In the season opener, the Mavs hosted unanimous No. 1 TCU in front of a program record 2,008 fans. UTA s second largest crowd is a 1,939 gate during a win over No. 23 Texas A&M and when the Mavs hosted No. 3 TCU on April 4, 1,187 attended the fifth-largest crowd in program annals. JAMES MOVING UP RECORD BOOKS Junior righty Daniel James has carved out a decorated career in three seasons in Arlington. The Lubbock, Texas, native has 10 saves a Sun Belt high in 2017, ranking third in UTA single-season history. James needs two saves to tie Mike Snapp (2004) for second and four to equal the program record, held by Jason Watkins (1992). His 13 career saves checks in fifth-best in UTA career history. He needs three more to tie David Sobczak ( ) for fourth. TAKING IT FOR THE TEAM A key to any successful college baseball lineup is an ability to own the inside part of the plate and take free passes whenever possible. UTA has been hit by 45 pitches to rank third in the Sun Belt Conference, with junior RJ Williams owning 23 career HBP, ranking in the UTA record book. ROHRBAUGH STREAKING UTA senior outfielder/infielder Quintin Rohrbaugh has reached base safely in 33 straight games, a careerlong and team-high streak for the 2016 All-Sun Belt Conference selection. WINS OVER RANKED TEAMS UTA has wins over ranked opponents in three consecutive seasons. The Mavs own a 2-3 record vs. ranked foes in 2017, including wins over No. 4 Texas Tech and No. 23 Texas A&M. The school record for wins over top-10 opponents in a single season is four in WEEKEND ROTATION SHINES The undisputed strength of the 2017 UTA club is the consistency of its weekend rotation. With senior righty Kadon Simmons on Friday, a year after leading the Sun Belt in wins, junior right-hander Trae Patterson on Saturday, and junior southpaw Jakob Hernandez on Sunday, UTA has a group of talented arms. Overall, UTA s weekend staff is 14-5 with a 3.14 ERA in 30 starts, working 192 innings combined, allowing only 56 walks and striking out 147. BALANCED BULLPEN UTA has built a deep, balanced bullpen during the 2017 season. The bullpen sports a Sun Belt leading 15 saves, with a 8-8 record and a 4.13 ERA. UTA s relief unit has inherited 96 runners, allowing only 31 to score. Adam Meyer, Jake Wilcox, Ryan Buss and Brad Vassar give UTA options from the left side. Daniel James, Austin Gardner and Dylan Schneider have been high-valued right-handed relievers. DEFENSIVE IMPROVEMENT UTA s defense started slowly, with a.959 fielding percentage through the first 20 games of the season, turning 20 double plays but committing 32 errors. Over the last 20 games, the Mavs have fielded.981, with 20 double plays and just 15 errors. MARCH, APRIL SEE MAVS SHINE The Mavs have rolled through its schedule in March and April, owning a record over the last two months. UTA s run has coincided with the return from injuries of UTA primary late-inning reliever Daniel James who leads the Sun Belt in saves and infield/outfield slugger Christian Hollie. EASTON JOHNSON FIGHTS WAY INTO THE LINEUP After a redshirt season in 2016 after transferring in from North Lake CC, infielder Easton Johnson wasn t someone outsiders expected to be a vital part of the 2017 lineup. During his redshirt season, Johnson did a little bit of everything defensively, including learning how to serve as an emergency catcher. Then 2017 happened and Johnson showed the kind of gamer mentality, with a hard-nosed quality of play, that forced 2017 RECORD WHEN... 7 his way into the lineup. Defensively, Johnson leads all Sun Belt second baseman in assists, and has started 36 of UTA s 40 games. PATTERSON: FROM INFIELDER AT KANSAS STATE TO WEEKEND ACE AT UTA Junior Saturday starter Trae Patterson took a lengthy route to UTA. He started his career at North Central Texas CC as a two-way player, serving primary as an infielder. Kansas State signed Patterson to serve as a two-way talent for the Wildcats, before injury ended his career at KSU. He revitalized his career as a strictly pitcher at Cisco CC, starting out as a closer while he returned from injury, before serving as a starter, catching the eye of the UTA staff, which quickly added the talented righty to its weekend staff for Patterson has shined, including working nine consecutive shutout innings last week, allowing only four singles as the Mavs went 4-0. SALINAS