A-State lost both meetings that season by scores of 4-3 and 8-2 and lost the first meeting in 1949 by a count of 6-0 before picking up its first win of the series in the second game that season by a final of 8-6. The two schools have only played four times since UCA made the jump to division I in the 2007 season. They have split the four meetings with the first two occurring in 2007 with UCA taking the first contest in Conway 14-5 before A-State won 4-2 in Jonesboro later in the season. The two teams had a game scheduled in 2013, but it was rained out. Head coach Tommy Raffo is 1-1 against Central Arkansas in his career after the two teams split two meetings a season ago. A-State won the first contest in Tomlinson Stadium 3-0 before UCA came back to defeat the Red Wolves 4-3 in Conway a couple of weeks later. In the Arkansas State victory both teams had just five hits each, but Bryan Ayers tossed six innings of shutout baseball to earn his first career win and struck out eight while only walking three. Eric Wilcoxson had a pair of hits and drove in two runs. In the 4-3 loss, A-State took a 3-1 lead into the seventh inning, but allowed UCA to tie it up 3-3 in the bottom of the inning. The Bears ended up winning walk-off fashion as Brandon Montalvo singled home Scott Zimmer. Chandler Hawkins struck out 10 in five innings for A-State and Wilcoxson and Austin Baker had two hits apiece. 51 AND COUNTING Zach George has a 51-game on-base streak entering the midweek contest against Central Arkansas after reaching base in all three games against Troy over the past weekend. He had three hits against SIU in a midweek contest, but only walked once in the first game of Saturday s doubleheader against the Trojans to push the streak to 49. He walked twice in the second game Saturday before getting three hits in Sunday s series finale to push the streak to 51 games. The streak also spans three years and includes George having his past two playing years interrupted by season-ending injuries. The streak began in It is the longest streak among NCAA Division-I baseball players and records indicate it is the longest streak in school history. Giovanni Garcia and Jordan Castaldo each had 38 game on base streaks during the 2010 season. Appalachian State s Michael Pierson had an on-base streak of 43 games come to an end on March 8. EXTRA BASE HITS A-State is second in the Sun Belt Conference and 35th in the nation with 71 doubles and only trails ULM s 76 in the SBC. The team also has a 2.09 doubles per game mark that ranks second in the conference and 39th in the nation. Matt Burgess leads the team with 13 doubles, which ranks second in the conference, trailing UALR s Ryan Scott s 15. Zach George is the only other Red Wolves player in double digits with 10, which ranks in a tie for seventh in the SBC. Stuart Levy and Austin Baker are tied for third on the team with nine doubles apiece. Ty White and Collin Massanelli are the only two players for A-State to hit a triple so far this season and both players have two each to lead the team. The Red Wolves have hit 15 home runs so far this season and three players account for nine of them. Austin Baker, Matt Burgess, and Tanner Ring all lead the team with three each with Ring hitting a two-run homer in the top of the ninth at Troy over the weekend for the team s latest. He had his last two seasons cut short by knee injuries early in the season, but hasn t needed any additional time to reacclimate himself with the game. He s played in 32 of the team s 34 games and leads the Red Wolves with a.385 batting average, which ranks second in the conference and 46th in the nation. George also leads the team and Sun Belt Conference with a.526 on-base percentage. That mark is also 3rd in the country. George is tops on the team with a.496 slugging percentage and leads the team with 26 walks, which is second in the SBC and 48th in the nation. He s also the only regular starter on the squad to have more walks (26) than strikeouts (16). Additionally, he is second on the team in hit-by-pitches with 10, which ranks third in the SBC and 44th nationally. He leads the team with 45 hits and is second with 58 total bases. He s also scored 20 runs, knocked in 13, is 4-of-7 stealing bases, has 10 doubles, and has hit one home run on the season. GRANTHAM IN A GROOVE A-State junior right-hander Adam Grantham had to make another emergency start in the first game of Saturday s doubleheader against Troy in place of Tyler Zuber and didn t disappoint. He fired six innings and allowed two runs (both earned) on just two hits. He did walk five batters, but tied his career high with eight strikeouts. He now has a 3.68 ERA for the season after having a 7+ mark earlier in the season. He has 14 walks and 26 strikeouts for the year. He entered the game in the bottom of the sixth inning in a bases-loaded, no-out jam and gave up one run on a wild pitch, but struck out the side to limit the damage. He struck out the first seven batters he faced and went four total innings allowing two runs (both earned) on two hits with a career-high eight strikeouts and four walks. Junior pitcher Adam Grantham