Spoken Written Informal Example 1 Hi, Roge! What s up? Ho s the fa il? Not so good. Kate a d I, e e ee sepa ated fo th ee o ths o, so I do t get to see the hild e u h. I so so to hea that. I did t have a clue. Example 2 Wh a e ou sta di g i the hall? I hea d so e oi es i the o fe e e oo. Do ou have a clue hat s goi g o the e? A oa d eeti g, I guess. 1

3 Czenglish WRONG: RIGHT: I o i g flats so I eed to fi d so e carton boxes. I o i g flats so I eed to fi d so e cardboard boxes. The o d a to is o fusi g i E glish. It is ot, like i Cze h, the box material in which you get, for e a ple, ou e pai of shoes. That is alled a d oa d. Thi k pape is alled a d a d the thi ke o e used fo o es is alled a d oa d. A carton is a box for liquid, for example, a carton of milk, or the homeless favourite a carton of wine. We also use the word for cigarettes when there are 10 packs together. At Duty Free, you buy a carton of cigarettes. And one more thing since teachers get asked this if there are several cartons of milk together, we do not use a carton of cartons! That is far too confusing. Instead, we are likely to simply say 6 a to s of ilk, o a si -pa k of ilk. He e s a o e satio a out e li g usi g the o e t te s: A: I need to take these cardboard boxes to the recycling bin. Could you pass me those milk cartons also? B: Sure, I actually buy my milk in a bottle rather than a carton, it seems somehow healthier! 3
4 Business Writing Business Writing Tip #77 Understanding common directions When we write essays in an academic setting we are usually answering a question that has been set for us. At work, when it comes to business reports, we may also be given a question to answer, or directions to follow. For example: We are planning to buy a new photocopier. Here are the details that three companies have provided us about their models. Can you put together a report comparing them on the basis of the features, initial costs and lifecycle costs (including consumables and maintenance) and make a recommendation? The vocabulary used for giving directions is fairly standard, but sometimes we may not understand exactly what we are being asked for. To help ou i te p et su h di e tio s, he e s a list of o o o ds used i uestio s a d simple definitions. Analyse Argue Assess Classify Compare Contrast Define Describe Discuss Evaluate Divide the issue into its main parts and discuss each part. 6 TEST: In-flight phone use Australian airlines Qantas and Virgin Australia ha e de ided to (1) their customers permission to use their mobile phones and other electronic devices during flights. The new rule will affect tablets, e-readers and small game consoles, as well as smartphones, and it will appl (2) international and domestic passengers flying the two Australian airlines. Passengers were previously asked to switch off these types of devices during flights for (3) reasons. Qantas and Virgin Australia thus followed the new trend of some airlines in the United States, Europe and New Zealand, when the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) (4) applications from both Australian airlines late on Monday. The new rule for the Australian airlines means passengers can continue to play games or draft s on their phones during take-off a d (5). The reason for the change is that aircraft are now designed and manufactured so that smartphones and other electronic devices do not (6) with flights. Nonetheless, the permission does not include passengers being allowed to speak on their phones from gate to gate. And larger devices such as laptops will still need to e sto ed a a due to isks of tu ule e, said CASA spokes a Pete Gi so. (7) the change, at some point crew will ask passengers, probably before the safety briefing is gi e, to tu off thei ele t o i de i es. The ll ha e to eithe s it h the off o put the (8) flight mode. Once a smartphone is in its so-called flight mode, it means passengers can no-longer send text messages or make calls. I t odu tio of that ki d of te h olog ill e the e t step, (9) to Mr Gibson. It would replace satellite phones which have been enabled on flights for many years, but the connections are extremely expensive. Newer technology will make in-flight calls o e (10) and enable connection to the internet during flights. The technology has been on trial, but neither Qantas nor Virgin Australia have made the investment yet, for they ha e t de ided et hethe the could recover the costs. 1.