PROVIDES MIDDLE OF THE ORDER PUNCH Junior slugger Omar Salinas, a lefty swinger, has provided some much-needed offensive punch in the 2017 lineup. The Arlington High School product who broke Hunter Pence s record at Arlington High leads the team in homers (seven) and RBI (33), also leading the club in walks (25). He has a pair of two-homer games in conference play. INJURY CHANGES INFIELD PLANS UTA s top draft prospect according to D1baseball in the 2017 preseason is sophomore shortstop Josh Minjarez. Minjarez opened the season strong after missing the fall due to a minor back injury. He hit.273 through his first 16 games with three doubles and seven RBI, before hitting the first-base bag wrong in UTA s win over No. 4 Texas Tech at Globe Life Ballpark, ending his season and putting him on the shelf for 4-6 months. WHAT S THE OFFENSE ABOUT? UTA s offense was built by coach Darin Thomas and recruiting coordinator Fuller Smith. The duo have helped the Mavs lead the Sun Belt Conference in fewest strikeouts with an emphasis in executing in key situations and two outs and hitting the ball in the gaps. Left-handed hitters Omar Salinas, Noah Vaughan and Will Olson provide some thump, with right-handed veteran bats Quintin Rohrbaugh, Christian Hollie, Easton Johnson, RJ Williams and Brady Cox balancing the lineup. VAUGHAN SHOWCASING SKILLS Sophomore outfielder Noah Vaughan has showcased glimpse of collegiate five-tool potential during his first two season. A 6-foot-3, 185-pound left-handed hitter, Vaughan has belted six homers in 2017 to show power, including six doubles and two triples. He leads the team with eight steals and defensively he s made starts at all three outfield posts and first base. Vaughan has three outfield assists and has hit.252, including a.286 mark in Sun Belt play after a sluggish start to the non-conference schedule. MIDWEEK STARTER INJURIED, MAVS MIX & MATCH ON TUESDAYS A big blow to the 2017 season was the injury to junior righty Reid Petty, who was carving out his role as UTA s Tuesday starter. Petty is out for the season after injury, forcing the Mavs to piece together midweek starters, with UTA struggling against a rugged midweek schedule. Adam Meyer, Austin Gardner, Jake Wilcox, Jordon West and Matt Michalski have each made midweek starts in his stead. OLSON, COX FORM QUALITY CATCHING DEPTH Last year, Will Olson missed the season due to injury. His injury forced UTA to catch Brady Cox in 57 of UTA s 58 games, a rugged toll on a hitter that earned first-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors with a.365 average. Cox earned a spot as a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award in 2016, and is on the 2017 watch list for the award, but a big piece of UTA s success has been the return to health in 2017 for Olson. Olson has allowed Cox to slide to third base, strengthening the defense and allowing the Mavs to get both the veteran bats in the lineup. 8 BRADY COX CANDIDATE FOR THE SENIOR CLASS AWARD UTA catcher/infielder Brady Cox has been named one of 30 candidates for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award. A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Cox is a model student-athlete in the UTA program. He is on the preseason watch list for the Johnny Bench Award, given annually to the nation s top catcher, after he was a semifinalist for the honor in As a senior in 2017, Cox has hit.267 with four doubles, seven RBI and a.370 on-base percentage. During his junior season, Cox ranked third in the Sun Belt in average (.365) and hits (81), ranking fourth in on-base percentage (.427). Cox is one of two Sun Belt Conference student-athletes on the listing, joining Coastal Carolina hurler Andrew Beckwith. