1 GEOLOGY 101 Introductory Geology Lab Hunter North 1021 Times, days and instructors vary with section Brief description/purpose of course: GEOL 101, Introductory Geology Lab, is one of two co-requisite courses in the GEOL 100/101 sequence and are designed to be taken in the same semester. Students will not receive credit for the courses until both courses receive passing grades. GEOL 101 is a hands on laboratory science course that supports, and is supported by, the lecture material in GEOL 100. This course is designed to compliment what is being taught in Geology 100. Lab assists in learning and expanding understanding about the scale of Earth and the forces that shape it from hands on experience. Upon completion of this course students will understand the scientific method, the formation and evolution of the Earth, plate tectonics, the rock cycle and the formation, distribution of natural resources and will begin to foster an understanding of how these can be seen and understood in the field. This course fulfills Hunter GER requirements 2E for lab science Expected Outcomes: The goals of the course include introducing students to geology, systems thinking", the methods of scientific inquiry, and inspiring an appreciation for the Earth and awareness that the Earth must be stewarded wisely. In addition, this course will provide students with hands on learning experience in the laboratory. Required Lab Manual: Physical Geology (with 6 models) 9th edition; Busch; Pearson Publishing; ISBN: Approximately $98.00 New. There should be used copies available at Shakespeare s but beware of used copies. Make sure all of the pages are included and intact. Grading: Assignments Weighting 9 labs 45% (5% each) 3 practical exams 45% (15% each) Attendance and punctuality 10% You are permitted two unexcused absences during a term. Your instructor reserves the right to deduct 1/3 of a letter grade for EACH additional absence beyond the allotted number or for habitual lateness. 1

2 Grades of IN (incomplete) are not normally given in this course. If you have not taken all of the exams, you have not met the requirements of the class and will be given a final grade of "F". Credit/No Credit forms will not be honored under these circumstances. Credit/No Credit will be accepted up to 10 minutes prior to the third exam. Your lab instructor will not sign a Credit/No Credit slip after the third exam is distributed. The Hunter College grading system will be used in this class and can be viewed in the latest undergraduate catalog available online at the Registrar s homepage. CUNY grading policy that can be found in the online undergraduate catalog that can be found at Lab Notebook: The lab book is the most important record a scientist can keep. In it they keep a record of their experiments, observations, results, successes and failures. In this class you are required to keep a laboratory notebook as a record of your laboratory work. This book will serve as an important record of your experiments and observations. It will also serve the practical purpose of keeping all of your assignments in one place, so that you can use it as a reference and as a study tool. You are required to follow the following directions to prepare and keep your notebook: At the beginning of each new lab, you must come to class with the introduction already written. This is to make sure you are familiar with the laboratory material and have thought about the purpose and methods of the lab. This will enhance your enjoyment of the lab and help you use the laboratory period efficiently. The laboratory notebook is a simple black and white (or green and white) composition notebook that can be purchase in the Hunter College Bookstore. 1) Number all the pages in the lab notebook and label the first three pages Table of Contents. 2) As you work in the lab notebook date each page with the current date and fill in the Table of Contents. All page numbers and dates should be on the upper left of the left-hand pages and the upper right of the right-hand pages. 3) All work must be done in pen. If you need to change an answer etc. cross out the original with a single line, and clearly make the desired change. The purpose of keeping a lab notebook is to give you experience in keeping a permanent record that would allow you, or anyone reading your notebook, to reconstruct your experiment(s) and obtain similar results. Keeping such a record is one of the most important aspects of doing science. Notes that your instructor will give you in the beginning of each laboratory in this notebook, or you may choose to keep these in a separate book. 4) Each laboratory will include the following sections: an introduction, procedure, materials used (where relevant), charts and tables that you will fill in on the appropriate pages of your lab manual and attach to your notebook, answers to the questions posed in the laboratory manual, and a conclusion. You must include the relevant figures, charts, graphs etc. that a given question/answer refers to. Any charts, tables, maps etc. from the lab manual are to be stapled or taped into your lab notebook so that both sides of a page are easily readable (if necessary) and so that 2

3 no paper extends beyond the bounds of the notebook. You must attach all relevant maps, charts etc. This means that if you refer to any diagrams, maps, charts etc. they must be included in your notebook. Remember to reference the page and figure number that to which your answer/conclusions. You will be shown an example of a laboratory notebook during your first laboratory or second meeting. 5) Answer all questions in full sentences. DO NOT RECOPY THE QUESTION IN YOUR NOTEBOOK. Rather, answer the question so that the question is implicit in the answer. For instance, if the question is, What color is the rock on table A? your answer might be, The color of the rock on table A is gray. An unacceptable answer would be gray. Use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling. If you are not sure of the spelling use a dictionary. A very convenient on line dictionary can be found at: 6) It is your responsibility to make your notebook clear and legible. Your lab instructor must grade your notebooks efficiently and, if they cannot find your answers easily, points will be deducted. WHEN ARE LAB EXERCISES DUE? Lab exercises are due, in lab, at the next lab meeting when you start the next lab. Late labs will have the grade reduced 20% for each DAY received late unless you have a valid excuse that can be documented. Labs are due at the beginning of lab. Once labs are collected by your lab instructor, any labs handed in are considered late. This policy will be strictly enforced. Lab exercises must be stapled (no paper clips) with your name printed neatly in the space on the first page and in the lower-right corner of the front of every page. Your lab grade will be reduced if you don't follow this policy. WHAT IF I MISS A LAB? If you miss a lab do not wait until the next lab meeting to hand in your lab (see above). Attendance will be taken in each lab and is included in your lab grade. This includes lateness. Habitual lab lateness or leaving early can result in points deducted from your lab average (see grading section). CAN I DO SOMETHING FOR EXTRA CREDIT? LIKE A PAPER? No. No extra credit is given in this course. Whatever effort you would put into an extra credit assignment, put into completing the labs and studying for exams and quizzes. Classroom policies: You are expected to have read the reading listed (the lab itself) for each face-to-face class before class on that date. There is no texting permitted in the classroom. Earphones are not to be worn in the classroom (either on ears or around necks). Laptops are only permitted in the front row. Please remember that access to the internet occasionally fails to work for reasons beyond your or my control. I reserve the right to alter or add topics and assignments as needed. 3

4 Hunter College Policy on Academic Integrity Hunter College regards acts of academic dishonesty (e.g., plagiarism, cheating on examinations, obtaining unfair advantage, and falsification of records and official documents) as serious offenses against the values of intellectual honesty. The College is committed to enforcing the CUNY Policy on Academic Integrity and will pursue cases of academic dishonesty according to the Hunter College Academic Integrity Procedures. ADA Policy: In compliance with the American Disability Act of 1990 (ADA) and with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Hunter College is committed to ensuring educational parity and accommodations for all students with documented disabilities and/or medical conditions. It is recommended that all students with documented disabilities (Emotional, Medical, Physical, and/or Learning) consult the Office of AccessABILITY to secure necessary academic accommodations.
