UH opened the season with 10 straight losses and stumbled to a 1-15 start. The Rainbows were also marred by a series of major pitching injuries in the first season in the formidable Big West Conference. They finished seventh in the 10-team league with an conference record but won four of their final six games. Following the season, the Bows were shutout of any all-conference selections for the first time since 1998 and did not have any players selected in the MLB draft for the first time in 13 seasons. Seniors Pi ikea Kitamura (Oakland) and Corey MacDonald (Tampa Bay) did end up singing pro contracts though. Challenging Schedule - The Rainbows may have had a disappointing season but their schedule had a lot to do with it. Seven of UH s opponents made NCAA regional appearances, with three advancing to a super regional and UCLA winning the national championship. Three Big West teams qualified for the postseason with UC Irvine getting shut out despite a top 25 ranking for much of the season. Stumbling Out of the Gate - UH s 1-15 start was the worst in program history. The Bows were swept at home by Oregon and Rice to start the season, then went 1-3 at UNLV s Rebel Classic and were pummeled by UNLV, 14-1, in a single non-conference game to close the trip. The most discouraging loss along the way may have been the series opener against Rice. The Bows failed to score a single run in a 17-inning 2-0 loss and left 17 runners on base in the process. Injury Bug - The injury bug hit the Rainbow pitching staff hard this season, and in unprecedented fashion. The calamity started with potential ace Andrew Jones suffering a season ending injury after just one appearance. Two-year starter Jarrett Arakawa never threw a single pitch after trying to rehab a torn labrum and eventually having season ending surgery. On came freshman Quintin Torres-Costa who started two games before going down with a freak accident during batting practice, causing him to have Tommy John surgery. The surgery sidelined him for the rest of the season and most likely all of During this time Scott Squier moved into the Friday night starter spot but down the stretch was suspended for violating team rules. The ideal opening day rotation, in no particular order, would have featured the likes of Connor Little, Andrew Jones, Jarrett Arakawa, and possibly Torres-Costa and Corey MacDonald as the fourth starter. But as the Big West season rolled around the rotation was made up of Little, MacDonald, and Matt Cooper. Shut Out - Not one Rainbow was selected to the Big West all-conference team, as UH will have to wait another year to hopefully get its first all-league 2013 RAINBOW BASEBALL - PAGE 1 HAWAIIATHLETICS.COM

That marked the first time since 1998 (WAC) that UH failed to have any all-conference selections. Shortstop Austin Wobrock was a defensive player of the year hopeful but was left off. Undrafted - After a record seven Rainbows were drafted in 2011 and two more in 2012, but no players were taken in the 40-round 2013 MLB First Year Player Draft. That marked the first time in 13 years no UH players were drafted. Pi ikea Kitamura and Corey MacDonald did end up signing free agent contracts with the Oakland Athletics and Tampa Bay Rays, respectively. Keeping It Together - Senior hurler Corey MacDonald was arguably the team s MVP this season. In 2012 he pitched in just five games and started two. This year however, he was thrust into the starting rotation and finished the season 7-6, UH s only starter to have an above-.500 record. He posted a 4.08 ERA with 57 strikeouts. He didn t enter the season figuring to be the backbone of the Rainbow pitching staff, but that s exactly what he was. MacDonald finished just twothirds of an inning shy of 100 for the season which put him in the Big West s top 10. He pitched into the sixth inning in each of his 14 starts, and worked seven or more innings six times, eight or more four times, and has two complete games to his credit. Against then-no. 4 Cal State Fullerton he pitched eight strong innings while allowing three runs. He struck out a career-high eight batters against Long Beach State (May 11). PK Says Goodbye - Hometown favorite and four year starter Pi ikea Kitamura saw his Rainbow career come to a close this season. He played 225 games over his career all but two of them starts. He also reached three milestones this year, eclipsing the 200- hit, and 100-run and 100-RBI marks. He finished his career with 205 hits, 114 RBIs and 109 runs scored and was a member of two WAC titles and UH s NCAA Regional appearance in Walking Tall - Six of the Rainbow seniors graduated this spring but were unable to walk and instead received their diplomas in a special commencement ceremony after UH s home finale. Assistant Vice Chancellor Ronald Cambra awarded the diplomas. Corey MacDonald will be receiving his BA in sociology this fall and Connor Little, who graduated in 2012 with a degree in Communicology, will earn his second degree (psychology) after summer session. He started the season in the bullpen where he had four solid appearances over the first three weeks of the season. Over those four bullpen outings, he posted a 1.32 ERA which included six and one-thirds scoreless innings against Rice. He allowed just one hit and posted eight strikeouts. He was then permanently thrust into the starting rotation and in just his second start he pitched a completegame three-hit shutout for UH s first home win of the season (Gonzaga, Mar. 12). He had another scoreless outing the next week against Wichita State where he struck out a season-high 10 hitters. For the season he posted a team-high 3.14 ERA with a teamhigh 69 strikeouts and 86 innings pitched. Fans Roll In - Despite the difficult season, loyal Rainbow baseball fans continued to roll into Les Murakami Stadium in droves. The Bows finished 13th in the nation and first in the west region, averaging 3,357 fans per game and boasting a total attendance figure 97,355. Over the Rainbow - UH baseball played its last season as the Rainbows. Beginning with the sports season, all UH mens teams will be known as the Rainbow Warriors. The baseball team was one of two UH sports (sailing) who were previously known simply as the Rainbows RAINBOW BASEBALL - PAGE 3 HAWAIIATHLETICS.COM