made his first two starts of the season against Georgia Southern on March 21 in the second game of a doubleheader and against SEMO March 25. The right-hander had to make an emergency start against Georgia Southern when Jon Glidewell couldn t pitch and was rather impressive as he threw a then career-high 4.2 innings. He only allowed one run on four hits with six strikeouts against only one walk. CLOSING OUT THE LATE INNINGS A-State is a perfect 13-0 in games in which it has led after eight innings this season. Additionally the Red Wolves are 12-3 when leading after seven innings and 13-4 when leading after six innings. Consequently, A-State has failed to record a win when trailing from the seventh, eighth or ninth innings after losing three close games to Troy last weekend by scores of 2-1, 4-2, and 6-5. TWICE AS NICE The Arkansas State offense exploded for 12 runs against Southeast Missouri March 31 and in the process sent nine hitters to the plate in back-to-back innings during the fourth and fifth frames. Tanner Ring led off both innings and grounded out to second in the fourth before a walk in the fifth. Matt Burgess ended both innings with a pop out to shortstop and a groundout to the pitcher, but A-State scored four runs in both of the frames. PITCHING STAFF SETS RECORD The Arkansas State pitching trio of Tyler Zuber, Coulton Lee, and Colton Kibler set a new record with 21 strikeouts in the 13-inning 3-1 win over Georgia Southern on March 20. Zuber, making his first Friday night start of his career, registered the first 11 outs of the game on strikeouts before striking out two more before exiting the game in the seventh inning. Lee entered and picked up three more strikeouts in 1.1 innings before Kibler finished the game with five K s in 4.2 innings. The 21 strikeouts broke the previous record of 19 set in the 2013 season-opening 10-5 win over Bradley. The Red Wolves are third in the conference in strike out-to-walk ratio with a mark of 2.08, which ranks 110th nationally. They are also third in the SBC in WHIP (walks and hits allowed per innings pitched) with a mark of 1.35, also good for 87th in the nation. The Red Wolves are 11th in the nation in hit-by-pitches with 50 and lead the Sun Belt Conference in the category. Backstop Stuart Levy and infielder Zach George lead the conference with nine HBP s each, marks that also rank 47th in the nation. WEATHERING THE STORM This season the Red Wolves have had 20 games altered in some form or fashion thanks to the weather. A-State had to cancel the final game of its scheduled four-game set with Illinois State before cancelling a trip to Northwestern State to play the Demons and Creighton Feb. 21 and instead opting to play No. 7 Louisville in Emerson, Ga. Midweek games against SEMO, Ole Miss, and Southern Illinois have all been pushed back at least once. A-State picked the midweek contest with Tennessee April 1 due to other cancellations, but that game was delayed due to lightning in the area back on Wednesday. A-State had to rescheduled its first home SBC series of the season March 6-8 for March 7 and 8 and had to change the venue to Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson, Miss. The Red Wolves have played seven doubleheaders this season, including six on six straight weekends to open the season. The team had to play a Saturday doubleheader against Troy after rain moved back Friday s scheduled game and then Sunday s game was also moved up an hour to beat inclement weather later in the day. A-State also experienced two lightning delays in Wednesday s 10-8 win over the Salukis of Southern Illinois. MASSANELLI S BIG DAY Senior outfielder Collin Massanelli made nine straight starts since his first one against Murray State before sitting out the April 5 contest against USA and has 10 hits for the year with five being extra-base hits. He hit his first home run of the season against SEMO March 31, which was also his first since he hit three against UALR in one game during the 2013 season. Collin Massanelli made the most of his first start of the season against Murray State on March 24. The senior outfielder struck out in his first at-bat, but then went 4-for-4 with a walk to end the day 4-for-5 with an RBI. The four-hit game was only the second by an A-State player this season. He ripped a double to right-center field in his second at-bat, laid a perfect bunt single down the third-base line in his next at-bat, roped a triple about 22 feet high off the 25-foot batter s eye in center field, and registered his final hit of the day in the ninth when he hit a single up the middle to score a run. 8 2015 Arkansas State Baseball Game Notes Game 35 / vs. Central Arkansas JUNIOR SEASON (2015): Has made five apperances all out of the bullpen... tossed a season-high four innings against Illinois State on Feb. 14 and earned first career save... tossed caree-high seven innings against Tennessee in first start of the season on April 1... allowed four runs (all earned) on 10 hits with one walk and four strikeouts... made second start of season at SIU and gave up five runs (all earned) on five hits with three walks and one strikeout.
