1 Super Blue Blood Moon Photo by Jaren De Guia A rare lunar event being called the "Super Blue Blood Moon" dazzled skywatchers around the world during the early hours of Wednesday morning. Starting at 3:45 AM our very own Physics Club had a very successful Super Blue Blood Moon Event with over 30 students and parents attending! They had photographers and telescopes, Starbucks and snacks, and--of course--geeky astrophysics talk all morning. Big shout out to Mr. Fournier and Mr. Dwyer for all their hard work and passion with Physics Club! What is a Super Blue Blood Moon? Lunar Eclipse + Supermoon + Blue Moon = Super Blue Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, so it casts its shadow on the moon. The eclipsed moon will look reddish (often called a blood moon ). Not as exciting or as rare as a solar eclipse but this one did have something special, it happened during a... Supermoon - This is a full moon that happens to occur when the moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit. This makes the moon look about 15% bigger than average and about 30% brighter! You will also hear that a Blue Moon happened at the same time too. But this just means that this was the 2nd full moon in a calendar month. Nothing special about that in particular, it happens on average once every couple of years. But all three of these happening at the same time that hadn t occurred since 1982 and won t happen again until 2033!
