Streak: UCA W 1 LEADING OFF: The Arkansas State baseball team is set for an in-state clash with nonconference foe Central Arkansas Tuesday night in Conway, Ark., at Bear Stadium. The Red Wolves enter the game with an overall record of after losing two out of three games at Kansas State this past weekend. UCA enters the game with an overall mark of 23-18, but was most recently swept on the road at the University of Incarnate Word in a Southland Conference series. A-State lost both meetings that season by scores of 4-3 and 8-2 and lost the first meeting in 1949 by a count of 6-0 before picking up its first win of the series in the second game that season by a final of 8-6. The two schools have only played four times since UCA made the jump to division I in the 2007 season. They have split the four meetings with the first two occurring in 2007 with UCA taking the first contest in Conway 14-5 before A-State won 4-2 in Jonesboro later in the season. The two teams had a game scheduled in 2013, but it was rained out. Head coach Tommy Raffo is 1-1 against Central Arkansas in his career after the two teams split two meetings a season ago. A-State won the first contest in Tomlinson Stadium 3-0 before UCA came back to defeat the Red Wolves 4-3 in Conway a couple of weeks later. In the Arkansas State victory both teams had just five hits each, but Bryan Ayers tossed six innings of shutout baseball to earn his first career win and struck out eight while only walking three. Eric Wilcoxson had a pair of hits and drove in two runs. In the 4-3 loss, A-State took a 3-1 lead into the seventh inning, but allowed UCA to tie it up 3-3 in the bottom of the inning. The Bears ended up winning walk-off fashion as Brandon Montalvo singled home Scott Zimmer. Chandler Hawkins struck out 10 in five innings for A-State and Wilcoxson and Austin Baker had two hits apiece. The two schools were supposed to play back on April 14 in Jonesboro, but heavy rain the day before caused the meeting to be cancelled. 62 AND COUNTING Zach George has a 62-game on-base streak entering the nonconference contest against Central Arkansas on Tuesday night. He was held hitless in Friday night s game against K-State, but was hit by a pitch twice to extend the streak. He had one hit Saturday night and drove in a seasonhigh three runs with two coming on the double that hit the right-field fence. He concluded the series against Kansas State with a three-hit effort in Sunday s series finale. The streak also spans three years and includes George having his past two playing years interrupted by season-ending injuries. The streak began in 2013 with George reaching base in all nine games he played in before reaching base in all 10 games he played in the 2014 season. He s now reached base in all 43 games he s played this season. It is the longest streak among NCAA Division I baseball players and records indicate it is the longest streak in school history. Giovanni Garcia and Jordan Castaldo each had 38 game on base streaks during the 2010 season for Arkansas State, while Appalachian State s Michael Pierson had an on-base streak of 43 games come to an end on March 8. EXTRA BASE HITS A-State is second in the Sun Belt Conference and 38th in the nation with 92 doubles and only trails ULM s 97 in the SBC. The team also has a 2.04 doubles per game mark that ranks first in the conference and 35th in the nation. A-State had seven doubles on the weekend against Kansas State, including four in the series finale on Sunday. Matt Burgess and Zach George lead the team 16 each. Those marks are tied for third in the conference and rank 62nd in the nation. Austin Baker is third on the squad with 12, while Stuart Levy got to double digits with 11 after two against Kansas State over the weekend. Tanner Ring is next in line with nine. Ty White and Collin Massanelli were the only players to have hit a triple coming into the weekend s action, but Joe Schrimpf joined the club as he hit a triple in the second game of the three-game set against Appalachian State. White and Massanelli both have two on the season, while Schrimpf s improved to the team s total to five. Austin Baker leads the team with six home runs after he hit two against Kansas State. He hit

The first homer was a solo shot, while Sunday s was a two-run blast. Joe Schrimpf and Tanner Ring joined the party Friday night with two-run homers in the seventh inning that turned a 5-3 deficit into a 7-5 lead against K-State. Schrimpf s was a monster shot that cleared the top of a tree beyond the left-field fence, while Ring s was also a huge blast as it stayed just fair as it hit about three-fourths of the way up another tree beyond the left-field fence. Lucas Feddersen also hit his first career home run during Saturday s game. A-State hit five home runs against Kansas State after the Wildcats came into the series with only six homers all season, even though K-State did hit two in the series against the Red Wolves to get to eight for the season. The Red Wolves had nine hits against Memphis on April 28, but all nine hits were singles. The only other two times A-State failed to register an extra base hit were on Feb. 24 against Ole Miss and April 5 against South Alabama. BY GEORGE, HE S GOOD! Arkansas State redshirt senior first baseman Zach George is having a fantastic season at the plate for the Red Wolves. He had his last two seasons cut short by knee injuries early in the season, but hasn t needed any additional time to reacclimate himself with the game. He s played in 43 of the team s 45 games and leads the Red Wolves with a.381 batting average, which ranks first in the conference and 24th in the nation. George also leads the team and Sun Belt Conference with a.522 on-base percentage. That mark is also the third best in the country. George is tops on the team with a.500 slugging percentage and leads the team with 34 walks, which is third in the SBC and 44th in the nation. He s also the only regular starter on the squad to have more walks (34) than strikeouts (22). Additionally, he is tied for first on the team in hit-by-pitches with 14, which ranks in a tie for second in the SBC and 27th nationally. He leads the team with 61 hits and second in total bases with 80. He s also scored 25 runs, knocked in 22, is 7-of-11 stealing bases, has 16 doubles, and has hit one home run on the season. In his A-State career he is a.313 hitter with 38 doubles, three triples, nine home runs, and 95 RBIs. He s also walked 125 times in his career to just 78 strikeouts. FIRST SBC SERIES WIN, BUT ESPN3 NOT SO NICE The