1 Final User Workshop ESA Data User Element DUE Permafrost February, 15 th - 17 th, 2012 Event Description The ESA Data User Element DUE Permafrost aims to establish a permafrost monitoring service based on operational remote sensing datasets. The satellite-derived products (on regional to circum-polar scales) which are specifically addressed are land surface temperature, surface soil moisture, surface frozen/thawed state, surface waters, terrain (elevation and subsidence), and land cover. The project team consists of scientists from Austria, Canada, Germany and Switzerland. Snow extent and snow water equivalent datasets are available from DUE Globsnow. The 3 rd and final DUE Permafrost User Workshop will be hosted by the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, AWI, in Potsdam, Germany. The DUE Permafrost monitoring service will be presented and applications discussed with the participants. The workshop is open to all. Participants are encouraged to prepare posters and a short (3-4 minutes) introduction to their research. 4 Friday 17 th of February 2012 Final User Workshop a.m 1 st Session, Open Discussion Modelling and Remote Sensing [Permafrost] This session will discuss issues on modelling and remote sensing data, for example, remote sensing data as input as external spatial data, forcing spatial data, boundary spatial data and evaluating spatial data for modelling of climate, permafrost and vegetation. In this session, case studies will be introduced to stimulate the discussion. refreshment break a.m 2 nd Session, Open Discussion Field monitoring and Remote Sensing [Permafrost] This session will discuss issues on field monitoring and remote sensing data: for example the vice-versa effective use of field data needed for the evaluation of remote sensing data and remote sensing data as a tool for monitoring, extrapolation and scaling. 5 Travelling and hotel Potsdam can be easily reached by public transport from the Berlin airports (Tegel or Schönefeld). Busses and trains provide a quick and comfortable connection. Travelling from Airport Berlin-Tegel to Potsdam: If you arrive at Berlin-Tegel airport, the quickest way to get to Potsdam is by bus and then by the S-Bahn. The bus stop is in front of the main entrance of the airport. Buses 109 or X9 will take you directly to Zoologischer Garten railway station (Direction: S+U Zoologischer Garten). At Zoologischer Garten railway station take the S-Bahn S7 to Potsdam (it is a direct city train, leaving every 10 minutes). The S-Bahn journey takes 40 minutes. Please calculate min for the entire journey. Tickets: Buy a single ticket or a day ticket for zones Berlin ABC. The tickets are valid in Berlin and Potsdam. You can buy a ticket from a bus driver or from a ticket machine on the S-Bahn platform. Travelling from Airport Berlin-Schönefeld to Potsdam: There is a direct train (Regionalbahn) connecting the Berlin-Schönefeld airport with Potsdam (RB22 direction Potsdam Hbf). Potsdam is the last station on this train and the train leaves every hour. The journey takes 60 min. Tickets can be purchased on the platform from a ticket machine. Workshop hotel: A number of rooms have been booked at attractive rates (single room 70 Euro incl. breakfast, double rooms 85 EUR incl. breakfast) in the Mercure Hotel Potsdam ( This hotel is close to the workshop venue (about 20 minutes walking distance) and just on the other side of the bridge from the train station. A 10 minute walk will get you to downtown Potsdam to local shops, eateries, and bars. You must make your own reservations. 6 Workshop Venue The workshop will be held at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Potsdam. The institute is located on the wooded hill of Telegrafenberg in a historical campus (19 th century). The best known historical building in the campus park Albert Einstein is the Einstein Tower, an astrophysical observatory that was built to perform checks of Einstein's theory of General Relativity. Access by walk from the Potsdam central train station or the Mercure hotel takes approximately 20 minutes ( You can also go by bus from the central bus stands at Potsdam Hauptbahnhof (south exit): the bus 691 to Telegrafenberg leaves hourly from platfrom7 at.14 and.44 (7 a.m to 9 a.m). Taxis can bring you also to the entrance of the campus. From there you ll have to walk to Haus H (1 minute). The Lecture Rooms are located in the building Haus H.
