1 Life #3 Organization of Life Notebook Life #3 - Learning Targets List the 5 traits and 2 needs that all living things have in common. Arrange the organization of life. Classify organisms based upon their cell structures. Identify and explain the functions of specialized cells within an organ system. Identify and explain the functions of organs within an organ system. Explain how the body fights off infectious diseases. Life #3 - Vocabulary 1) Cells - The smallest unit of an organism that can carry on the life functions. 2) Tissues - A group of similar cells that work together to do the same job. 3) Organs - Structures made up of different types of tissues working together. 4) Organ System - A group of organs that works together to perform body functions. 5) Nucleus - Organelle that controls all the activities of a cell and contains DNA. 6) Organism - Any living thing that is made of cells, uses energy, reproduces, responds, and grows and develops. 7) Bacteria Helpful or disease causing microorganism made up of a single cell without a nucleus 8) Immunity being able to resist a disease 9) Virus a strand of heredity material capable of causing infection 10) Vaccine Substance usually injected into a person or animal to protect against a particular disease All Living Things

11 YTS#1 Organization of Life Stackable 1. Order the Organization of Life terms from smallest to largest. Goal: Create a visual representation of the terms for the Organization of Life. Directions: atom, tissue, organ system, organelle, molecule, organism, organ and cell. Smallest,,,,,,, Largest 2. Study the boxes (separate sheet of paper) and identify the box that would best represent each of the terms. 3. Write the appropriate term along the perimeter of each box (see example below). 4. Using a common theme for all, illustrate the terms. (Example- Use a dog theme throughout your entire project.) IMPORTANT- The atom and molecule you choose should be common in a living thing. Examples- Water, Carbon Dioxide, Oxygen gas, Glucose. Make sure important details are not in the top right corner. 5. Cut out each box. Atom Molecule 6.
