POE 2010 Back Bulbs Needed President's Corner: Your Orchids and Help Will Create a Success at POE What a delight to be totally caught up in this year's orchid shows! And how exciting to "pitch in" as the MOS display comes together for POE. Volunteers have put together the pieces of the display, getting us to the most important part: Where you MOS members offer your blooming orchids and your help as we transport the materials and set up the display on Wednesday, February 24, and take it down, clean up, and bring back the parts on February 28. I invite you to communicate how you wish to participate to me or with our show chairwoman, Mary Ann Aleandri. Her is: maleandri@comcast.net, phone is Dear BackBulb, February is "blooming" with orchid-related events including the MOS meeting featuring Paul Chim, who returns with the "offspring" of our 2009 orchid propagation event, POE and our MOS display, plus numerous orchid shows and sales. Are you also receiving the Back Bulb paper edition? Join us in saving MOS postage and paper! Simply send an and ask to be removed from the paper edition: marin.orchids@gmail.com. Thanks and enjoy! Sandra Merlo, Back Bulb Editor Monthly Meeting: On Tuesday, February 23, MOS members meet in the Livermore Room, Marin Art and Garden Center, 30 SIR FRANCIS DRAKE BLVD in ROSS (directly across from the Ross Police and Fire Dept at the Lagunitas Ave intersection). See you there! February 2010 Program Paul Chim has been growing cymbidiums since He has developed a concentrated growing program that encourages them to bloom in fewer years than they do with the more traditional growers. For example, he does not permit more than one new bulb per year, pinching off any others. Paul claims this allows the plant to concentrate more fully on the existing bulbs. His motto is "water weekly, weakly". He enjoys growing in coconut husk with perlite #3 for air space. His orchids have cold tolerance as he does not heat his greenhouse in winter but tells his plants to "be tough and survive". Ask him to talk about his epsom salts program which he claims produces fewer, stronger, better-looking leaves. In the winter, Paul allows his plants to rest and does not water them. When they are resting, they prepare to flower. Recommendations Paul enjoys sharing with orchid fanciers: grow something you like grow something that flowers easily for you find out what works for you and don't listen to anyone

2 else! Paul Chim's February MOS presentation has two purposes. Remember all those ribbons members and MOS won last year? What a delight to see so many well rewarded! I look forward to seeing MOS members receive many awards this year and I appreciate your support. We will do some final planning at our February meeting. Not only will we share in Paul's most recent orchid travels, he plans to bring us up to date about his nurturing of the offspring of the MOS 2009 participation in orchid s.e.x! Check out the pictures below to recall how we were all fascinated with the whole process. Remember members' rapt attention as the orchids were "mated" using tweezers in place of one of Mother Nature's matchmakers? See you there! And be sure to ask me about my "sequinglitter-mobile"! Lynne New Members, Renewals MOS welcomes new member Dennis Olivas and thanks renewing member! We are happy that we can enjoy your participation in 2010! 3 American Orchid Society San Francisco Orchid Society Pacific Orchid Expo Online Orchid Species Identification Special Award - Best Novice Entry Hawkinsara Koolau Sunset 'Hawaii' The orchid is known for its rich burgundy color, the results of two red parents. Judges at the Sonoma County Orchid Society's February Orchid Show obviously thought Lynne's plant was a fine example of the species and that had done an excellent job taking care of it! Here are a few pictures of that gorgeous beauty whose flowers are about 3 1/2 inches across: DUES are DUE!... and even overdue for some members. Ways to tell if your membership has expired: For snail mail: the expiration date on your label is outlined in red. For , you will receive a reminder postcard. Please renew your membership today! Together, we add quality to orchid cultivation and awareness. Photo Eric Hunt Your current membership ensures you will receive your next issue of the Back Bulb. Use the membership form at the bottom of the newsletter. Newsletter Contributions The Back Bulb wants your contributions of pictures of your orchid flowers. Include the name of the orchid and any other information you would like to share about it (culture, origin, growing tips, curiosities). Also, articles, events, news and subjects of interest to our orchid loving members are always welcome! Give a CD to Sandra Merlo at the monthly meeting, or marin.orchids@gmail.com by the 1st of each month for publication in the Lynne's plant also won a rosette and the special award for Novice entry! Review of January 2010 Program Eric Hunt on Orchids of Borneo. From comments heard after the meeting, it sounds like Borneo is now in a few members' travel plans! The "oohs" and "ahs" and applause showed how much we all enjoyed Eric's slides and stories of the fascinating indigenous species he encountered in His mix of pictures of local color and orchid trails and species created that level of enthusiasm. And what a variety of orchids. Pitcher plants the size of footballs, for example! Plants so small they have likely been trodden underfoot for generations! Below are samples of his pictures, three of orchids and one of chiles for sale in the market. Remember to be on the lookout for Eric's photography in Orchids, The Orchid Digest, The Orchid Review, Orkideer (magazine of Swedish Orchid Society), Gardener's World Magazine (UK), California

Bills says he covers culture extensively, species, new hybrids, growing from seed and hopefully clears up some problems with identification in a few species. If you want to attend, please give Lynne a call for directions. Greenhouse Tour with SCOS Tickets still available but space limited. On April 10th, SCOS and MOS orchid enthusiasts can enjoy a chartered bus trip to peruse the plant sales at UC Davis Arboretum, Howard Gunn's nursery, and Gold Country Orchids. These growers are not usually open to the public, so... send your reservation and check for $30 to Larry Mead, 254 Maria Lane, Santa Rosa 95409; Reserve now to ensure a seat. Plan to bring your own lunch as well as a box for your plants. MOS Has A "Blog" John has created a "blog" within the MOS website so that members can post articles about orchid topics. Sandra M. created an article about the benefits of joining each of us to save and label any back bulbs we end up with this year as we re-pot and divide our cymbidiums. Glenne grows these on and then sells the plants as they come into flower. The sales, held at Falkirk in San Rafael, benefit the public Demonstration Gardens at Falkirk. These gardens have been installed and maintained by Marin Master Gardeners. Please place your bulbs in paper or zip-lock bags with the cultivar name printed on plastic labels or written on the outside of the bag. All the bulbs from any one cultivar can be placed in a single bag. Bulbs for unknown cultivars are also welcome. Purpose and Vision of Marin Orchid Society The purpose of the Marin Orchid Society, our Mission and Vision, is: To provide support for those having common interests in the appreciation and culture of orchid plants, to broaden their interests and improve their knowledge To acquire and distribute to the members practical and scientific information about the collection, culture and propagation of orchids To arrange the dissemination of information through exhibits, lectures, access to publications, and any other means, for the encouragement of orchid growing To cooperate in and take part in activities of other Societies with purposes similar to those of this Society And, always... REMEMBER! Orchids are our group's only obsession! Enjoying this online version of the Back Bulb? To make it even better, bring your ideas for articles to the next meeting or me at marin.orchids@gmail.com. A separate containing a list of California Orchid Shows was sent to those on the list. Hope you enjoyed it. Sincerely, Sandra Merlo Back Bulb Editor Marin Orchid Society