5 MIKE TRAPASSO 35 Head Coach 12th Season Oklahoma State (1987) Mike Trapasso completed his 12th season as the head coach of the University of Hawai i baseball program. After 11 seasons of guiding his team through the Western Athletic Conference, he made the transitions this year to the program s new home in the Big West Conference. He has led his teams to winning records in eight of the last nine seasons, and has guided his teams to 30 or more wins in eight of his seasons. Trapasso is overall at Hawai i saw Coach Trapasso guide the Rainbows to their fourth straight 30-win season on their final WAC campaign. In 2011, Coach Trapasso was named WAC Coach of the Year for the third time, as UH was named Co-Regular Season Champions for the first time since 1992 and earned the No. 1 seed in the WAC Tournament. The Rainbows advanced to the championship before falling to Fresno State, finishing the season with an overall record of The 2010 season saw the Bows advance to the NCAA West Regional in Tempe, Arizona for the first time since The team won its first WAC Tournament Championship since 1992 before falling to top-ranked Arizona State in the regional championship. UH finished ranked #30 in the final Collegiate Baseball Top 30 Poll. In 2009, the team started the season with one of the nation s toughest nonconference schedules, helping the team peak at No. 20 in the Baseball America poll, while posting an RPI in the top 10. Hawai i broke the single-season school home run record with 64 team homers, while Kolten Wong earned freshman all-america honors by five different publications. In 2006, Trapasso guided the team to a record, going to its first NCAA Regional in 13 years. The team advanced to the regional final before falling to eventual national champion Oregon State. He pushed the team to a second-place finish in the WAC, losing the regular-season title by just a half a game. He also guided UH to a 16-5 record on the road, posting the most road wins in UH history and the third-highest winning percentage. And Trapasso got his share of recognition for the great season. He was named National Coach of the Year by the National Baseball Foundation and was a finalist for the College Baseball Insider National Coach of the Year award. He also earned his second WAC Coach of the Year honor in the past three seasons. The 2006 season was the breakthrough season Trapasso was looking for, but success didn t come overnight. After a challenging first season in 2002 while adjusting to his new surroundings coaching an inherited team, the St. Louis, Mo., native posted five straight winning seasons. In 2004, Trapasso was named the WAC Coach of the Year after guiding UH to its second straight 30-win season that included a big series win over No. 3 Rice. Following that successful season, he joined Team USA that summer as an assistant coach. He accompanied the team all over the world, helping them to win the gold medal at the World University Baseball Games in Tainan, Taiwan. In 2003, the Oklahoma State graduate guided Hawai i to the program s biggest turnaround to date, winning 14 more games than in The 2003 season is now the second-largest turnaround in school history as the 2006 team won 17 more games than they did the year before. Trapasso became just the second full-time Division I head baseball coach at Hawai i in 2001 after a successful seven-year run as an assistant coach at Georgia Tech. While with the Yellow Jackets, he became known as the top collegiate baseball assistant/recruiter in the country, as noted by Baseball America in January During his seven years at Georgia Tech, Trapasso was responsible for assembling some of the top recruiting classes in the nation. His classes were ranked fourth, 18th, seventh, first, 14th, 11th and 12th by Collegiate Baseball. Four players in his 1999 recruiting class were ranked among the nation s top 50 prep players by Baseball America, which touted the Yellow Jackets class as best of the draft era. In his first year there, he built a pitching staff virtually from the ground up, tutoring a freshman-dominated staff that earned 25 of Tech s 38 wins and helped to develop them into a unit that won 46 games in 1997, giving the Jackets their first of two ACC titles while he was there. The southpaw enjoyed a great collegiate career at Oklahoma State as one of the top pitchers from He was very instrumental in taking OSU to the College World Series in 1984 and 85. In 1984, Trapasso was the winning pitcher in the CWS opening game versus Maine, outdueling former major leaguer Billy Swift. The former Cowboy also led the Big Eight and was ranked fifth in the country with a 1.42 ERA in Trapasso was selected four times in the Major League Baseball Draft after graduating from Mehlville High School between 1982 and 85, before signing with the Braves after his final year of college. He is married to the former Catherine Grieshaber of Festus, Mo., and they have two sons, Michel and Matthew. Michel finished his second season as team manager for the Bows.
