1 INMET: SYNONYMOUS OF TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS IN THE BRAZILIAN METEOROLOGY AUGUSTO CESAR VAZ DE ATHAYDE Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET), Eixo Monumental Via S1 Cruzeiro, CEP Brasília, DF, Brazil Abstract The National Meteorological Institute (INMET), NHMS of Brazil, holder of the quality certification ISO 9001, is the meteorology leader of Latin America in this millenium beginning by high technology recently installed to improve weather forecast. In the last March, INMET opened High Performance Center for Meteorological Computation, with the two new and powerful supercomputers for the numerical modelling plans of Institute. In order of upgrade, there are other projects like automatization of surface observation network, meteorological database together with Navy, Air Force and Aneel (Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency), all operational organisms of meteorology in the country, with Brazil. 159

2 1. Introduction In the last 22 of March, as celebration of the World Meteorological Day, the National Meteorological Institute - INMET had the great honor to open, with Minister of Agriculture and Supply, Pratini de Moraes, the High Performance Center for Meteorological Computation - CCMAD in Portuguese, the major computation center on Numerical Weather Prediction of the Latin America. The Center was a memorable acquisition for the modernization of the Brazilian meteorology representing a technological achievement occurred at INMET in the last years. Two powers computers, Cray SV1 and Origin 2400, manufactured at USA, are operating and they are responsible for numerical modeling at INMET. The processing capacity of CCMAD is 32 Gygaflops. Currently the main product is the Brazilian High Resolution Model (MBAR in Portuguese), regional model for numerical weather forecasting which produces meteorological variables prognoses at a 25 km of grid, the highest resolution of the Latin America. So far, the performance has been assess within expected limits. With new supercomputers, INMET aims to run the current regional model on a more fine grid, seeking to obtain even more accuracy on its prognoses. Moreover, INMET is planning to run other numerical models, as well as to cooperate with others operational and research institutions. The High Performance Center for Meteorological Computation reached the efficiency operation, due to the competent staff of INMET, consisting of Meteorologists with 160

3 Ph.D, graduated in the United States and England, with expertise either in NWP or Applied Mathematics. The Center counts also with well prepared computer experts. CCMAD also comprises the Hydrometeorological Information System (S.I.M.), database created by INMET jointly with operational institutions of Brazilian meteorology such as the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation (DHN), of Navy, Diretoria de Eletrônica e Proteção ao Vôo (DEPV), of Air Force, Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (ANEEL), all of them, partners of INMET in achieving technological improvement. Having the opportunity of assessing the Europe experience in the automatization area, INMET has expanded its surface observational network, through a joint project with Finnish Meteorological Institute - FMI, the SONABRA Project. This project has started with 5 automatic stations, placed at Brasilia, Salvador, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre and Manaus. Although, the system has just begun INMET has acquired expertise to install more 50 automatic stations throughout Brazil, increasing the current database. This is INMET, holder of the quality certification ISO 9001, on national and international level, at the headquarters as well as at the 10 Districts and meteorological stations, showing total quality of the products and services offered to Brazilian citizens. The quality program involves all staff in a standardization procedure, based on training and calibration of equipments, essential requisite for ISO INMET, official organism of the meteorology in the country, has almost one century of experience within its 92 years of existence, providing weather forecast for the 161