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C s of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2017 College World Series in June. THOMAS IN 10TH YEAR AT HELM UTA head coach Darin Thomas is in his 10th season at the helm of the Mavs. After a eason in 2016, Thomas led the Mavs to their fifth 30 win season in his previous nine years. Thomas has coached UTA to 13 wins over top-10 teams in his career, including wins over No. 7 Oklaoma State and No. 5 TCU in UTA has seen 10 players advance to the big leagues, including seven coached by Thomas. Overall, he has coached 56 all-conference performers, 27 all-tournament team selections and three conference players of the year. Off the field, Thomas has helped guide the program to unprecedented success in the classroom, including a program best 3.18 team GPA in the fall of ELITE COACHING STAFF In addition to veteran UTA skipper Darin Thomas, the Mavs boast a veteran, respected coaching staff. Pitching coach Jon Wente came to the Mavs after a career as one of the top junior college head coaches in Arizona, including serving as the longtime head coach at Central Arizona, a JUCO powerhouse, with his wife serving as the softball head coach. UTA recruiting coordinator and hitting coach Fuller Smith was a decorated slugger at Ole Miss during his playing career and has been a two-time member of the Thomas coaching staff, sandwiching a stop at his alma mater under legendary skipper Mike Bianco. Volunteer assistant coach Joel Bocchi is a former Arizona State standout, along with Wente, serving as a catcher with the Sun Devils. Graduate assistants Eric Schenck-Joblinske, who completed his playing career at Iowa in 2016, and former UTA star Jaob Moreland bolster the staff. INJURY REPORT The Mavs opened the season without their starting second baseman, Christian Hollie, who suffered an injury in preseason practice. Quintin Rohrbaugh, Easton Johnson and Zac Cook filled Hollie s role up the middle in the early schedule. Junior reliever Daniel James, penciled in to be UTA s closer in 2017, was also out after having surgery in the winter, and returned to earn Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week honors in his debut week, allowing no runs over 7.2 innings in three outings. Shortstop starter Josh Minjarez suffered a season-ending injury in the win over No. 4 Texas Tech at Globe Life Ballpark, with Cook and RJ Williams starting each of the games in his stead. In addition, midweek starter, Reid Petty is out for the season after suffering an injury, with the Mavs using Jordon West, Matt Michalski and Austin Gardner in place of Petty in midweek starts. TOUGH SCHEDULE The Mavs play 16 opponents - of its 56 game schedule - that are ranked in the top-25. UTA will host preseason No. 1 TCU twice, while also hosting Louisiana and defending NCAA Champion Coastal Carolina in weekend tests. UTA will also travel to face Dallas Baptist, Texas and Oklahoma, and own a neutral-site win over No. 4 Texas Tech. COX BACK FOR SENIOR YEAR Catcher Brady Cox had a historic 2016 season as UTA s everyday backstop. Cox made 55 of UTA s 58 starts behind the plate, a challenging physical tole as the Mavs lacked a backup catcher, using reliever Dylan Schneider to spell Cox. Cox still hit good enough to lead the team and rank third in the confernece - while earning first-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors. Cox was also a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award, given annually to the nation s top catcher. OLSON RETURNS TO HEALTH A big addition to the UTA roster in 2017 came in the form of sophomore catcher/infielder Will Olson, who missed the 2016 season due to injury. Olson, who served as a back-up catcher in 2015 as a freshman, made UTA s opening-day start behind the plate, allowing Brady Cox to slide to first base. Olson, who also plays third base, will give UTA a left-handed bat in a right-handed dominant lineup and allos the Mavs to spell Cox behind the plate.

9 CANADIAN IMPORT One of the largest recruits for UTA in the offseason was junior outfielder Phil Berthiaume, a native of Quebec City, Canada. Berthiaume earned the opening-day start in rightfield and as the leadoff hitter for the Mavs. He is a member of the preseason All-Canadian College Team, announced by the Canadian Baseball Network. In 2016 at Seminole State CC, he hit.385 with 10 homers and 15 doubles. DEFENSIVE VERSATILITY A hallmark of UTA head coach Darin Thomas is to build a lineup of versatile defenders who can play all over the diamond. In the preseason, Thomas rotates the Mavs all over the field in an effor to produce well-rounded defenders who can help his lineup. UTA catcher Brady Cox and Will Olson each play third base, with infielders RJ Williams, Christian Hollie and Quintin Rohrbaugh also making starts in the outfield. MID-YEAR TRANSFERS UTA welcomed two mid-year transfers in 2017, including former TCU lefty Drew Gooch and Alabama switch-hitting outfielder Ty Sawka.
