4 Technical Facts Research Platform Location Operator Commissioning Height Water depth Distance from coast Foundation Platform size Heli pad FINO 1 North Sea GL GH September m 28 m 45 km Jacket 16*16 m yes FINO 2 Baltic Sea GL GH May m 24 m 31 km Monopile 12.2*12.2m no FuE FINO 3 North Sea GmbH, FH August m 23 m 80 km Monopile 13*13 m yes Kiel redundant energy supply (up to 4 generators), l tank in monopile or container generators, operating-, measurement- and communication systems placed in weather proofed and air-conditioned containers data communication via satellite and radio link; online surveillance
5 GLGH assignments at FINO Coordination of construction, installation and commissioning of platform FINO 1 (2001 to 2003) Operational management, maintenance, coordination of ship and/or heli trips to the platform (FINO 1 since 2003, FINO 2 since 2010) Coordination of current and future research projects (FINO 1, FINO 2) Mast design, layout and operation of meteorological measuring program at FINO 3 (since 2006) GLGH
6 Objectives of the FINO Research Program The high level objectives of the three FINO platforms and of associated research are to gather information 1. on the offshore environment in order to better predict its impact on the planned offshore wind farms 2. on the possible influence of the new offshore technology on the maritime environment. Create knowledge to improve design, construction and operation of offshore wind farms. Olaf Robenek
7 Research at FINO Meteorology Wind speed and direction at different levels up to 100 m above see level, temperature, humidity, air pressure, global radiation, UV-A radiation, rain Oceanography Wave height, period and direction, current velocity and direction, sea level, water temperature, salinity, oxygen and pressure Further technical investigations Load impact on structure, acoustic measurement during ramming, registration of ship traffic Biological data Marine growth on the underwater structure, benthos and fishes, migratory behaviour of birds flight counts of bird Photo: AWI
