COWBOY NOTES - RECORDS SET - Cowboy shortstop Jace Peterson set a school record for career stolen bases with 78 and relief pitcher Jordan LeGros set a single season record for saves with RECORD TIED - Outfielder Lee Orr tied a record by hitting 23 doubles this year...the record is held by Bryan Cartie (2005). - SLC LEADERS: heading into the conference tournament (statistics are counted for all games during the year), Peterson led the league in runs scored (67) and triples (8), Orr led in doubles (23) and LeGros led in saves (12) McNeese State wrapped up its 2011 baseball season with a won-lost record and a showing in the Southland Conference. The Cowboys did not make the league s post season tournament, dropping a three game series on the road to Nicholls in its last appearance. Four Cowboys were named to the all-southland Conference team, shortstop Jace Peterson and outfielder Lee Orr to the first unit and outfielder Seth Granger and relief pitcher Jordan LeGros to the second team. Third baseman Renny Weber was given an honorable mention. LeGros was also named the league s relief pitcher of the year. Granger, a junior from Iowa, led the Cowboys at the plate with a.372 batting average and he was also tops in hits (84) and in RBIs with 55. Weber ranked second with a.335 average while Peterson was third with a.335 mark, Orr was fourth at.322 and Nick Eubanks was fifth with a.309 average. Peterson also led the team in runs scored (67), triples (8) and stolen bases (30). Orr was tops in doubles (23), home runs (8), total bases (130) and slugging percentage (.544). In the pitching department, LeGros was 3-2 with a 2.27 ERA and he also saved a school record 12 games. He made 27 appearances and struckout 38 batters in 31.2 innings. Among the starting pitchers, Zach Butler was 5-4, Matt Click was 6-6 and Phil Parcell was 4-5. The Cowboys lose seven seniors and Peterson and Orr are expected to be drafted by the major league.

8 Terry Burrows had taken over the head role in Head Coach Terry Burrows, who played at McNeese State, has just completed his fourth season as head coach. The Cowboys compiled a won-lost record this past year and finished in the Southland Conference, not making the league s post season tournament. Prior to taking the McNeese head role, the 42 year old Burrows, who is a member of the McNeese State Hall of Fame, had previously served as head coach at St. Louis High in Lake Charles where he coached the team to its first district title in 10 years. Before that he had served as an assistant coach both at McNeese State and at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. At St. Louis he had seven players go on to sign college scholarships while at Louisiana-Monroe he helped develop a staff that had five pitchers selected in the major league draft. As an assistant coach at McNeese, Burrows helped a pitching staff that won a Southland Conference tournament and participated in the NCAA regional tournament. The left handed Burrows had an 11 year professional career, compiling a 4-4 won-lost record while recording two saves in the major leagues with Texas, Milwaukee and San Diego. He also played in Japan, Mexico and Venezuela. As a collegiate pitcher for the Cowboys, he was named the player of the year in the Southland Conference in 1990 when he posted a 10-3 won-lost record along with a 1.58 ERA. During a two year career at McNeese, Burrows won 15 games. He still holds the school record for most strikeouts in a nine inning game (19 vs Louisiana-Lafayette in 1990) and 15 strikeouts in a seven inning game (vs Louisiana College in 1989). Burrows was drafted by the Texas Rangers following his junior year. He holds a bachelor of science degree from McNeese and is married to the former Lynne Huddelston and the couple has a daughter Brittany and sons Nick and Elliott.
