8 Ill THREAD GAGING AND DIMENSIONS A. Thread Gagng:- The Thread majr dameter, mnr dameter, ptch dameter, ncluded angle and thread lead f each stud and blt used n ths prgram were measured at three pnts alng the thread. An average f the three results fr each dm- ensn was used. Super Mcrmeter. The majr dameter was measured n a Pratt & Whtney- Tr-rll gages were used t measure the ptch dameter t an accuracy f nch. The ncluded angle, mnr dameter and lead were measured n a J & L Cmparatr t an accuracy f nch. The ptch dameter and mnr dameter f the nternal hles were measured wth a Bryant P-2 Thread Gage. Defrmatn f studs caused by varus amunts f nterference was determned usng a Scherr-Tumc ptcal cmparatr. Thread Dmensns:- Classes 2A and 3A UNC external threads and class 3B UNC tapped hles were n accrdance wth Handbk H28, Screw-Thread Standards fr Federal Servces. Handbk H28 (957) Part III (pages 48-52), prvdes dmensns fr external and nternal nterference ft (class 5) threads. These dmensns and ptch dameter lmts were based n the externally threaded members beng?teel ASTM A-325 (SAE grade 5) r better. In the absence f any ther dmensnal data, these dmensns n Handbk H28 were used when class 5 threads were requred fr the mnel and K-mnel studs used n ths prgram. NC5 HF threads were used fr mnel and K-mnel studs engaged n tapped -6-

NC5 IF threads were used fr tapped hles n HTS, HY80 plate and HY80 castng and NC5 INF threads were used fr tapped hles n mnel castngs. IV TEST PROCEDURE AND RESULTS Fr the sake f clarty and cntnuty, bth the test prcedure and test results are ncluded n ths sectn. Studs were engaged t the mnmum length f engagement as determned n Task I. A summary f these mnmum length f engagement data are ncluded n Appendx L Wth the stud engaged, a self-lckng nut was nstalled untl a length f tw thread ptches extended beynd the lckng devce f the nut. The break- away and back-ff trques fr remvng the nut were determned wthut any axal lad appled t the nut (as specfed n MIL-N-25027B, paragraph ). Self-lckng nuts frm bth Elastc Stp Nut Crpratn (ESNA) and Greer Stp Nut Cmpany were used n rder t cmpare trque data fr nuts suppled by dfferent surces. shwn n Table III. Cnsequently, the break-away and back-ff trques fr the -/8 nch nuts were btaned wth the nut end f the stud lubrcated wth "S-n-One" SAS 20 l. The nut end f the studs had UNC 2A threads. -7-

The test»et-up fr determnng these trques s shwn n Fgure, whch shws an HTS plate wth 7/8 nch tapped hles, a mnel stud, stud remver and trque wrench. Mnel and K-mnel studs wth classes 2A cut and rlled and 3A cut and rlled threads engaged n tapped hles wth class 3B threads caused n bservable permanent dstrtn f the external r nternal threads. The break-away and back-ut trques fr these 2A/3B and 3A/3B fts were lwer than the break-away trque fr remvng the self-lckng nuts. The break-away and back-ut trques fr /2, 7/8 and -/8 nch studs wth class 5 threads engaged n tapped hles wth class 3B and class 5 threads are tabulated n Table IV.