Red Wolves won their first conference series of the season by taking two out of three from Appalachian State over the weekend. A-State won the first game 6-1 before losing the second game 6-3 on an ESPN3 broadcast game, but was able to win the series with a walk-off win in Sunday s finale 7-6. Tim Seldomridge scored the game s winning run on a wild pitch after Appalachian State chose to intentionally walk Ty Michelotti with a 3-0 count. The series win against the Mountaineers was the fourth of the season overall for the Red Wolves. A-State has won three of its four nonconference series after losing two of three to Kansas State. A-State took two out of three games from Illinois State and No. 7 Louisville to open the season before securing its only series sweep of the year so far against Houston Baptist Feb Despite not winning a conference series until last weekend, the Red Wolves have only been swept once in a three-game set, which was at Troy April However, A-State hasn t been too thrilled to play on ESPN3 contests this season. The Red Wolves are now 0-3 in televised games after losing to Appalachian State 6-3 in Saturday s nightcap on the network. A-State lost to No. 14 Ole Miss 2-1 in its first televised game of the season on Feb. 24 and also lost an ESPN3 contest to Louisiana-Lafayette on March 28 by a score of 9-6. The Red Wolves did finally win a TV game when A-State defeated Kansas State 11-6 Friday night as the game was televised by Fox College Sports-Pacific. However, the final two games of the series were also on TV with Saturday s contest on Fox College Sports-Central and Sunday s finale on FCS-Pacific again, and A-State dropped both of those contests. Arkansas State lost 16-5 Saturday to K-State before falling 12-6 Sunday. The Red Wolves are now 1-5 overall in

OWEN S COMPLETE GAME GEM Junior starter David Owen tossed A-State s first complete game of the season in the first game of Saturday s doubleheader against Appalachian State as the Red Wolves won 6-1. Owen only allowed one unearned run on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts. The complete game was the first of Owen s career and marked the first time A-State had a complete game since Chandler Hawkins blanked Troy in a seven-inning run-rule game in last year s Sun Belt Conference Tournament that the Red Wolves won It was the first nine inning complete game since Daniel Wright tossed one against UALR on May 16, He allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts. NATIONAL AND CONFERENCE RANKINGS The A-State pitching staff is second in the SBC with a 7.7 strikeouts per nine innings mark, which also ranks 82nd in the country. David Owen is seventh in the conference with 61 strikeouts. He is also tied for second in the SBC with 20 batters struck out looking. The Red Wolves are 5th in the nation in hit-by-pitches with 77 and lead the Sun Belt Conference in the category. Backstop Stuart Levy and first baseman Zach George are tied for the team lead with 14 each, which is tied for second most in the conference and 27th in the country. The Red Wolves were hit nine times over the weekend by Kansas State. Arkansas State ranks 13th in the nation in sacrifice bunts with 51, also good for first in the SBC. Joe Schrimpf leads the team with 11 sacrifice bunts, a mark that is first in the conference and 26th nationally. Additionally, the team has 19 sacrifice flies, good for fourth in the conference and 100th in the nation. Matt Burgess has 6 SF s, which places him first in the SBC and 17th nationally. LEVY LEAVING THE YARD A-State senior backstop Stuart Levy had an impressive day at the plate April 18 against ULM. He hit a two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning to left field with two outs off ULM reliever Josh Leone to give A-State a 6-3 lead. The homer was his first of the season, but he wasn t done yet as he hit another two-out homer in the top of the ninth inning with the bases loaded. Levy s homers were the first time this season that Arkansas State has had a player with multiple homers in the same contest and was the first time since Austin Baker hit three out against Murray State on March 11, The grand slam was also the team s third one of the season after only hitting one all of last year. The two home runs were Levy s sixth and seventh ones of his career. PITCHING STAFF SETS RECORD The Arkansas State pitching trio of Tyler Zuber, Coulton Lee, and Colton Kibler set a new record with 21 strikeouts in the 13-inning 3-1 win over Georgia Southern on March 20. Zuber, making his first Friday night start of his career, registered the first 11 outs of the game on strikeouts before striking out two more before exiting the game in the seventh inning. Lee entered and picked up three more strikeouts in 1.1 innings before Kibler finished the game with five K s in 4.2 innings. The 21 strikeouts broke the previous record of 19 set in the 2013 season-opening 10-5 win over Bradley. Before that the previous record had been 18 against Memphis in 1995 and Kansas State in WEATHERING THE STORM This season the Red Wolves have had 22 games altered in some form or fashion thanks to the weather. A-State had to cancel the final game of its scheduled four-game set with Illinois State before cancelling a trip to Northwestern State to play the Demons and Creighton Feb. 21 and instead opting to play No. 7 Louisville in Emerson, Ga. Midweek games against SEMO, Ole Miss, and Southern Illinois have all been pushed back at least once. A-State picked up the midweek contest with Tennessee April 1 due to other cancellations, but that game was delayed due to lightning in the area before first pitch. A-State had to rescheduled its first home SBC series of the season March 6-8 for March 7 and 8 and had to change the venue to Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson, Miss. The Red Wolves have played seven doubleheaders this season, including six on six straight weekends to open the season. The team had to play a Saturday doubleheader against Troy after rain moved back Friday s scheduled game and then Sunday s game was also moved up an hour to beat inclement weather later in the day. A-State also experienced two lightning delays in April 8 s 10-8 win over the Salukis of Southern Illinois. A-State had to cancel its midweek contest with UCA on April 14 due to inclement weather. The Red Wolves most recent schedule change occurred on Friday, April 24 when A-State had to push the first game of its series with Appalachian State back to a Saturday doubleheader with a 1:00 start time for the game.
