Driven by curiosity about the forgotten realms including the deep biosphere, the deep ocean, and the poles. Overall aim is to address important questions related to how we use and impact Earth s resources. 8 Climate impacts & atmospheric circulation Justin Wettstein: (Burt 110) Climate change, once considered an issue for a distant future, has moved firmly into the present. Corn producers in Iowa, oyster growers in Washington State, and maple syrup producers in Vermont are all observing climate related changes that are outside of recent experience. [National Climate Assessment, 2014] (some) research opportunities: 1) Identify observed extreme events in a particular system (or systems) with important climate impacts 2) Catalog atmospheric circulation patterns when impacts occur 3) Characterize the frequency and / or intensity of the same patterns in future climate model output National Weather Service (wikipedia) Many climate impacts are tied to particularly extreme events in the intensity and / or duration of temperature and / or precipitation change, but the link between these extreme events and changes in the atmospheric circulation are often nebulous.
