Agenda Background Objective Geospatial Technology Data Considerations Methodology Results Conclusion 2

Background In the early 1980 s there was a proposal to build a high speed rail line that spans between Calgary and Edmonton It wasn t until the 2000 s that third party support increased for development of such a line By the mid 2000 s there were several companies who had submitted route selections for a high speed rail line The following presentation describe the process undertaken in order to develop a high speed rail line between Calgary and Edmonton with an intermediate stop in Red Deer 3

Objective Generation of Start, intermediate and stop locations based on suitability Develop Thematic Cost Map (Reclassify and Weighting) Develop flexible tool Create Cost Rasters Least cost path analysis Determine the route between Calgary(Source) Red Deer(Intermediate) Edmonton (Destination) considering various factors 4

Geospatial Technology Data Capture Data Collected from The City of Calgary, Red Deer, Edmonton Open Data Catalogue Data Management File Geodatabase Data Modeling ArcGIS Model Builder Tool, Python Script Data Analysis Maps were analyzed using ArcGIS analysis tool Data Output Map showing Railway route Calgary Red Deer - Edmonton 5

Data Considerations Calgary/Edmonton Eight selection factors were used for analysis: Geology Hydrology Highway Land Use and Land Cover Railway Sensitive Area Reservation Area Elevation Red Deer Six selection factors were used for analysis: Geology Hydrology Highway Land Use and Land Cover Railway Elevation 6

Methodology: Models Data organized into Geodatabase GIS analysis and classification Two raster maps Suitability and Reclassification Using suitability and Cost maps generated Integration of data extracted from these two maps Using least cost path algorithm optimal route was generated 7

Methodology : Main Model and Sub-Model 8

Methodology : Combined Model Feature to Raster conversion 1 Suitable Source point (Calgary) Reclassification Route from Calgary to Edmonton 3 Cost Raster 2 Suitable Intermediate point (Red Deer) Route from Red Deer to Edmonton Suitable Destination point (Edmonton)

Result : Route Profile 19

Result : Optimal Route and Validation Optimal Route Route Avoiding Reservation Area Route Avoiding Main Highway 20

Conclusion After performing a series of analysis on the data that includes the cities of Calgary, Red Deer, and Edmonton, shortest and least cost route was developed This route has a length of 296 kilometres, which is shorter than the current vehicle route between Calgary, Red Deer, and Edmonton of 300 kilometres. The route has the ability to be expanded in the future in order to include other stop locations along the route The tool can be used in order to perform other routing selections like pipeline and road resulting in tool transferability 21
