The History Behind the Fayette County GIS User Group The GIS User Group came about from: A need to open lines of communication Coordinate the exchange of digital data Link the five agencies who use County data.
The History Behind the Fayette County GIS User Group A master list of potential members was created based on decision making capability and known GIS users. These potential members were contacted and invited to an information-gathering session. In some instances, the decision-maker deferred to a subordinate within the department.
The History Behind the Fayette County GIS User Group Initially, we met for lunch to gauge interest in a user group. We used that meeting as a catalyst for creating our user group and to identify specific areas of need.

Why Create a County-Wide User Group? Data Sharing
Data Sharing Standing Data Sharing Agreement: Fayette County provides GIS data to cities ( licensees ) within the County
Data Sharing Standing Data Sharing Agreement: Fayette County provides GIS data to cities ( licensees ) within the County Licensees may not sell, license, or distribute data to a third party Data is distributed in an annual digest
Issues with data sharing: Data Sharing
Data Sharing Issues with data sharing: Conventional practice was unidirectional, from the County to the other agencies
Data Sharing Issues with data sharing: Conventional practice was unidirectional, from the County to the other agencies There was no protocol in place for submitting changes or correcting errors
Data Sharing Issues with data sharing: Conventional practice was unidirectional, from the County to the other agencies There was no protocol in place for submitting changes or correcting errors Limited contact, if any, between agencies
Why Create a County-Wide User Group? Data Sharing Data Standards
Setting Data Standards Up to this point, each agency created and used data without any regulated standards When sharing data was necessary, the data would have to be modified in order to fit into another agency s database
Why Create a County-Wide User Group? Data Sharing Data Standards Data Correction
Data Correction When an error was found, who was responsible for correcting it? When an error was corrected, how was the updated data to be disseminated?
Initial Projects Established Addressing standards Established Road Centerline standards
Current Projects Establishing parcel data standards Ongoing communication among agencies Encouraging professional growth
Ongoing / Future Projects Create an FTP Site Establish data correction standards Possible sale of data
Accomplishments Achieved Through Interagency Cooperation As a group, we: Established basic guidelines for shared data Created keys to simplify data integration Created a system for correcting errors
Benefits of Interagency Cooperation Create contact between agencies Establish communication between GIS practitioners Enable flow of data among all agencies
Benefits of Interagency Cooperation Encourages professional growth through: Guest Speakers Networking Mentoring / Encouragement
