Introduction Building the 3-D geological map Applied projects and outputs Live demonstration of model delivery Kingsley Dunham Centre Keyworth Nottingham NG12 5GG Tel NERC All rights reserved
Introduction - 5 year research programme into 3D geological modelling completed in Standards, data formats and workflows have been established - GSI3D and GoCad have been chosen as corporate software - Systematic geological models of the UK are now core deliverable of the Survey - Development of products and delivery methods is now one of the key priorities 20 projects and more than 50 staff have contributed to the work presented here A BIG THANKS TO ALL
Introduction Glasgow Current large scale (10k and 50k) modelling projects (Sep 2005) Solid purple completed Diagonal lines in progress Manchester York Location of examples used in this presentation Ipswich London/ Thames Gateway
Building the 3D geological map
The GSI3D methodology developed by Hans-Georg Sobisch (INSIGHT, Cologne) since 1996 initially in conjunction with Geologists from the Lower Saxony Geological Survey, Germany methodology published in his PhD in 2000 since 2002 co-operation with the BGS and bespoke development of software tool GSI3D Flowdiagram
The importance of sections in geological mapping AND modelling William Smith s composite section from his 1815 map of the UK
Interactive section drawing in GSI3D the expert decides
Validation of DTM, boreholes, sections, map and model in one software environment
Subsurface mapping completing the full crop of all geological units Bases and tops of all geological objects are triangulated the geological framework model is complete
Applied projects and outputs
What does the customer want?. Answers! Water Industry and Environment Agency Geological cross-sections with hydrostratigraphical attribution, hydrogeological domains maps, grid export of thicknesses, tops and bases of aquifers and aquitards for groundwater flow modelling. Town Planners, Civil Engineers and Insurance Industry Maps of unstable, man made or undermined ground, subsurface maps for planning excavations, site specific geological information, sections along roads and tunnels, property models. Minerals Industry Isopachytes of resources and overburden, volume predictions, predictive boreholes, cut away functions for quarry design. The Public and Academia Standard geological maps, home buyers reports, uncovered geological maps, fence diagrams, exploded views, 3D geological animations.

Some conclusions Many customers are overwhelmed even with 2D geological maps. Traditionally maps had to be re-interpreted in order to answer a specific request. The current requirements of customers from a 3D geological map are hugely varied. They range from paper output, GIS export to video clips and gridded files for groundwater flow modelling. Additionally, new uses of a geological subsurface model may arise, as customers begin to understand and explore the potential of our new n product. All these points have created the potential for large inefficiency ency in delivering results from geological models to customers. A new unified delivery system had to be found
Live demonstration of model delivery The SUBSURFACE VIEWER Key features: JAVA based platform independent customer licenses software once per model, for unlimited seats and use equals printing costs delivers full richness of geological model user can export sections, maps and contours to traditional formats. (raster maps and GIS files and contours potential for web-enabling enabling exits even non-boffins and communicates our science
And in case it didn t work some spinning videos.
