1 HCU HafenCity University Hamburg Geomatics at HafenCity University Hamburg Course information The broad spectrum that geomatics covers Geomatics is concerned with spatially orientated data, simply expressed with the where questions in everyday life. We encounter these all the time for example, geomatics provides the basis for navigation systems and route planners on mobile phones, the internet or in cars, the basis for Google Earth and virtual 3D city models, safety via current and highly accurate nautical charts, secured property ownership via property assessment, environmental monitoring from satellite and aerial images, safety through precision measurement of the Airbus A380, and much more. Geomatics is an exciting interdisciplinary field, which covers a broad range from applications in geodetic engineering to land use planning, land management and environmental sciences and uses state-of-the-art technologies to accomplish this. The Geomatics course at HCU offers a solid foundation in computer, natural and engineering science, but also promotes networked thinking and interdisciplinary team working ability in order to answer questions relevant to planning, land use policy and current environmental issues in cooperation with other disciplines. The large number of application possibilities results in a broad spectrum of sought-after and assured professions for geomatics engineers.. HafenCity University Hamburg HafenCity University Hamburg - University of the Built Environment and Metropolitan Development (HCU) was founded in 2006 by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. It is the only university in Europe that is focused exclusively on construction and urban development.. With its emphasis on disciplinarity, interprofessionality and transdisciplinarity, HCU is in a position to facilitate understanding of the pressing problems of the built environment and the development of metropolitan areas in their diversity, as well as to demonstrate ways to overcome them. As a university, HCU combines the three academic areas of engineering and natural sciences, humanities and social sciences and concept and design. HCU offers courses in Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geomatics, Metropolitan Culture, Resource Efficiency in Architecture and Planning (REAP), Urban Planning and Urban Design. HCU employs one of the most innovative university concepts in Europe. The foundations of each student s knowledge form an excellent basis for the chosen subject (discipline). Relying on this basis, interdisciplinary modules and project work were developed for all courses in order to promote interprofessionality. The introduction of a mandatory Studium Fundamentale serves the promotion of transdisciplinarity. In order to realize these specific targets in teaching and research, professorships, institutes and departments were abolished for the foundation of a bachelor, master and research school. 2 Bachelor s and master s programmes in Geomatics. Practical, project-oriented and international. Bachelor s and master s programmes HCU offers the study of Geomatics in courses which complement each other. The bachelor s course in Geomatics covers six semesters and results in a Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.) degree. The bachelor s degree opens the door to a vocational entry into the professional world. However, you can also choose to continue and supplement your studies by applying for the four-semester master s course, which results in the Master of Science (M. Sc.) degree. You can also opt for the master s course after several years of work life. The international system of bachelor s and master s courses makes it possible to transfer from one university to another within Germany or abroad. This includes HCU s foreign partner universities. You can obtain information from the International Office Averhoffstraße 38 D Hamburg Tel: +49 (0) / The bachelor s and master s concept in Geomatics The study of geomatics is characterised by its link of mathematical and natural science subjects with engineering sciences. The proximity to related geoscientific courses is essential. The training is practical and project-oriented. After a six-semester bachelor s course, the knowledge and ability gained can be built upon in several different specialisations that are as part of the four-semester master s course. This can mean more in-depth study into the technical aspects of geodetic measurement technology, geoinformation technology or hydrography. The specialisation in hydrography features another distinctive feature, unique in Germany: the programme has been internationally certified in the A category (the highest level) of the FIG/IHO/ICA-Standards of Competence of Hydrographic Surveyors. Combination with the other construction and planning-orientated disciplines of the HafenCity University (i.e. Architecture, Civil Engineering and Urban Planning) offers the chance for stronger interdisciplinary integration. For example, this concerns the processes of planning, implementation and visualisation of developments and the registration and modernisation of buildings. This integration gives rise to new issues which are incorporated in the broader composition of teaching and research. We have international contacts with numerous universities, e.g. in Brest, Dublin, Gävle, Madrid, Moscow or Trondheim. Our courses have received accreditation from the german Accreditation Board ASIIN, providing an independent seal of quality in study and teaching.

3 Of information and space... The bachelor s course in Geomatics at HafenCity University. Bachelor s course in Geomatics Since the Winter Semester 2003/2004, HafenCity University Hamburg has offered the German language bachelor s course in Geomatics, which lasts for three years six semesters and leads to in a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree. Basic subjects taught in the first and second semesters are Practical Geodesy, Mathematics and Physics, Computer Science, Software Development, Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Evaluation Technology and Special Calculation Methods. Compulsory subjects of the main programme include Applied Mathematics and Adjustment Methods, Practical Geodesy, Satellite Geodesy, Geo-informatics, Photogrammetry and Cartography, Land Survey Registry and Property Law, Valuation and Land Division and Rural Planning. Various study modules are also offered in the main programme. A pre-practice of 13 weeks is mandatory for students who have neither a professional technical college qualification nor training in surveying. This prior placement should be concluded before beginning the bachelor s course, but must be proven by the start of the bachelor s thesis at the latest. The bachelor s thesis, scheduled for the sixth semester, is supervised by university-professors, but can also be accomplished outside the university. The modules of the bachelor s course in Geomatics 1st year: The first course year comprises modules on:» Basics of mathematics, stochastics and adjustment methods» Basics of physics» Basics of computer science» Basics of geodesy with topics such as position and height determination and data processing. 2nd year: The second course year includes the modules» Adjustment methods and approximation» Photogrammetry» Geoinformatics with geographic information systems (GIS), geovisualisation and geodata processing» Land management» Legal issues with land survey register, surveying and cadastre law» Business economics and technical English» Geodesy and contains complexes such as mapping, alignment and surveying, satellite geodesy, geodetic networks and property surveying. 3rd year: The third course year offers the compulsory module» Geodesy with topics from sensor technology, systems engineering and hydrography. One of the following optional modules is also selected:» Construction operation» Aerial and engineering photogrammetry» Remote sensing» Land management» Engineering geodesy» GIS» Marine geodesy In addition to these, in the first, third and fifth semester are the activities of the Q-studies or Studium Fundamentale, in which educational knowledge from art and social and natural sciences is taught in a transdisciplinary way.

