2 The name of our department has changed in August In Turkey The Council of Higher Education (YÖK) is the official authority assigning the names of departments. The XXIV FIG-2010,Sydney ipbüker_geomatics 3/10 Administrative History The Royal School of Naval Engineering The Royal School of Military Engineering Engineering Academy İstanbul Technical (1946) ITU Civil Engineering Faculty Topography&Geodesy Division (1947) Geodesy&Photogrammetry Eng. 3 Geomatics a new Paradigm Geomatics comes from the French word géomatique. Its roots are geo (Earth) and informatics (information + automation + ics which is the accepted form for the name of sciences). Another description of Geomatics was derived from two words Geodesy+Geoinformatic. In the Latin language, the Geomatics correspond to Geomatica. The Geomatics was defined in the Oxford Dictionary as; Geomatics: The mathematics of the earth; the science of the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data, especially instrumental data, relating to the earth's surface. It was Laval Surveying Department (Canada), in 1986, developed the first academic program in GEOMATICS in the world in replacement of its Surveying program, the names of the Department and the Faculty. So, Michel Paradis is the father of this modern geomatics paradigm. The XXIV FIG-2010,Sydney ipbüker_geomatics 5/10 Geomatics is a Result of milleniums old professional and scientific expertise Geometry B.C Geomatics Compass J.M.Kepler Louis J.M.Daguerre Explorer VI Surveying ; ~5000 years old profession The XXIV FIG-2010,Sydney ipbüker_geomatics 6/10 Sydney, Australia, April

4 Geomatics is a Result of Changing Contexts of Science and Technology 1900 Type of knowledge Organizational form Dominant values Changing Modes of Knowledge Making in the Last Age 1940s s Little Science Big Science Technoscience Mode-1 Mode-1 1/2 Mode-2 disciplinary multidisciplinary transdisciplinary research groups institutions ad hoc projects academic bureaucratic entrepreneurial Andrew Jamison Aalborg 2010 Mathematics Physics Geodesy Cartography Photogrammetry Remote Sensing Geography... Transition mode The XXIV FIG-2010,Sydney ipbüker_geomatics 7/10 GIS Geomatics is a transdisciplinary mixture of all surveying&mapping related sciences. The XXIV FIG-2010,Sydney ipbüker_geomatics 8/10 Sydney, Australia, April

5 We consider the term Geomatics; Professional Evolution as an accumulated professional knowledge and expertise parallel to the history of science and civilization. as an evolution in the knowledge making modes from individual scientific disciplines to technoscience. as a transdisciplinary mixture of all the surveying and mapping related doctrines. This is the reason why we have changed the name of our department.
