T hese arc: forked leng th. pr e-d o rsal len gth a nd do rsa l fin ba se. Introduction Family Centracanthidae (Picar els) is re presented in the Egypti an Mediterranean wat ers by three species: Spicara flexu osa (Rafinesque, IR10), Spicara sma ris (Linnaeus. 175R) and Spi cara ma ena ( Linn aeus, 175R). O f th ese three species only th e first two a re co mme rcially important while the th ird on e Spicara maen a is rarel y found. Ri zkalla (1992) a nd Faltas ( 1993) mention ed that picarles in Egypt occupy a distinct positi on am ong the catches of the ma in demer sal fishes con stituting 29.R% and 16.14'1'0 respectively. In the present study a comparison between the different morphometric chara cte rs of S. flexuosa, S. smaris and S. ma ena using an alysi s of covariance given by Snedeco r & Co chra n (1982) has be en carried out in orde r to find the bases for d ifferentiation between the three species. Material and Methods Samples of Spicara spec ies wer e collected fro m bottom tr awlers operating along the Egyptian Mediterranean coast during th e peri od from J anu ary to December For morphometric studies, 320 individuals of Spicam [lexu osa ranging in total length between 8.0 cm and 21.0 em ; 212 individuals of Spicara sm aris ha ving sizes from 9.0 cm to 18.0 cm and 105 fish o f Spicara maena having total range from 9.0 em to 16.0 em were examined. The following 15 measurements were obtained for ea ch fish and were measured to the nearest millimet er: tot al length (T.L.), forked len gth (F.L.), standa rd lengths (S.L.), head length (H.L.), pre-dorsal length ( Pr. D.). dorsal fin base ( D. F.B.), pre-pectoral len gth (Pr. P) pr e-ventral length (Pr. Y.), pr e-anal len gth (Pr. A.), an al fin length (A. F. L.), body depth (B. D. ). pr e-orbital distance (Pr. 0.), post-orbital len gth (P.O.), E ye diam eter ( E.D.) and int er o rbita l width (1.0.), (Fi g. 1). The linear regression equation is used to obtain the relation between the total len gth and ea ch o ne of the different morphometric charact er s with the exceptio n of pr e-orbital len gth, post-orbital length, eye diameter and int er- orbital width which ar e related to head length.