4 The digital world in 3D and 4D...surveying the seas. The master s course in Geomatics at HafenCity University. The master s course in Geomatics The master s course in Geomatics follows on from the bachelor s course of the same name and provides an in-depth study of the scientific aspects of geomatics. This can include a concentration in the areas of geodetic measurement technology, geoinformation technology or hydrography. The teaching language depends on concentration predominantly German (in the first two concentrations) or exclusively English (hydrography). The course is scheduled to last two years and results after completing a master s thesis and a final examination in the last semester in a Master of Science (MSc) degree. The geodetic measurement technology specialisation is concerned with the gathering and evaluation of spatially orientated data and is tailored to the most recent developments. The evaluation of survey data can be of considerable complexity and demands excellent knowledge of the basic natural science principles in physics, geodesy, mathematics and data processing. If spatial geodata are collected from moving platforms, they provide a methodological connection to navigation precision navigation in particular in the air (aeroplane), on land (measuring vehicle) or at sea (ship). Concentration in geodetic measurement technology includes modules in advanced geodesy, industrial surveying technology, terrestrial laser scanning, close-range photogrammetry, integrated navigation,location-based services, statistical estimation methods, modelling and visualisation. The management, analysis and visualisation of spatially oriented data lie at the heart of the concentration in geoinformation technology. The information collected is saved in databases and processed further with geoinformation systems or special software. In addition, spatially dynamic/kinematic processes can be evaluated by time mapping of the data. The database can be interpreted using modern computer technology through 3D or 4D visualisation. Alongside a comprehensive project in GIS project management, there are modules in web-based GIS, geoinformatics, basic technologies of geoinformatics (e.g. digital image processing, remote sensing), location-based services, statistical estimation methods, modelling and visualisation. A distinctive feature of HafenCity University Hamburg which makes it unique in Germany is the specialisation in hydrography, which is concerned with the surveying, logging and illustration of the sea bed and its characteristic properties and dynamics. One of the highest priorities of hydrography is securing modern marine navigation and the preparation of basic information for all structural engineering measures in the maritime field. Modern technology is employed here to survey the waters. The survey data are administered, analysed and visualised in digital hydrographical information systems. The modules in hydrography cover areas including hydrography, advanced geodesy, navigation, geographical information systems in hydrography, marine geology and geophysics, oceanography, tide, maritime environment, data processing and software technology. The programme has been internationally certified in the A category (the highest level) of the FIG/IHO/ICA- Standards of Competence of Hydrographic Surveyors. In the second and third semesters, all concentrations include activities of the Q-studies or Studium Fundamentale, in which educational knowledge from art and social and natural sciences is taught in a transdisciplinary way.

5 Shaping the future. Geomatics at HafenCity University practical and international training closely related to application-oriented research Fields of work Graduates of Geomatics open up fascinating areas of work and excellent vocational development opportunities. Engineering companies, project planning companies, businesses and agencies in the environmental field, public administration and research institutions all await the urgently required flow of new professionals. Geomatics engineers facilitate factually based decisions on current and future-oriented public services and on careful and sustainable handling of human living space. This involves increased consideration of data and information collected, assessed and presented by means of modern recording, analysis and communication methods with particular view of quality results. Practical study/research-based learning Teaching and research at HafenCity University takes place in close collaboration with sources of practical application, and range from engineering companies through public institutions such as the Landesbetrieb Geoinformation und Vermessung (State Office for Geoinformation and Surveying) or Hamburg Port Authority to corporations like Airbus and Daimler. The projects comprise the introduction and evaluation of new measurement systems for companies, control surveys of buildings or the development of new software and hardware for measurment, evaluation and interpretation. Geomatics engineers work in geodetic surveying, geoinformatics, engineering geodesy, land management, land registry and property mapping, property assessment and land consolidation, photogrammetry and remote sensing, and hydrography. They work in federal, state and local authorities, independently and in engineering companies, in industry and construction and in special research institutions. Professional fields for hydrographers include public and private hydrographical services, such as harbour and project surveying and surveying of maritime mining, pipelines, dredging and offshore construction. Other fields of work can be identified with the following keywords: sensor technology, three-dimensional positioning and special navigation, GIS, electronic marine charting, maritime environmental technology and marine engineering. Tasks in marine geodesy and oceanography, as well as seismic, magnetic and gravimetric exploration, are closely linked to state-of-the-art research and developmen.
