Vanderbilt photo ID. Where should you go to pick up your turkey? People whose work location is on the main campus and areas north of I-440, south of I-40, west of I-65 and east of West End Avenue, including on West End, should pick up turkeys at Langford Auditorium. All other Davidson County employees, including those at Green Hills locations, should pick up turkeys at One Hundred Oaks. Williamson County-based employees should go to the Edward Curd Lane location. The giveaway is limited to one turkey per person. There will be no rain checks or organized make-ups for people who aren t at work that day, so if you plan to be off, it s a good idea to plan to come by to pick up your turkey. Also, it s important to remember that each person must pick up his or her turkey in person; a co-worker or family member cannot pick up a staff member s turkey. There will be a limited number of Tofurkey Dinners, which will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Unclaimed turkeys will be donated to Second Harvest Food Bank. A turkey shuttle will run that day between Kirkland Hall and Medical Center North (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.), as well as between the 25th Avenue Garage and Medical Center North (6 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Regular shuttle routes will also be in effect. The Round Wing drop-off will be closed on Friday, Dec. 16, except for patient access, mobility-impaired employees and shuttles. Open parking will be available in the 25th Avenue Garage after 3 p.m. that day. Alternative arrangements must be made in advance for mobility-impaired employees.
