6 B. Hw Perfrmance Indicatrs (PI s) are manifested in items Organizatin f PI s Within Standards The WIDA standards are written and rganized by cntent area, language dmain, grade level cluster, and prficiency level. Each strand f perfrmance indicatrs, that is, a set f PI s that extend acrss the prficiency levels fr a particular grade level, describe the same cntent tpic in terms f increasingly difficult language tasks. The fllwing examples shws the Science standard exemplified by PI s in the Reading dmain. English Language Prficiency Standard 4: English language learners cmmunicate infrmatin, ideas, and cncepts necessary fr academic success in the cntent area f SCIENCE. Language Dmain: READING prcess, interpret, and evaluate written language, symbls, and text with understanding and fluency 6 Cpyright State f Wiscnsin. All rights reserved Intrductin

7 Each test item n the ACCESS fr ELLs is written t address a specific perfrmance indicatr, which, in turn, addresses a specific prficiency level. The illustratin belw highlights ne PI fr Grade Level K-2 at Prficiency Level 2. This PI becmes the starting pint fr develping a test item. 8 Items in the ACCESS fr ELLs test are arranged int theme flders, which are cllectins f test items rganized alng sme cntent tpic. Fr example, a theme flder fr grades 9-12, Reading, Science may cnsist f 3-6 items related t the water cycle. Each theme flder addresses three prficiency levels, r three perfrmance indicatrs, and the items always increase in difficulty thrughut the flder. English Language Prficiency Standard 4: English language learners cmmunicate infrmatin, ideas, and cncepts necessary fr academic success in the cntent area f SCIENCE. Language Dmain: READING prcess, interpret, and evaluate written language, symbls, and text with understanding and fluency Match surces f data depicted in tables, charts, r graphs frm scientific studies with research questins Extract infrmatin n the use f data presented in text and tables Interpret data presented in text and tables in scientific studies 8 Cpyright State f Wiscnsin. 9 Theme flders cnsist f a theme graphic fllwed by items that crrespnd t the three prficiency levels/perfrmance indicatrs being assessed. The items may als have additinal graphic stimuli, and the respnse chices will be either graphic r text depending n the grade levels and tier being tested. Belw is a sample theme flder fr Science, Listening, fr Grades 1-2, Tier A. Since this is a Tier A flder, the prficiency levels cvered are 1, 2, and 3. 32 R91C_SS_Pmpeii Part C: Try and Pmpeii The passages belw will teach yu abut tw ancient cities, Try and Pmpeii. Read the passages t learn what mdern archaelgy has revealed abut these tw cities. Try It is still a mystery whether the city f Try, lcated in western Turkey, was destryed by war r by sme ther frce. Try was made famus by Hmer in his 9th century B.C. pem, The Illiad. In this pem, Achilles and his army besiege the city because Try s prince, Paris, had stlen a beautiful wman named Helen away frm her husband in Greece. Curisity abut the existence f Try led Eurpean archaelgists t search fr the ruins f the ancient city, and in 1870 A.D., these archaelgists excavated the site where peple thught Try had existed. Evidence shwed them, hwever, that the city may have been destryed by an earthquake and nt by the war Hmer wrte abut. Peple tday cntinue t speculate abut the destructin f Try and abut whether Hmer s stry is fact r fictin. Pmpeii When Munt Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D., the city f Pmpeii and its inhabitants were buried under the vlcan s ashes. The buried city was frgtten fr a lng time. Then in 1748 A.D., archaelgists wh were excavating the site discvered that the ashes had preserved much f the city. Yu can walk thrugh the streets f Pmpeii just as they were befre Munt Vesuvius erupted. Even the clred fresces, r large wall paintings, are still intact nearly 1,700 years later. Because f this preservatin, archaelgists have been able t learn many things abut everyday life in Pmpeii. It was a thriving Rman city with a ppulatin f mre than 20,000 peple. Pmpeii was knwn as a trading twn, and many peple there wrked as artisans r shpkeepers. Even tday excavatins cntinue and archaelgists are learning mre and mre abut life in this ancient city. 32 Cpyright State f Wiscnsin. All rights reserved Samples Reading
