Steve Whittaker, Petroleum Technology Research Centre Stephen Bend, University of Regina Ben Rostron, University of Alberta Gavin Jensen, Ministry of Energy & Resources Williston Basin Petroleum Conference 2009
Project Description Project Participants Project Goals & Objectives Project Co-ordination Project Outputs & Products
Assessment of Phanerozoic fluids and petroleum systems in the Williston Basin Address the evolution of Saskatchewan s sedimentary basin that resulted in: Generation Migration Entrapment Series of Integrated Studies Stratigraphy Hydrogeology Geochemistry Geothermics Modelling Collaborative: involves universities and government researchers and Industry? 4 year project: began March 2009
University of Regina University of Alberta Ministry of Energy & Resources PTRC Dr. Stephen Bend 1 MSc; 1 PhD Dr. Ben Rostron 2 MSc; 1PhD Dr. Chris Gilboy Erik Nickel, Arden Marsh, Gavin Jensen Project management EOR; JIVE;CO2 Programs Industry Open to PARTICIPATON & SPONSORSHIP
Increase our understanding When and where hydrocarbons were generated Where and when they migrated in geologic history Where and how they are most likely trapped at present Provide data for more accurate resource estimates Industry Government Inform exploration and development strategies for Industry Conventional Unconventional
To achieve a reasonable result requires involving and integrating several disciplines Develop petroleum geochemical database from culled existing and new data Complete gaps in hydrogeological mapping of portions of the Saskatchewan subsurface Characterize and delineate areas of source rock kitchens and migration fairways Produce a detailed thermal field of the subsurface Model the maturation, generation and migration of petroleum in the Williston Basin
Identify data needs to achieve final product: compile existing data Identify gaps in data availability: develop & implement plan to obtain required data Ensure integration among disciplines to provide suitable parameters for basin modelling Perform simulations to provide realistic representations of the evolution of Saskatchewan s petroleum system
Regional hydrogeology and hydrochemistry of southwest Saskatchewan: MSc Fill gaps in hydrogeological mapping portions of Saskatchewan s subsurface - most notably in the southwest and northwest Examine all Phanerozoic strata from the Precambrian to about 250 metres below the land surface Provide a complete and integrated hydrostratigraphic picture of the subsurface of Saskatchewan
Geothermics of the Williston Basin: MSc Map the temperature field building on earlier work conducted in the basin Numerous deeper oil and gas wells drilled into the basin (since deep rights reversion in 1997) Implications for hydrocarbon generation, but also in the areas of geothermal energy, and CO2 storage Data are essential for providing constraining parameters in basin modelling
Petroleum Geochemistry: MSc & PhD Focus on formations that have potential for hydrocarbon generation Bakken, Dawson Bay, Ratner, Shaunavon, Winnipeg RockEval, vitrinite reflectance, petrography, GC-MS (biomarker), hydrous pyrolysis and isotope typing Delineate source rock potential into mapable organofacies Oil-oil and oilsource correlations are essential to identify migration fairways.
Quantitative analysis of petroleum generation, migration, and entrapment in the Williston Basin: PhD Perform1D burial history analyses and calibrate model with data from other Tasks Construct 2D transects across the entire WB from Montana, to Winnipeg from SW Sask to Rocanville Integrate new data being generated within the project into dynamic 3D model of the basin IES Petromod (1D, 2D, 3D), Basin2 (water, heat, and solute transport code), MPath (Permedia Group).
Simulate oil generation & migration in the Bakken of the Williston Basin Consider wide area: North Dakota, Montana, Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan Examine novel modelling methods Use existing geological data

Integration of Hydrogeological Data across Saskatchewan: MER Complete Hydrostratigraphy of Northwest Saskatchewan Integrate with existing framework established for province s subsurface and with Task 1 Integrate all hydrogeological data compiled and generated into a seamless provincial map series
Integration of existing stratigraphic data for Saskatchewan: MER Most stratigraphic data has been generated by the MER Petroleum Branch during previous regional mapping projects Mesh existing data from the western part of the province into a consistent, seamless stratigraphic database for the province Stratigraphic data and resulting maps will serve as the foundation for the studies in this, and many future, projects.
The Technical Steering Committee and PTRC will monitor Progress Results Schedule Products Integration and Communication Semi-annual Project Meetings with researchers & sponsors Ongoing technical interaction among all researchers
Annual Reports Summary of Investigations Williston Basin Petroleum Conference Conference Presentations Comprehensive Datasets Stratigraphic: seamless data Hydrogeological maps & cross-sections Petroleum Geochemistry: organo-facies maps Thermal field maps of subsurface Final Interpretations Compendium CD / Interactive Website 3D Dynamic Basin Models Peer-reviewed Publications
Improve understanding of petroleum systems in Saskatchewan and Williston Basin region Improve resource assessments by governments and industry Help industry with exploration and development strategies Will increase training capacity at universities Industry involvement will greatly assist program development and execution
