2 President Message Thanks to all who participated in the CNYOS Syracuse Show. It is important that we continue to support our sister Orchid Society as they have supported us through the years. Jane Trey, Carol Bayles, and I set up a display with several of you supplying orchids (photo attached). We did well with many ribbons and second place for our display. Thanks also to Linda and Jack Mandeville for teardown. Our next meeting will be on October 21st at 2pm at the church. On the agenda, we will be asking for volunteers for a nominations committee to find candidates for next year's officers. The elected officers are president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, one board member to replace Sharon Voorhees whose term is up and the AOS representative. The candidates will be presented at the November meeting with final vote in December. All other positions such as show chair, library, newsletter, website, etc. are appointments by the president. Also, we will have a discussion about the annual show. As you know, The Oakdale Mall, as with most Malls, has fallen on hard times. The floor traffic which we rely on is way down. They have lost three anchors and a lot of smaller stores. We have looked at other venues but there are also problems. The question will be is it cost effective and worthwhile to have a show at all. We can still have an enjoyable time without a show and still place a display in Syracuse. Finally, to end the meeting, we will have a speaker, Mr. Wade Hollenbach of Wade's Orchids, speaking on Introduction to Bulbophyllums. The genus Bulbophyllum with nearly 3000 species is one of the largest genera of the orchid family. Its widely diverse floral forms make bulbos fun to collect. I personally have many mounted specimens and have found them easy to grow. Mr. Hollenbach will be bringing orchids to sell. Hope to see you all there. 3 STOS Display at CNYOS 9/29-9/30/2018 Meeting Minutes for September STOS President, John Zygmunt, called the meeting to order at 1:15 pm. Approval of Minutes: A motion was made and accepted to approve the May 2018 Meeting Minutes Treasurer s Report: Jane reported that we currently have a balance of $ in our STOS account. Welcome New Members! John welcomed our new members: o o Barbara Dessel (joined at our May show) Michele Fruenhofer We are happy to have you as members of our orchid-loving family! October

4 Old Business: We are currently working on arranging for speakers for our upcoming meetings. We have Wade Hollenbach scheduled for our October meeting. Wade has several options for his presentation: Bulbophyllums; Warm-tolerant Masdevalias, or Greenhouses for the North. The members agreed that they would prefer hearing his Bulbophyllum presentation. New Business: Show 2019: o John discussed with members the need to start planning early; There are several things to think about: The Mall is in trouble it is losing a lot of stores, and there is little to no traffic there Vendors would not do well if there is little traffic/customers Should we even have the Show, or should we move to a new venue? One possibility mentioned was the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Binghamton. They hold the Master Gardener meetings there. May be worth checking into. Anne Quain stated that she would be stepping down as the Show Chairperson for 2019 and future shows; her mobility has been an issue. Central New York Orchid Society (CNYOS) will be conducting their Show at Beaver Lake in Syracuse in two weeks (Sept , with setup on Friday, 9/28). We will set up a display table, so we ll need plants from members for our display. Jane Trey and John Zygmunt have offered to do the set up on Friday, and Linda Mandeville will do the tear-down on Sunday. Linda will send out an to members to coordinate drop off of plants to Jane/John for the Show. Next month, we will need a nominating committee for our 2019 elections. The offices are: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Board Representative. Luis told our new members about our library. We have a large selection of books that can be borrowed from our library cabinet upstairs. Ben Cabot volunteered to be the librarian, and would bring a few sample books to each meeting for people to borrow, if they d like. Marissa Culbertson reminded members that we have a Facebook account; please like and/or share things, so that word spreads! Refreshments: Auction: We then we broke for some delicious, light refreshments After a short refreshment break, we conducted our September Auction. John and Peter did a great job in providing us with some beautiful orchids for auction. John spent a great deal of his time and effort repotting and mounting many of the orchids, getting them ready for sale. A big thank you goes out to Peter and John for all their hard work in making the auction such a great success! Every plant was sold!! Most members went home with at least one nice orchid to add to their collection! October

And that Orchids have the largest variety of flowers with the number of officially documented species standing at an amazing 25,000 plus? With so much variety, it should be no surprise that there are some amazing facts about Orchids that are not widely known. Except for areas with extreme hot or cold weather, Orchids practically grow everywhere in the world and scientist are discovering more new species as days go by. Here are 15 amazing facts about this special flower, which you will definitely find very fascinating The size of orchids depends on the species. They can be tiny as a penny or extremely large, weighing couple of hundred pounds. Grammatophyllum are medium-sized to very large orchids, including the giant orchid (Grammatophyllum speciosum), believed to be the largest orchid species in existence. Itspseudobulbscan grow to a length of 2.5 m. Plztystele jungermannioides, which is believed to be the smallest Orchid in the world grows a measly 2mm. Orchid Plants can develop into gigantic clusters weighing from several hundred kilograms to one ton. The roots form spectacular bundles. October

6 Plztystele jungermannioides - believed to be the world's smallest Orchid Each orchid flower is bilateral symmetric, which means that it can be divided in two equal parts. Size, shape and texture of leaves depend on the habitat. Orchids that live in dry climate have thick leaves covered with wax, while species that live in warm and humid areas have thin, elongated leaves. Certain species of orchids do not have leaves at all. Orchids do not have usual roots. They have rhizome, tuber or aerial roots. Orchids can live on the ground (terrestrial forms), attached to woody plants (epiphytic types) or under the ground. Certain species of orchids are parasitic. They are not able to produce food (sugar) using the sunlight and carbon dioxide (like other plants). Instead, they obtain food from fungi that live inside their roots. Bond between orchids and certain species of insects is tight and highly specialized. Petals have similar shape and color like female insects to attract males and ensure pollination. Ophrys apifera, better known as the Bee Orchid, lures male bees with its enticing smell and bee like appearance. When a male bee approaches the flower to mate, it becomes covered in pollen and is sent off to pollinate the next orchid it visits. October

7 The Bee Orchid Due to high specialization of pollination, extinction of insect means extinction of orchid (there is no one else who can pollinate it in the wild). Flower of orchid can survive from few hours to 6 months, depending on the species. Orchids produce several millions of miniature seeds. Only few seeds will develop into mature plant. The genus Orchis comes from an Ancient Greek word meaning testicle ; because of the shape of the bulbous roots. The term orchid, which is just a shortened form of the family Orchidaceae, was not introduced until Orchid seeds do not have an endosperm which provides nutrients required for the germination. Due to this fact all orchids (including non-parasitic forms) live in symbiosis with fungi during germination. Germination can last from couple of weeks to 15 years. People use orchids for numerous purposes. Substances isolated from orchids are used in industry of perfumes, spices and in traditional Asian medicine. October

8 Vanilla flavor is extracted from Vanilla planifolia, a species of orchid Vanilla is one of the best known and widely used flavors. It is extracted from the pod of Vanilla planifolia, which is a species of orchid. Orchids are very old plants.
