Part 3a: Determination of a Chemical Name Given Its Formula (Part 3a: 1-25) These are the same formulas used in Part 2a. Make sure you name the compounds using the naming system consistent with the substance type already predetermined. The naming systems for each compound type are given below: 1. Acids containing a halide (F 1-, Cl 1-, Br 1-, I 1- ) Hydro + Halide name + "ic" ending Ex: HCl = hydrochloric acid 2. Acids containing an oxoanion with an "ate" or "ite" ending for "ite" ending: Oxoanion name + "ous" ending for "ate" ending: Oxoanion name + "ic" ending 3. Molecular compounds prefix + leftside element _prefix + rightside element + "ide" ending Note: prefix is equal to lower right subscript value associated with the element in the formula 4. Make sure you construct the formula using the system consistent with the substance type already predetermined. The formula system for each compound type are given below: 1. Acids containing a halide, X 1- (name = hydro+ic) formula = H 1 X 1 2. Acids containing an oxoanion, (XO y ) z- formula = H z XO y Note: # hydrogens in formula = charge on oxoanion 3. Molecular formula = (leftside element) prefix _ (rightside element) prefix Note: prefix located before element in name and after element in formula 4. Ionic
