2 Introduction The ICA subscribes to the 1958 declaration of the 8th General Assembly of the International Council for Science (ICSU) concerning non-discrimination on the basis of politics, nationality, religion, race or gender. Values The International Cartographic Association (ICA) respects: the freedom and universality of science, the equality of individuals and cultures, and appreciates creativity and critical thinking. ICA seeks the highest quality in theory, technology, standards guidelines and research. ICA recognises its responsibilities to lead and develop the disciplines of Cartography and GIScience for the benefit of society and humankind. 2

3 vision to ensure that Cartography and GIScience are employed to maximum effect and full potential for the benefit of society and science through promotion and representation of the disciplines and professions of Cartography and GIScience internationally. Mission to promote the disciplines and professions of Cartography and GIScience in an international context. 3

4 Aims (1) 1. Advancing the study of cartographic or geographic information (GI) science issues; 2. Initiating, fostering & co-ordinating research in cartography and GI science; 3. Organising international and regional conferences, meetings, exhibitions and outreach programmes, etc, and participation in similar meetings facilitated by other organisations. Aims (2) 4. Establishing commissions and working groups to work on issues of particular interest to cartography and GI science. 5. Promoting and ensuring equity in all matters and at all levels of responsibility within the Association and amongst its members. 4

5 Definitions Cartography is the discipline dealing with the art, science and technology of making and using maps. Geographic Information Science (GIScience) refers to the scientific context of spatial information processing and management, including associated technology as well as commercial, social and environmental implications. Information processing and management include data analysis and transformations, data management and information visualisation. ICA Objectives related to UN-GGIM Targets for accomplishing the vision are: to contribute to the understanding and solution of world problems through the use of Cartography and GI science in decision-making processes. to foster the national and international use of geospatially referenced environmental, economic and social information. to encourage introduction of a focused geospatial basis for national and international statistical information. 5

6 ICA Objectives (2) to provide global fora for discussion of Cartography and GI science. to participate in meetings, dissemination and publication in concert with sister societies and international organizations including the UN, sharing its vision with these organisations. to facilitate the transfer of new Cartographic and GI knowledge between and within nations, especially to developing nations, and to undertake Capacity Building, notably for communities in need. ICA Objectives (3) to perform or to promote multi-national Cartographic and GI research, including collaborative and trans-disciplinary research, in order to solve scientific and applied problems. to maintain a contemporary Research Agenda which is recognized as a leading and authoritative document addressing humankind. to enhance education in Cartography and GI science in the broadest sense through publications, seminars, conferences, competitions and exhibitions. 6
