6A Lab Post-test Instructions for printed version Week 10, Fall 2016 This is the printed version of 6A Lab post-test. Please complete it during your final 6A lab, which will occur during week 10. DO NOT begin this post-test before the final 6A lab. If you are able to complete this test online (using your laptop, smartphone, or lab computer), we encourage you to use that rather than this paper version. If you complete the paper version of this post-test, it is your responsibility to go back later and copy over your answers to CCLE. Be careful the questions will be the same, but the answer choices may be scrambled for some questions. Note that completion of this post-test is a REQUIRED component of the final 6A lab, but is also worth two mills. Note that you will need to put effort into the test in order to receive credit. If you do not complete this test, you will receive neither full credit for attending the final 6A lab nor these two mills. The pages which follow are pdf printouts of the post-test from CCLE. They were previewed by an instructor please ignore the text at the top reading You can preview this quiz, but if this were a real attempt, you would be blocked. Note also that while the pages that follow list lecture 5, the quiz is identical for all lectures. 1

1 of 1 11/27/16 8:25 PM Information Please spend minutes completing this post-test during the final 6A lab. DO NOT begin this post-test before your final 6A lab section. This post-test will help assess your familiarity some skills which were used in the labs and throughout the course, and which are useful for doing science in general. It also gives us a valuable chance to assess how much familiarity you have with these skills toward the end of the course. Note that many 6A instructors value the skills involved in this post-test, so practicing with them here may help with you your exams! Please complete this post-test without assistance from anyone else. Question 1 Not graded Which of the following statements is true for you? a. I am completing this post-test electronically in lab. b. I completed a paper copy of this post-test in lab, and now I'm copying over my answers electronically. c. I'm completing this post-test for the first time after experiment 7 (rotational motion). d. I'm completing this post-test for the first time before experiment 7 (rotational motion).

1 of 1 11/22/16 2:36 PM Information The questions that follow deal with comparing a scientific model to experiment. These questions are designed to be without any prior knowledge of physics or biology. Tip: We strongly recommend you take out a pen and paper to use for scratchwork in the following questions. You will likely find it very helpful to draw graphs of the equations which follow.

1 of 3 11/22/16 2:37 PM Information You are conducting an experiment measuring the size and growth rate of an isolated population of white tailed deer. You measure 50 data points of population growth rate vs population size. You are attempting to verify a population growth model which gives as a function of : where and are positive constants. You obtain a graph of vs by plotting your data. (Note: This means is on the vertical axis, and is on the horizontal axis.) Question 12 If the model you are using is correct, what shape should the graph of your data, vs, look like? a. Exponential b. Logarithmic c. Quadratic d. Linear e. Constant f. None of the above

2 of 3 11/22/16 2:37 PM Question 13 The population growth model predicts the slope of your graph at a. will be b. c. d. e. f. g. h. i. j. k. None of these Question 14 As stated above, you collected data on the population growth rate vs population size. Suppose instead that you had collected data on the population size vs time. However, you realize that there must be a mathematical relationship between population size throughout time and its growth rate. To demonstrate that you are reading this assignment carefully, choose 'take the derivative of r with respect to N' as your response to this question and ignore the rest of this prompt. You notice that 'population growth rate' sounds like 'rate of change,' and you guess that the relationship between these variables has something to do with calculus. How do you need to manipulate the data? a. None of these b. Take a derivative of with respect to c. Take a derivative of with respect to d. Take a derivative of with respect to e. Take a derivative of with respect to f. Take a derivative of with respect to g. Take a derivative of with respect to Information Your friend conducts similar measurements to yours, but on a population of brown owls rather than white tailed deer. Since these are different species, you expect both populations to follow the same model given above, but for different values of the parameters and.

3 of 3 11/22/16 2:37 PM Question 15 Consider the slope at and the -intercept of a graph of vs for both populations. Suppose that you and your friend compare your data to find that your friend's data indicates a larger value of the same value of as your data does. Remember, and are positive for both populations. Further, note that a steeper slope means the curve is closer to being vertical. Which of the following statements are true?, but Tip: You'll likely find it very helpful to draw the graphs using pen and paper. Select one or more: a. Your graph has a positive slope at N=10 b. Your graph has a negative slope at N=10 c. Your friend's graph has a positive slope at N=10 d. Your friend's graph has a negative slope at N=10 e. Your graph has a steeper slope at N=10 than your friend's graph f. Your friend's graph has a steeper slope at N=10 than your graph g. Your graph and your friend's graph have equally steep slopes at N=10 h. Your graph has a larger r-intercept than your friend's graph i. Your friend's graph has a larger r-intercept than your graph j. Your graph and your friend's graph have the same r-intercept k. None of the above are true for the given information

1 of 1 11/22/16 2:38 PM Information You're almost done! The questions that follow involve concepts related to torque and the biceps muscle lab.

1 of 3 11/22/16 2:40 PM

2 of 3 11/22/16 2:40 PM Information Suppose you are working with the apparatus in the Biceps Muscle experiment. (See the diagram below.) You have the apparatus set up with, and the forearm is horizontal. Then you change the setup so that takes a smaller values of. You make sure to adjust the attachment to the elbow so that the forearm is once again horizontal. The following questions ask you how various quantities are affected by this decrease in. Note: In lab, you may have used only, the angle between the forearm and the biceps force; or only between the biceps muscle and the upper arm. Fear not! The two are related by geometry., the angle

3 of 3 11/22/16 2:40 PM Question 16 How do the forces and experimental parameters change with the decrease in (Check all that apply.) Select one or more: a. The magnitude of the force increases b. The magnitude of the force decreases described above? c. The magnitude of the force increases d. The magnitude of the force decreases e. The magnitude of the force increases f. The magnitude of the force decreases g. The length increases h. The length decreases i. The angle increases j. The angle decreases k. The angle increases l. The angle decreases m. None of these Question 17 How do the torques applied to the forearm about the elbow change with the decrease in described above? (Check all that apply.) Select one or more: a. The magnitude of the torque on the forearm about the elbow due to the force increases b. The magnitude of the torque on the forearm about the elbow due to the force decreases c. The magnitude of the torque on the forearm about the elbow due to the force increases d. The magnitude of the torque on the forearm about the elbow due to the force decreases e. The magnitude of the torque on the forearm about the elbow due to the force increases f. The magnitude of the torque on the forearm about the elbow due to the force decreases g. None of the above

1 of 1 11/22/16 2:43 PM Information This is the last page! We just have a couple of questions asking your opinion of the biceps muscle lab. Thank you for your time. Question 20 Not graded How much do you agree with the following statement? I learned more from the way the biceps muscle lab was designed than from other labs. a. Strongly agree b. Agree c. Disagree d. Strongly disagree Question 21 Not graded How much do you agree with the following statement? I enjoyed completing the biceps muscle lab (relative to other labs in the course). a. Strongly agree b. Agree c. Disagree d. Strongly disagree Question 22 Not graded How much do you agree with the following statement? I wish the biceps muscle lab had been more like other labs. a. Strongly agree b. Agree c. Disagree d. Strongly disagree
