2 INTRODUCTION: The concept of water security involves the sustainable use and protection of water systems, protection against water related hazards (floods and droughts), the sustainable development of water resources and the safeguarding of (access to) water functions and services for humans and the environment. Sound governance policies, based on well-grounded science, are the precondition to address water security challenges in today s setting. Sediment management must be seen as playing a key role in achieving water security at different scales. Across the world, erosion, sediment transport and sedimentation processes have wide-ranging social, economic and environmental impacts. Modification of the sediment budgets of catchments and river basins by human activities result in important social, economic and environmental repercussions. The negative impacts of erosion and sedimentation are further exacerbated by global change. However, there are major gaps in baseline sediment data, in current knowledge and understanding of sediment mobilization, transport and storage and sediment budgets, and in our understanding of socio-economic and environmental impacts. Sediment management strategies and practices must be improved if we are to deal effectively with erosion and sedimentation problems. INTERNATIONAL TRAINING WORKSHOP: An International Training Workshop on Integrated Sediment Management in River Basins will be held in Beijing, China in November Sponsored by UNESCO and the China Ministry of Water Resources and organized by IRTCES, the UNESCO Beijing Office and the UNESCO International Sediment Initiative (ISI) it represents a major activity of ISI for Integrated sediment management in river basins refers to the sustainable management of sediment by solving different sediment problems in a coordinated manner, with the aim of protecting the well-being of the people living in the river basin and promoting the sustainable use of land and water resources. It seeks to ensure that basins are economically productive, socially equitable, and environmentally sustainable. The International Training Workshop on Integrated Sediment Management in River Basins has been designed to fulfil the demands of engineers, scientists, managers, stakeholders and decision-makers engaged in river basin management, river governance, reservoir operation, flood control and water and environmental management in various countries, especially developing countries with serious sediment problems. Through lectures, discussions, exchanges and a one-day field study, participants will learn about relevant technologies, methods and new concepts in the field of integrated sediment management of river basins, as well as discuss sediment problems and their management and extend their professional networks. UNESCO, the Ministry of Water Resources, P.R. China and IRTCES are providing financial support for this training course which is being promoted by ISI within the framework of the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme (IHP). 3 TRAINING WORKSHOP CONTENT 1. The impact of global change on the sediment loads of the world s rivers (Prof. Des. Walling, member ISI Advisory Group); 2. Overview of Ssoil and Water Conservation in the world; Soil and Water Conservation in China (Prof. Rui Li, WASWAC President); 3. Reservoir sedimentation and sediment management (Prof. Manfred Spreafico, ISI Chairman); 4. Integrated sediment management in river basins: strategies and experience in China (Prof. Zhao-Yin Wang, WASER President; member ISI Expert Group); 5. Sediment-related ecological problems and their control (Dr. Mengzhen Xu, (Ms.), Tsinghua University); 6. Sediment monitoring in Germany: implications for managing sediment-related ecological problems in developing countries (Dr. Thomas Hoffmann, Germany) 7. Seminar comprising presentations by participants describing sediment problems and management strategies in their home countries and discussion. (coordinated by Prof. Des. Walling); 8. Study tour: Laboratory of IWHR (China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research); and the Small Watershed Management Demonstration Site in suburban Beijing. Potential participants should be proficient in both speaking and writing in English. Background of Participants: The Training Workshop has been designed for, and is open to, engineers, scientists and managers who are specialists in river basin management, reservoir management, sediment and erosion issues, geomorphology etc. Participants receiving financial support will be nominated by UNESCO field offices in consultation with the IHP Secretariat. Additional self-funding participants are encouraged to attend the Training Worksop. The registration fee for participants who are not nominated and supported by UNESCO is RMB 2000 (or US$ 300). BOARD AND LODGING: Full board (accommodation and meals) for the period November 5-10, 2018 will be provided to sponsored participants nominated by UNESCO. Two participants will share a standard hotel room. They may pay an extra cost (RMB 250 or US$ 40 per night) themselves if they prefer a single room or stay longer (RMB 500 or US$ 80 per night). Meals (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) are included. If participants have any special requirements for food please indicate these to the Workshop organizer who will try to fulfil your need. Participants who are not nominated and supported by UNESCO will be required to meet their own hotel and subsistence costs.

5 TRAVEL COSTS: Where possible, all participants should bear their own travel cost to and from Beijing. Support for airfare costs will be made available to a limited number of participants from developing countries nominated by UNESCO, whose host institution or sponsor is unable to cover airfare costs. Participants should try to obtain support for travel from their organization or apply for partial support from the local UNESCO Office or other donors. VISA AND OFFICIAL INVITATION: To enter China everyone requires a valid Chinese visa. It is strongly advised to obtain a Chinese Visa before leaving the home country. The organizer will arrange the official invitation document to support visa applications by participants. EXPENDITURE TO BE COVERED BY PARTICIPANTS: Daily Subsistence Allowances (DSA) if any, costs incurred by participants with respect to medical insurance, loss or damage to personal property, compensation in the event of death or disability of participants while attending the Workshop and any other claim by participants towards other expenses incurred during the Workshop and associated travel. In the event of hospitalization during the programme, participants will have to cover the related expenditure. INSURANCE All participants are advised to take arrange adequate insurance cover for health, medical, accident or any other health related incidents during their stay in China, UNESCO / IRTCES shall not be responsible for such expenses.
