World Meteorological Organization Working together in weather, climate and water WMO CAS & CAeM Aviation Research and Demonstration Project Paris-CDG airport WMO

Paris-CDG airport Mid-latitude in Northern Hemisphere Location: inland North-East from Paris World airport classification : (ACI World) 4th - international passengers trafic 8th total passengers trafic Runways: 08L/26R 09L/27R 08R/26L 09R/27L

Impacting weather Convection : landing and take-off delays Wind : strong winds, gusts, wind shear One of the main parameters displayed on ATC screens Low ceilings and visibilities (fog, stratus) primary cause for airline delays (~40%), terminal disruption On-ground icing Snow Freezing precipitation

Nowcasting/NWP facilities AROME-France mesoscale regional model Coverage : French continental territory (incl. Corsica) non-hydrostatic 8 runs a day forecast ranges from +1h to +48h 1.3x1.3km grid Parameters : classical MET parameters + CAPE, cold precipitation, fog diagnosis, convection diagnosis, simulated radar reflectivity and IR, object-oriented nowcast of convection, etc.

Nowcasting/NWP facilities AROME-France

Nowcasting/NWP facilities AROME-PI local NWP model for nowcasting Coverage : same as AROME-France coupling model : AROME-France non-hydrostatic 1.3x1.3km grid 24 runs a day forecast ranges from +30min up to +180min (refresh. Rate 5min) + from +180min to +6h (r.r. 15min) Parameters : same as AROME-France model + industrial snow diagnostic forecast ranges

Nowcast at Meteo-France ANTIGEL

MET service at LFPG Human expertise-based nowcasting and forecasting meteorological service at CDG 1. Innovative solution set for CDG for common situational awareness 2. Built on outcomes of intensive and continuous users consultation process 3. Continuous training for users (ATM/ATC, airline staffs, airport management operators) 4. Strenght of this solution : Impact of weather on hub operations integrated Human expertise included, not a fully automatic solution Safety relevant solution Fine temporal resolution, high refresh rate (15 min or less)

MET service at LFPG - Through the solution, MF provides the latest science in nowcasting & forecasting techniques (convection, fog, snow ) - Progress for the inclusion of impact-related information - More and more probabilistic information - Most of the products are final user-tailored Opportunity for CDM at other French airports : current activities at MF for CDM@xxx websites for MET at other airports

MET service at LFPG Update 24 times/day or more Intensity, type of phenomenon + probabilistic information

MET service at LFPG WMO Weather forecast at the aerodrome : Forecast of Low Visibility Procedures conditions 11

MET service at LFPG LVP forecast is objectively verified and the reliability is measured : this is a user requirement - Statistical approach. Criteria for verification are : Actual LVP conditions when vis < 600m OR ceilings < 200ft during at least 1 min' in the considered time period. Hit = observed + forecast with one of the two highest levels of risk + non observed + forecast with one of the two lowest levels of risk

Paris-CDG airport MET service at LFPG WMO Forecast of Low Visibility Procedures conditions Hits vs. total Scores LVP bulletins and Statistics available on Fails False alarms (data from 07/2007 to 04/2009) Hits (fcst+obs) 13
